From Santa Barbara to Scotland, strangers are becoming friends by going on bike rides together. They get paired up by Cycling Without Age, an organization that helps seniors go for bike rides, even if they can’t pedal themselves.
Hugh Lyon and David Lawrence, who are roughly 20 years apart in age, have been riding together for years. The 56-year-old Lawrence serves as a “pilot”, driving the trishaw — a bike with a passenger scat in the front that Cycling Without Age uses for their rides. They go for rides about once a week often discussing the history of their town.
“Despite my departed parents, it gives me a connection with people from an older generation.” said Lawrence. “And I enjoy spending time with them and hearing their stories.”
The pair have formed a friendship outside of cycling. Lawrence said he called Lyon often and went to the gym with him to help him with exercises he couldn’t do on his own.
Ole Kassow, who founded Cycling Without Age, said that’s the power of the program. “The truly powerful thing about these bike rides is that they tie people and stories together to create new relationships.” he told CBS News. “My friendships and the ability to form new relationships at any age are what define a good life, and often also a long and happy life.”
John Boettner started the Santa Barbara chapter. He has one rule for passengers. “They say, ‘What does it cost if I’m going to go for a ride?’ I say. ‘Here’s what it costs: You have to wave. If you don’t wave, I’m going to kick you out,’” he joked. He said he liked when they hit red lights, because it gave them a chance to connect with people on the road. “Driving the trishaw is the best advertisement for Cycling Without Age”, Boettner said. “When you take a 101-year-old woman for a bike ride and she holds your hand tight and says thank you and gives you a kiss on the cheek, it doesn’t get any better than that.”
24. What does the term “pilot” refer to in the text?
A. A driver of a trishaw. B. A group leader.
C. A test version of a project. D. A professional airplane operator.
25. What is the main benefit of the bike rides for the younger riders?
A. They learn more about world history.
B. They get paid for their time.
C. They form connections with the elderly.
D. They improve their cycling skills.
26. Who first started Cycling Without Age?
A. Hugh Lyon. B. David Lawrence. C. John Boettner. D. Ole Kassow.
27. Why does John Boettner require passengers to wave during the bike rides?
A. To keep them awake. B. To make them exercise.
C. To promote the program. D. To signal to other drivers.
【答案】24. A 25. C 26. D 27. C

When you set up a bird feeder in your yard, you might think you’re simply providing a meal for your feathered friends. But a fascinating new study reveals that these seemingly simple devices have a complex history of design.
Researchers in Finland have uncovered the surprising evolution (演变) of bird feeder design over the past century. The team examined Finnish newspapers and magazines from the late 19th century to the late 20th century, analyzing all content related to bird feeders. The study’s results paint a picture of constant innovation in bird feeder design.
Early designs were simple, often just flat wooden boards. As bird feeding became more popular, designs became more complex. Roofs were added to provide protection for food during rain and snow days. Concerns about cats and other predators (捕食者) led to hanging designs and feeders mounted on tall poles In the mid-20th century, there was a shift towards excluding larger birds. Designs featured smaller openings or were made to be too small for larger birds to use comfortably.
Perhaps the most significant change came in the 1980s, when concerns about salmonella (沙门氏菌) led to a complete rethinking of bird feeder design. New models prevented birds from sitting directly above the food, and materials shifted from wood to more easily cleaned metals and plastics
While this study provides a fascinating look at the evolution of bird feeder design, it does have some limitations. The research focuses only on Finland, and practices may have differed in other countries. The study relies on published materials, which may not fully represent all bird feeder designs in use at any given time.
This study demonstrated that the evolution of bird feeder design serves as a reminder of the unintended consequences of our interactions with nature. Every attempt to solve one problem — keeping out cats, excluding larger birds, or preventing disease transmission creates new challenges and motivates further innovation.
28. What did the Finnish researchers use to study bird feeder design evolution?
A. Internet blog posts.
B. Interviews with bird experts.
C. Advertisements from bird feeder manufacturers.
D. Finnish newspapers and magazines.
29. Why were bird feeders designed with roofs?
A. To make them easier to clean.
B. To attract a wider variety of birds.
C. To prevent larger birds from using them.
D. To protect the food from rain and snow.
30. What does the underlined word “excluding” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Including. B. Attracting. C. Preventing. D. Protecting.
31. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A. The History of Bird Feeding
B. The Evolution of Bird Feeder Design
C. The Impact of Bird Feeders on Wildlife
D. Innovations in Bird Feeding Techniques
【答案】28. D 29. D 30. C 31. B

