A few Thursdays ago was a wrap. For my brief acting career, that is. One of the benefits of having a writer’s schedule in a city like Paris is the ability to say yes to the random opportunities that pop up. When an announcement flashed across a WhatsApp group that a Hollywood comedy-thriller was looking for extras (群演), I thought why not — and sent in a few headshots.
I had little idea of exactly what to expect. Being an extra often involves a lot of waiting and a movie set is a phone-free space. In our case, when we weren’t actively involved in scenes, but still on set without our phones, what else was there to do but… talk to each other? There was an intense awareness of many meetings of many eyes. It was gloriously old school. A glimpse into what life must have been like before everyone’s head was leaning forward and staring at the screen while people wait for whoever they’re waiting for.
Among the people I met were an art student from Quebec, an early career Parisian actor and a Franco-Dutch programme coordinator. We chatted, we read, we played charades, we gossiped. In between takes, personalities seemed to pop out of the surprisingly heavy hitting cast, as well as from fellow extras. During one scene, the programme coordinator and I were wandering around in the background, having a conversation. As the scene was shot, and reshot, and shot again, it couldn’t help but result in a quick friendship.
It struck me that around the time I graduated from college, technology seemed to stop bringing us together. Instead, social media grabbed and then destroyed our attention spans. The process of bringing the world to life on screen brought us to life in a way that we normally ignore. There’s an irony (讽刺) here — playing roles in a faked representation of the world brought us, for a time, back to what is most real. And whether I make it into the final cuts or not, for that alone, the early morning wake-ups and the sometimes endless waiting were far more than worth it.
4. What do we know about the author?
A. He is into shooting headshots.
B. He played a major role in a movie.
C. He has a tight schedule as a writer.
D. He seized the chance to be an extra.
5. What did the author see while waiting on set?
A. An old-fashioned school. B. In-person communication.
C. Intense competition. D. Smartphone addicts.
6. What does the author think of the experience as an extra?
A. Time-consuming. B. Stress-relieving. C. Rewarding. D. Frustrating.
7. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Locked phones, unlocked connection.
B. Faked performances, genuine emotion.
C. The struggles and joys of being an extra.
D. A glimpse into Hollywood’s film-making.
D 5. B 6. C 7. A

根据第一段“When an announcement flashed across a WhatsApp group that a Hollywood comedy-thriller was looking for extras (群演), I thought why not — and sent in a few headshots.(当WhatsApp群组中突然传出一则消息,一部好莱坞喜剧惊悚片正在寻找群演时,我想为什么不呢,并寄了几张头像)”可知,当看到群里好莱坞喜剧惊悚片招群演的消息时,作者觉得可以试试并发送了几张头像照片,也就是抓住了这个当群演的机会。
根据第二段“Being an extra often involves a lot of waiting and a movie set is a phone-free space. In our case, when we weren’t actively involved in scenes, but still on set without our phones, what else was there to do but… talk to each other?(作为一名群演需要等待很长时间,而电影片场是一个没有电话的空间。在我们的情况下,当我们没有积极参与场景,但仍然没有手机在片场时,除了……彼此交谈,还能做什么?)”可知,在片场等待且不能用手机时,大家只能互相交谈,也就是作者看到了人与人之间面对面的交流。故选B。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“And whether I make it into the final cuts or not, for that alone, the early morning wake-ups and the sometimes endless waiting were far more than worth it.(无论我是否进入最终剪辑,仅凭这一点,清晨的醒来和有时无休止的等待都远远值得)”可知,不管自己是否能出现在最终剪辑中,仅因为当群演带来的收获,早起和无尽的等待都是非常值得的,由此可推断作者认为当群演的经历是有回报的。
故选A。

While we race into a future where we outsource (外包) most of our problem-solving to artificial intelligence, the greatest threat is not super intelligent machinery. It’s mindlessly putting too much trust in Big Tech and not enough trust in the power of our own minds.
A philosophy of artful thinking is a good way to avoid this. To think artfully means to solve problems using not just our brains, but also our hands, eyes, and ears, along with our emotions. This approach employs the cognitive (认知的) resources that are spread throughout our bodies but-often go unused.
Changing how we think is hard work. And it starts with a mindfulness practice. Accessing artful intelligence requires being mindful of how we think with our body, how we use our limbs (四肢), organs, and emotions to make sense of the world. Be mindful of all the different messages your body is sending you as well as the different roles and functions your bodily actions can play. For example, gesturing in conversations is not just communicative. These movements often help the speaker to sort out their thought process and assist in getting the words out.
Today, Big Tech is pushing a message of artificial-intelligence craziness and fear. What makes you stuck in it? It’s seeing the same things wherever you look. Big Tech gives you screens, hoping that your attention will always be attracted by their devices. If you want to find more freedom in this AI-filled world, improve your ability to mindfully shift your attention between different objects or levels of focus. Remember everything is born of a choice.
