It is often said that the high school period is one of the most important stages that an individual will experience, and is often seen as a critical and life-shaping time. During this period, people often begin to discover what is meaningful to them and how they plan to continue living their lives. Volunteering at St. Clare’s Hospital has helped me form a positive experience during my high school years.
When I first began volunteering, I was very nervous about meeting new people and being pushed outside of my comfort zone. At the beginning of my volunteering experience, I was rather timid and not very outgoing. Fortunately, as time went by, I discovered how to introduce myself to new volunteers, to go out of my way to make patients feel welcome, and to extend the hand of friendship to others. I learned to respect diversity, which turned out to be particularly helpful in the real world.
My volunteering experience at the hospital has led me to believe that my love and sympathy for the disabled can brighten up the day of those lonely patients. There is another valuable lesson I have learned from the volunteer program: The significance of “service” involves making a difference in the lives of others and contributing to the harmony of the community. Now I feel content each time I finish my shift. This positive feeling has motivated me to continue carrying on this worthwhile cause, and has become something that I view as having irreplaceable importance to my life.
It’s a great pity that many teenagers in my generation have not had experiences similar to mine and therefore missed out on some of the important lessons that can be learned in life. Knowing that I made a positive impact on someone is an emotionally uplifting experience that can never be matched by money or fame. And, to the best of my ability, I will follow this path of service throughout my life.

C. To explain the benefits of volunteering.
D. To introduce suitable community work.

The wandering Earth Ⅱ, a science-fiction movie, has aroused hot debate among galaxy scientists and science-fiction writers, both in China and overseas. Among them, John Gribbin, a UK-based science writer, speaks highly of rising science education in China and says that’s what makes science fiction prosper.
“It is very important in this technological age for people to understand the fundamentals of science, and then popular science writing can inform them of the world around them,” he says. “This is a bit like music. Even if you are not a great musician, if you know a little bit, you gain a deeper appreciation of great music.” Zhou Binghong, a researcher at the China Academy of Space Technology, holds a similar view. “The more scientific knowledge one gains, the more questions he or she will have about how the world runs. This leaves them wanting to know more, especially youngsters.”
Both episodes of The Wandering Earth include quite a few imagined technologies that need basic scientific knowledge to understand. In the latest one, for example, what aroused most fierce discussions among the public is a “space elevator” that enables astronauts to complete their trips to space by taking an elevator instead of a rocket. On various platforms, there are discussions about whether such an elevator is possible. If it is, what materials would be used?
For Zhou, such discussions themselves mean the public has a taste for science. He says, “Interest marks the first step toward creativity. Who knows who will emerge as an engineer for such an elevator in 50 years’ time?”
Impressed by the progress of science-related industries in China, Gribbin says that, “It is going from strength to strength,” and that, “China is one of the leading countries for scientific research and technological development, and the Chinese people are naturally interested in these developments.”
8. What leads to the popularity of science fiction according to Paragraph 1?
A. The charm of science. B. The attraction of literature.
C. The popularity of the film. D. The development of science education.
9. Why does the author mention the music in Paragraph 2?
A. To stress music is necessary in science.
B. To tell why music appreciation is important.
C. To show the relationship between music and science.
D. To indicate the importance of learning scientific knowledge.
10. Which is the function of “space elevator” in The Wandering Earth?
A. It helps control the rocket. B. It sends astronauts into space.
C. It enables astronauts to walk in space. D. It maintains astronauts’ safety in space.
11. Which of the following can be the best title for this text?
A. Putting Science into Fiction B. Fictions Gaining Popularity
C. Science Planting Seeds of Hope D. A Leading Country for Scientific Research
【答案】8. D 9. D 10. B 11. A

2. 推理判断题。根据第二段““It is very important in this technological age for people to understand the fundamentals of science, and then popular science writing can inform them of the world around them,” he says. “This is a bit like music. Even if you are not a great musician, if you know a little bit, you gain a deeper appreciation of great music.” Zhou Binghong, a researcher at the China Academy of Space Technology, holds a similar view.(“在这个科技时代,人们了解科学的基本原理是非常重要的,科学写作可以告诉他们周围的世界的信息,”他说。“这有点像音乐。即使你不是一个伟大的音乐家,如果你知道一点点,你就会对伟大的音乐有更深的欣赏。”中国空间技术研究院研究员周炳红也持类似观点)”可推知,提到音乐是为了说明学习科学知识的重要性。故选D。
3. 细节理解题。根据第三段“ In the latest one, for example, what aroused most fierce discussions among the public is a “space elevator” that enables astronauts to complete their trips to space by taking an elevator instead of a rocket.(例如,在最近的一次中,引起公众最激烈讨论的是“太空电梯”,它使宇航员能够乘坐电梯而不是火箭完成他们的太空之旅)”可知,太空电梯的功能是送宇航员去太空。故选B。
4. 主旨大意题。通读全文,特别是第一段的“ Among them, John Gribbin, a UK-based science writer, speaks highly of rising science education in China and says that’s what makes science fiction prosper.(其中,英国科学作家约翰·格里宾高度评价了中国不断发展的科学教育,并表示这是科幻小说繁荣的原因)”可知,本文的主要观点是科学知识的普及导致科幻小说更加受欢迎。由此可知,A项“把科学融入小说”适合作本文最佳标题。故选A。