We all know someone who never seems to be on time. But is there a good explanation for why some people are always late? The habit of being late probably results from a number of factors, including time perception (知觉), time management and personality, experts say.
“It is likely that there’s a mechanism in the brain that causes some people to be late for meetings because they underestimate the time it will take them to get there,” said Hugo Spiers, a professor of cognitive neuroscience at University College London.
“The hippocampus (海马体) is a region of the brain which processes some aspects of time, such as remembering when to do something and how long it takes,” Spiers said. Neurons in the hippocampus acting as “time cells” contribute to our perception and memory of events, but why exactly some people always underestimate time is unclear.
One factor may be how familiar we are with space. For the 2017 study, Spiers asked 20 students who had newly moved to London to sketch a map of their college district and estimate travel time to different destinations. While the students’ space estimates expanded if they knew an area well, their estimates of travel time reduced with familiarity. “If you’re very familiar with a space, you start to discount the trouble it will take.” Spiers said.
Another environmental factor may be crowdedness. In a 2022 study, researchers asked participants to estimate the length of more or less crowded simulated subway trips. They found that crowded commutes felt like they took 10% longer than less busy rides.
Personality also plays a role in running late. Certain personality traits, such as reduced conscientiousness (责任), can cause some people to forget tasks that they had planned ahead of time. Another factor that may influence a person’s timeliness is his or her tendency to multitask. Research has shown that people who multitask are less likely to remember and complete other scheduled tasks on time.
32. What role does the hippocampus play according to the text?
A. It processes time-related memory. B. It measures distance accurately.
C. It helps with multitasking abilities. D. It predicts future events with precision.
33. What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?
A. The importance of a college district.
B. A study on the adaptation of new students.
C. The effect of familiarity with space on time estimation.
D. The influence of environmental factors on travel time.
34. Which of the following factors is least likely to be related to being late according to the text?
A. Familiarity with space. B. The brain’s perception of time.
C. The speed of a person’s walking. D. The crowdedness of public transportation.
35. In which section of a website can we probably read the text?
A. Health Culture. B. Entertainment News.
C. Education and Learning. D. Lifestyle and Psychology.
【答案】32. A 33. C 34. C 35. D

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was a freshman in high school, I noticed a student who was different from others. His name was Kyle. Kyle had a physical problem that made it difficult for him to move around like everyone else. He used crutches (拐杖) to walk, which sometimes made him a target for bullying (欺侮) by some unfriendly students. One day, a group of mean kids ran towards him, knocking all his books out of his arms, and he fell to the ground. His glasses flew off, and I saw them land on the ground about ten feet away from him. He looked up, and I saw deep sadness in his eyes.
I felt sorry for him. So, I ran over to him, and as he searched for his glasses, I saw a tear in his eye. I gave him his glasses back and said, “Those guys are mean. They should find something better to do.” He looked at me and said, “Hey, thanks!”
We talked all the way home, and I carried his books. He turned out to be a really nice boy. We hung out every weekend, and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him. Despite his challenge, Kyle had a great spirit. He never let his difficulties define him and always faced them with bravery and a positive attitude.
Kyle was the top student in our class. He was one of those guys who really grew a lot during high school. Sometimes I felt a bit envious. And the day when we held the graduation ceremony was one of those days. I could see that he was worried about his speech. So, I patted him on the back and said, “Hey, big guy! You’ll do great!!”
He looked at me with that really grateful look and smiled. “Thanks,” he said. As he started his speech, he cleared his throat and began, “Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you get through the tough times. Your parents, your teachers, your brothers and sisters, maybe a coach... but mostly your friends. I’m here to tell all of you that being a friend to someone is the best gift you can give them. I’m going to tell you a story.”
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I just looked at my friend in surprise as he told the story of the day we met.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I smiled back, tears in my eyes.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 I just looked at my friend in surprise as he told the story of the day we met. Kyle recalled that he had thought about running away over the weekend. He talked about how he had cleaned out his school’s locker so his mom wouldn’t have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home. Meanwhile, I noticed he looked hard at me and gave me a little smile. “Thankfully, I was saved. My friend saved me from making a big mistake.” I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this friendly, well-liked boy shared his vulnerable moment. When his eyes met mine, I could see tears shining in his smiling eyes.
I smiled back, tears in my eyes. It wasn’t until that moment that I realized how much of a difference one small act of kindness had made to him. I even saw his mom and dad looking at me, smiling that same grateful smile. It hit me that we should never underestimate the power of our actions. With one small act, we can change a person’s life, for better or for worse.
①回忆:recall/look back on
②注意到:notice/spot/note
③对……产生影响:make a difference to/have an influence on
情绪类

Everything We Never Had

Inspired by Dolly Parton’s real-life time capsule(胶囊), which sits in Dollywood, waiting to be opened on Dolly’s 100th birthday, Every Time You Hear That Song is written by Jenna Voris from two points of view.

注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I just looked at my friend in surprise as he told the story of the day we met.