Artful thinking demands effortful mindfulness to ensure that what we do, what we hope to achieveby using these technological tools, will not weaken our humanity. As Thich Nhat Hanh said, “Mindful living is an art, and each of us has to train to be an artist.”
8. What can we learn about artful thinking?
A. It simplifies problem-solving. B. It focuses on developing our brains.
C. It prevents us from over-relying on AI. D. It helps promote high-tech machinery.
9. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Benefits of artful intelligence. B. The approach to artful thinking.
C. Significance of being mindful. D. The challenges of mindfulness practice.
10. What does the author suggest we do in the AI-filled world?
A. Enhance the flexibility of attention. B. Adapt to the rise of AI.
C. Avoid the interruptions from Big Tech. D. Improve the levels of focus.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Artful thinking advances big tech.
B. Too much trust in AI harms our minds.
C. Physical actions better cognitive functions.
D. Mindfulness keeps us human in the age of AI.
C 9. B 10. A 11. D
根据文章第一段“It’s mindlessly putting too much trust in Big Tech and not enough trust in the power of our own minds.(这是一种盲目过度信任大型科技企业,却严重低估自身思维力量的行为。)”以及第二段“A philosophy of artful thinking is a good way to avoid this. To think artfully means to solve problems using not just our brains, but also our hands, eyes, and ears, along with our emotions.(“巧妙思考”的哲学是避免这一陷阱的好方法。所谓巧妙思考,就是不仅用大脑,还用双手、双眼、双脚以及情感来解决问题。)”可知,巧妙思考能帮助人们避免过度依赖人工智能。
【9题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段“Accessing artful intelligence requires being mindful of how we think with our body, how we use our limbs (四肢), organs, and emotions to make sense of the world. Be mindful of all the different messages your body is sending you as well as the different roles and functions your bodily actions can play.(要获得艺术化的智能,需要留意我们如何用身体思考——我们如何运用四肢、器官和情绪来理解世界。请留心你的身体向你传递的所有不同信号,以及你的身体动作所能扮演的不同角色和发挥的不同功能。)”可知,第三段主要讲的是艺术性思维的方法。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第四段“If you want to find more freedom in this AI-filled world, improve your ability to mindfully shift your attention between different objects or levels of focus.(倘若你想在人工智能无处不在的世界里拥有更多自由,就要有意识地锻炼自己,在不同事物、不同专注层次之间灵活切换注意力。)”
根据文章最后一段“Artful thinking demands effortful mindfulness to ensure that what we do, what we hope to achieveby using these technological tools, will not weaken our humanity.(巧妙思考需要付出努力的正念,以确保我们使用这些技术工具所做的事、所希望达成的目标,不会削弱我们的人性。)” D“Mindfulness keeps us human in the age of AI.(在AI时代,专注让我们保持人性。)”
D
The places inhabited by many species are shifting due to climate change, and these species are mostly tracked by formal monitoring plans and surveys. However, these traditional methods may struggle to spot rapid changes, and sometimes overlook urban areas.
A new study led by the University of Exeter examined posts about Jersey tiger moths on main social media. The posts reveal that the moths are unexpectedly common in towns and cities. The findings demonstrate how social media can help scientists track animal species as they relocate in response to climate change.
“Wildlife surveys tend to be done in rural areas, so their information doesn’t always reflect the vital importance of towns and cities,” said Nile Stephenson, who led the study.
Urban parks and gardens provide diverse habitats where species like the Jersey tiger moth can grow well. By accounting for biases (偏差) and gaps in the data, researchers have developed a method that could be widely used to track many species — especially those that share urban environments.
“Our study shows that plenty of people in towns and cities are interested in wildlife, which has the potential to increase connectedness to nature,” said Stephenson, now at the University of Cambridge. “We also found some people who are very interested in wildlife and photography tend to post images of a wide range of wildlife they see. This provides a database that scientists can use.”
Stephenson said the public can also help by posting in places such as iNaturalist and iRecord, as information from these is already used in research. The team highlighted limitations of using social media, saying it can only be used to complement — not replace — traditional monitoring.
“Because social media is so subject to trends, we would expect to see bias, such as more sightings of species that are being widely talked about,” said Stephenson. “However, we can turn that into a positive. For example, we could improve monitoring of invasive (入侵的) species by making trends around recording sightings.”