Even before Molly Johnson-Jones graduated from Oxford University in 2015, she felt professional pressure to land a “prestigious (享有声望的)” job in a high-powered industry. She says she and her university friends felt there were professions that carried prestige—particularly the fields of finance, medicine and law. That’s why Johnson-Jones ended up in investment banking for two years once she graduated, even though it didn’t feel like quite the right fit.
These kinds of “very traditional industries” have indeed carried prestige, says Jonah Stillman, co-founder of GenGuru, a firm that focuses on different generations in the workplace. As Gen Z joins the workforce, however, experts and younger workers say what’s considered a “prestigious” job may be expanding. Some younger workers do still report making money is prestigious, especially as cost of living shoots up; and working for certain firms or in specific industries can make a career. But many also place equal stress on other elements, such as values of the company, flexibility, and freedom from long, intense work hours.
And some data indicates that Gen Z are indeed turning to more meaningful work. April 2023 data from LinkedIn of more than 7,000 global workers shows 64% of Gen Zers in the UK, Germany and Ireland now consider it important to work for companies that share their values. The data also shows these young workers highlight work-life balance and career growth as top draws for potential workplaces.
This change in Gen Z’s attitude towards work may be in part because mechanisms (机制) behind finding jobs and seeing other possible career paths are changing, says Josh Graff, managing director of EMEA and LATAM at LinkedIn. With a greater number of jobs being posted online, “people have so much more access to information today than we did when we were applying for a job 20-plus years ago … This allows you to have much better visibility into a wealth of roles,” he says. “That change in the workplace, in the workforce … is leading people to understand there’s a wider range of options out there.”
12. Why did Johnson-Jones end up in investment banking?
A. She had a passion for finance. B. She wanted to make a lot of money.
C. She found herself well suited for the career. D. She felt pressure to take up a highly-regarded job.
13. What is the main point of paragraph 2?
A. Making money is still the main concern of younger workers.
B. Gen Zers are not interested in traditional “prestigious” jobs.
C. The definition of a “prestigious” job is changing for younger workers.
D. Short-time work is still considered prestigious for younger workers.
14. What do most Gen Zers in the UK, Germany and Ireland consider important when it comes to work?
A. Whether they can have a good job title.
B. Whether they can receive a good salary.
C. Whether companies’ values are in line with theirs.
D. Whether they have enough opportunities to socialize.
15. What may be contributing to the change in Gen Z’s attitude towards work?
A. The changing job search methods.
B. A lack of high-paying jobs in traditional industries.
C A growing stress on companies’ social responsibility.
D. Increased access to information about potential career paths.
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. C 15. D

第二节 (满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
After an exhausting day, Jack wandered in the street, smiling while thinking of his students. Jack was a considerate and respectable teacher and his students took good care of him, too.
Suddenly, a familiar figure flashed into Jack’s eyes. It was Mark, his junior high school teacher. With a thrill. Jack dashed forward, greeted him enthusiastically, and said, “Mark, how are you?” Taking off his presbyopic glasses, Mark studied the passionate young man in front of him, hesitated for a moment and got confused, “Sorry? Have we met before?"
Not disappointed at all, Jack introduced himself in delight, “Sorry, Mark. I'm Jack Smith, from Class 2, Grade 8, graduating from Kevin Junior High School in 2001. Now I’m a teacher.” Hearing the words, Mark was puzzled but also delighted, asking a series of questions. “Why can’t I remember you? Are you a teacher now?” In spite of poor eyesight, Mark did have such a brilliant memory that he could even remember almost all his students.
“Well, in fact, you were in charge of our class for only one day, and something happened that day. I became a teacher because of your inspiration.”
Old Mark, curious, kept raising questions such as when they met and how he had inspired him to be a teacher.
“One day, a friend of mine came in with a nice new watch. I was so crazy about it that I decided to take it and I did. After a short while, my friend found it had disappeared and immediately reported it to the teacher, you, who happened to be in charge of our class that day because our teacher was ill.”
A mixture of emotions floated into Jack’s eyes when he recalled the shameful history. That day, Mark came and told the whole class that someone in the class could not find his watch and required that whoever took it return it quickly. Jack was too frightened to hand it in.
Then, Mark closed the door and told all the students to get up. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
But Mark kept searching other students’ pockets. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Then, Mark closed the door and told all the students to get up. He asked the students to face the wall and cover their eyes with handkerchiefs. Then he searched the students’ pockets one by one. When Mark found the watch from Jack’s pocket, Jack was afraid and ashamed, with no place to hide himself. He thought that he would be condemned and punished by Mark, despised by his classmates and branded with a bad mark that would never be erased in his life.
But Mark kept searching everyone’s pockets. Until he finished searching all the students’ pockets, Jack realized it was not what he thought. Mark returned the watch that was found in Jack’s pocket to the owner and then told the students to sit back and continue with his class. Until Jack left school after graduation, the theft of the watch was never mentioned or passed on. It was not only compassion and wisdom, but also a kind of selfless help. Jack would never forget and would be grateful for it.

4. What does the author think of the high school period?
A. It deserves to be taken seriously. B. It is often criticized by people.
C. It brings no significance to life. D. It is full of unplanned experiences.
5. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The importance of diversity in the world.
B. The author’s changes brought about by volunteering
C. Friendship between volunteers and patients.
D. Ways to help and respect patients.
6. What does the underlined word “timid” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Confident. B. Shy. C. Brave. D. Calm.
7. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To call on the young to volunteer.
B. To share the author’s volunteering experience.
C. To explain the benefits of volunteering.
D To introduce suitable community work.

D

But Mark kept searching other students’ pockets __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
