Water Trick!
Can you turn a glass of water upside down without spilling (洒出) the water?
★What you need:
a drinking glass, water, a sink, an old greeting card or a piece of thick paper that is long and wide enough to cover the whole rim (边缘) of the glass.
★What to do
①Fill the drinking glass with water.
②Put the old greeting card over the glass.
Make sure the card covers the whole rim of the glass closely. This is the key to the success of the experiment.
③Stand by the sink. Press your hand hard over the card and then quickly turn the glass upside down.
④Slowly take your hand away from the card. What happens?
★Why:
The card stays in place because the air pressure pushing up on it balances the force of gravity (重力) pulling the water down.
1. Which step is the most important to make the experiment work?
A. Step② B. Step③ C. Step④
2. The experiment works because the air pressure _________ the force of gravity.
A. is stronger than (>) B. is weaker than (<) C. works against equally (=)

During the Song Dynasty, there was a famous official named Zhang Guaiya. He worked in Chongyang County. One day, he was walking around the county office when he saw a guard leaving in a hurry. The guard was hiding something under his arm.
Zhang Guaiya stopped the guard and asked, “What are you hiding?” The guard was very nervous. He slowly took out a small coin from under his arm. Zhang Guaiya asked, “Where did you get this coin?” The guard lowered his head and said, “I took it from the county’s money box.”
Zhang Guaiya was very angry. He ordered his men to beat the guard as punishment. But the guard did not think he did anything wrong. “It’s just one small coin!” he cried. “Why beat me for such a little thing? You can beat me to death, and I still won’t accept this punishment!”
Zhang Guaiya became even angrier. He took his brush and wrote a sentence on a piece of paper. He said, “One coin a day, a thousand coins in a thousand days. Constant dripping water wears through stone.” Then he ordered the guard to be killed.
Zhang Guaiya meant that a small mistake, if repeated again and again, can lead to a big problem. Taking one small coin might not seem like a big crime (罪行) . But if a person keeps stealing little by little, one day he will become a great thief. The guard did not see his own mistake, which made it even more dangerous.
This story gives us the idiom “dripping water wears through stone.” It teaches us that with persistence, even small efforts can achieve great results. But it also warns us that small bad habits can lead to serious consequences.
4. What did the guard take from the county office?
A. A brush and a piece of paper.
B. One small coin from the money box.
C. A bag of coins.
5. What does the word “it” in paragraph 5 refer to?
A. The guard’s death
B. The sentence Zhang Guaiya wrote
C. The crime of taking one small coin
6. What can we infer about the guard’s attitude towards his action?
A. He thought taking one small coin was not a big deal.
B. He felt very sorry and deeply regretful.
C. He was afraid that Zhang Guaiya would tell his family.
7. Why did the author write this passage?
A. To explain how to be a good guard in ancient China.
B. To introduce the idiom “dripping water wears through stone” and teach that small actions add up over time.
C. To describe the life of an official named Zhang Guaiya.

11. What is the passage mainly about?

B. The scientific experiments on the space station.
C. The successful arrival of Shenzhou-23 and its task.

Last summer, I was a shy teenager who hardly spoke in class. The thought of stepping into unfamiliar situations scared me. I even refused to join many school activities because of this fear. However, my school started a community service program, and my teacher encouraged me to join. Many of my classmates signed up eagerly, but I felt nervous just thinking about it. After much hesitation (犹豫), I finally signed up to help at an after-school center for young children from poor families.
On my first day, my heart beat quickly as I walked through the door. The room was noisy, with kids running around, and I felt completely out of place. I was asked to help seven-year-old Leo with his reading. Leo had trouble focusing and often threw his book aside. I had no idea how to connect with him. For a moment, I wanted to run away. But then I remembered how nervous I used to feel about reading aloud in class. Taking a deep breath, I sat beside him.
Instead of forcing him to read, I asked about his interests. His eyes lit up when he talked about space. I found a simple book about astronauts and said, “Let’s act it out together. You can be the astronaut, and I’ll be your helper.” Slowly, Leo began to sound out words. Each time he finished a page, I cheered for him. Over the following weeks, I learned to be patient and creative. I used drawings and fun games to make reading enjoyable. Leo’s confidence grew day by day, and so did mine.
By the end of summer, Leo could read short books by himself. His smile when he finished his first book alone was unforgettable. More importantly, I discovered something about myself—I was able to face challenges. I learned how to guide others, think of new ideas, and stay calm under pressure. This experience taught me that stepping out of my comfort zone helped me grow.
Now, I no longer fear trying new things. ▲ Sometimes, helping others is the best way to help yourself.
12. How did the author successfully get Leo interested in reading?
A. She found a new book about space and read it together.
B. She forced him to finish one full page and then play a role.
C. She asked about his interests and made a role-play with him.
13. What important change did the author experience through this volunteering experience?
A. She realized that staying calm under pressure was impossible for her.
B. She discovered that she could face challenges and became confident.
C. She learned that staying in her comfort zone was better for her growth.
14. Which sentence can be put into ▲ ?
A. I even plan to volunteer again next year.
B. They feel that it’s a meaningful activity.
C. I know clearly that we should think wisely.
15. What’s the structure of the passage? (P1=Paragraph 1; P2=Paragraph 2... )
A. B. C.

The 2026 Government Work Report clearly says that China will support qualified (符合条件的) areas to carry out spring and autumn holidays for primary and secondary school students, while putting into practice the wrong-time paid leave (错时带薪休假) system for workers. As a hot topic, the policy (政策) has been tested in provinces such as Shandong, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, and Sichuan.
These short holidays bring many good points to students. They can lower study pressure after a long time learning and help students keep healthy both in body and mind. With nice and comfortable weather, students can go out of classrooms to take part in real activities in nature. In this way, book knowledge is turned into real-life experience.
The holidays also bring good points to families. Wrong-time leave lets parents spend happy time with their children at lower costs, away from the large crowds of busy travel seasons. Many families choose to travel, visit relatives or go to museums together. At the same time, the holidays help develop local tourism and economy (经济), making a win-win (双赢的) situation for family and society.
However, difficulties still exist (存在) in the policy’s carrying out. The main problem is that many working parents cannot look after their children during the holidays. To solve this, many schools offer childcare services with colorful activities, and local communities offer more activities to students.
In short, spring and autumn holidays for primary and secondary school students are an important educational change. They show a turn from exam-centered education to a focus on all-round development (全面发展). With joint efforts from families, schools and society, these holidays will help students grow in a healthier and more meaningful way.

例文
Last week, I saw an old man drop his apples on the busy street. I wanted to help but felt too shy to move. Suddenly, I remembered the proverb, “Helping others is helping oneself.” It gave me great courage. I walked over quickly and picked up all the apples for him. He smiled and thanked me warmly. Since then, I have helped many people in need whenever possible. This small action made me grow braver and kinder. I realize kindness matters most in our daily life.