12. What can be learned about traditional animal species monitoring?
A. It has some limitations. B. It isn’t backed by science.
C. It is only used in rural areas. D. It proves complicated to carry out.
13. What does the study find?
A. Most online animal images are unreliable.
B. Urban environments are unsuitable for animals.
C. Wildlife appeals to many people in urban areas.
D. Diverse habitats in the wild are under protection.
14. What does Stephenson stress in the last paragraph?
A. It’s tough to monitor invasive species. B. Social media should be properly used.
C. Traditional monitoring is irreplaceable. D. He is opposed to employing social media.
15. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Traditional wildlife monitoring has fallen out of date.
B. The impact of climate change on wildlife is enormous.
C. Urban areas play a crucial role in wildlife conservation.
D. Social media can help track species as climate changes.
A 13. C 14. B 15. D
根据第一段的“The places inhabited by many species are shifting due to climate change, and these species are mostly tracked by formal monitoring plans and surveys. However, these traditional methods may struggle to spot rapid changes, and sometimes overlook urban areas.(由于气候变化,许多物种的栖息地正在发生变化,这些物种主要通过正式的监测计划和调查来追踪。然而,这些传统方法可能难以发现快速变化,有时还会忽略城市地区)”可知,传统监测方法存在难以发现快速变化以及会忽略城市地区等局限性。所以关于传统动物物种监测,可以了解到它存在一些局限性。故选A。
根据第五段的““Our study shows that plenty of people in towns and cities are interested in wildlife, which has the potential to increase connectedness to nature,” said Stephenson, now at the University of Cambridge.(现在在剑桥大学的斯蒂芬森说:“我们的研究表明,城镇中有许多人对野生动物感兴趣,这有可能增加与自然的联系。”)”
根据最后一段斯蒂芬森说的““Because social media is so subject to trends, we would expect to see bias, such as more sightings of species that are being widely talked about,”said Stephenson. “However, we can turn that into a positive. For example, we could improve monitoring of invasive (入侵的) species by making trends around recording sightings.”(斯蒂芬森说:“由于社交媒体非常容易受到潮流的影响,我们预计会看到偏见,比如更多地看到被广泛讨论的物种。

I started working out with my personal trainer, Teresa. Months later, my weight didn’t reduce. I wasn’t feeling very motivated.
“Let’s start with something different today,” Teresa said. I thought she was going to show me a new exercise. Instead, she took something small and green out of her pocket. A rubber band (橡皮筋). Teresa took my right arm and pulled the band onto my wrist, a determined look on her face. “This will solve your problem,” she assured me. “Your weight is not your biggest problem,” Teresa said. “What’s really holding you back is you’re always putting yourself down.”
I had grown up constantly comparing myself to others, and I fell short every time. The other kids at my high school were brighter, more interesting and definitely better looking. I explained all that to Teresa while I warmed up on the treadmill. “I know I don’t have a lot of confidence,” I admitted. “But put myself down? No! I’m just being honest with myself.”
Teresa didn’t see it that way.” Your negative thinking is a bad habit, and it’s time to break it,” she declared.
The plan was simple. Every time I thought or said something that put me down, I was supposed to pull the rubber band hard and let myself out of that mindset. “Pay attention to how many times you have a negative thought about yourself,” Teresa said as we moved on to the leg press machine. “I think you’ll be surprised at how often you do it.”
Could she be right? I knew Teresa really wanted to help me, so even though I thought her plan was kind of silly, I agreed to try Operation Rubber Band. I left the gym and drove home with the green band around my wrist.
A pile of mail was waiting. There was an official-looking letter from my bank. This can’t be good, I thought. I tore open the envelope. One of my checks had been returned because I’d been late transferring money to the account. My cheeks burned when I saw it was the birthday check I had sent to my niece. You really messed up now! How could you be so stupid?
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
I couldn’t stop feeling bad about myself when I saw the returned check.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Seven days later, I went to the gym for my appointment with my trainer.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
I couldn’t stop feeling bad about myself when I saw the returned check. Teresa’s words stayed in my head, and I felt a little pain on my wrist from the green rubber band. It was like a real reminder. Even though I wasn’t sure, I pulled the band, wanting to stop thinking badly about myself. I decided it was time to deal with the bigger problems that were holding me back. It wasn’t just about fixing a money mistake; it was about changing how I saw and talked about myself. Every time I had a negative thought, I pulled that band — kind of hurt, but I was determined to give it a try. As time passed, I noticed something changing.
Seven days later, I went to the gym for my appointment with my trainer. As I stepped onto the treadmill, I realized something was different. Teresa spotted the band and smiled, asking how it’d been going. I shared my experiences, surprised to admit that pulling the band actually helped. During our workout, Teresa introduced a new routine, pushing me to try exercises I never thought I could do. As the session progressed, I found myself acknowledging accomplishments rather than dwelling on shortcomings. The green band, once a mere accessory, now symbolized a journey toward self-acceptance.
