A Chinese rose named Baohua, developed in Yunnan, drew wide attention online in 2025. People noticed it not only for its colors, but also for the story behind its name.
Yunnan, with its warm and wet weather, is one of China’s main fresh flower planting areas. Thanks to modern flower-growing technology, researchers there have developed a new kind Chinese rose, Baohua. Unlike some brightly colored foreign roses, Baohua has softer colors, which many people see as the beauty of traditional Chinese culture.
The name Baohua was not chosen by researchers alone. They invited netizens (网民) to take part in the naming activity. The name was first suggested to express one person’s love and memory for family members. It also echoes (呼应) an old Chinese saying, which means good places produce (生产) fine things and talented people grow up in beautiful lands. Because of this warm meaning, the name soon touched many people.
Later, two more roses were developed. One was named Jiaolong and the other was named Wenxiu. These roses are planted to praise hard-working role models. Modern flower research helped create these flowers, and their names also remind people of love, courage and hard work.
As more local flowers enter larger markets, they may help the world see the beauty of Chinese roses in a new way.
21. Baohua is a new kind of rose developed by foreign researchers.
22. Yunnan’s pleasant climate helps it become a fresh flower planting area.
23. Baohua gets its cultural meaning from a modern popular online saying.

If you get a small burn (烫伤) while cooking, don’t worry. There is a simple first-aid rule to follow: COOL. It is easy to remember and follow. Here are the key steps.
First, move away from the danger. Put the burned area under cool running water at once. Keep it there for 15-20 minutes. Do not use ice.
While you are cooling the burn, slowly take off rings or tight (紧的) clothes near it. But do not remove anything stuck to the skin.
After cooling, cover the burn with a clean and soft cloth. This can protect the burn against germs.
If the burn is large, or the pain is serious, go to see a doctor or call 120 right away.

Edgar Snow was a brave American reporter. In 1936, he made a journey to northwest China. At that time, this faraway area had little contact with the outside world, and few foreign visitors could reach there. As a result, people outside China knew very little about the life and conditions there. However, Edgar Snow wanted to see the truth with his own eyes.
After a long and tiring journey, Snow finally arrived in Bao’an. He stayed there for about four months, from June to October in 1936. He tried his best to know the real facts in different ways. First, he visited nearby towns and villages. Second, he talked with many local people. Third, he joined some of their daily activities. Besides, he wrote down what he saw and heard. In these ways, he learned about their daily life and the difficulties they faced. Snow also met many people who had taken part in the Long March (长征). The Red Army crossed high mountains and wide rivers and walked thousands of miles. Although they experienced cold weather and poor living conditions, they never gave up. Their courage, hope and strong will deeply moved Snow.
During his visit, Snow interviewed top leaders and ordinary soldiers. He recorded their real experiences and took many precious (宝贵的) photos. With these notes and photos, he wrote his famous book Red Star Over China. The book first came out in London in 1937 and soon became popular around the world. It helped foreign readers learn more about the real situation in northwest China at that time. Even today, Red Star Over China is still a valuable book. It helps teenagers understand history better and learn from the strong spirit of the people described in the book.

Have you ever made a paper ring? Try this: take a long piece of paper, twist (旋转) one of the ends through 180°, and glue the ends together. You’ve just made a Möbius band (莫比乌斯环)! This special ring was found by a German maths expert named August Möbius in 1858.
It looks like a normal ring, but it is very different. A normal ring has two sides, but the Möbius band has only one side. You can test this yourself. Draw a line along the band without lifting your pen. You will cover the whole surface and come back to your starting point! This shows there is no “other side”.
What happens if you cut it? If you cut a normal ring in half along the middle, you will get two small rings. But if you cut the Möbius band the same way, you won’t get two bands. Instead, you will get one large twisted band! It’s like magic!
In our real life, this special shape (形状) is used in many places. For example, belts in factories are easily broken on one side. If the belt is made like a Möbius band, all parts of its surface are used, so it can work for a much longer time. Builders and artists also love it. Some famous buildings like the Beijing Phoenix (凤凰) Center use the Möbius design, which makes buildings look quite modern. Besides, because its surface never ends — having no real start or end — it has become a sign of endless love. Many people wear rings or necklaces with this design.
How amazing that a simple twist can create something wonderful and full of surprises!
36. What makes a Möbius band different from a normal paper ring?
A. It can be cut. B. It has a line on it. C. It has only one side. D. It is made of paper.
37. What can you get if you cut a Möbius band along the middle of the band?
A. A large Möbius band. B. Two small Möbius bands.
C. A small Möbius band. D. Two large Möbius bands.
38. Which of the following pictures may use the idea of Möbius design?
A. B. C. D.
39. Why can a factory belt made like a Möbius band last longer?
A. Because it is stronger than other belts. B. Because every part of its surface is used.
C. Because it is much bigger than normal belts. D. Because it doesn’t need any machines to work.
40. What is the structure of the text?
A. B. C. D.

Growing up with Challenges
Challenges are everywhere in our life. I once faced a big challenge in English. I was weak in speaking and feared talking in class. I almost gave up.
Luckily, I made a plan to change. I read English articles aloud every morning and practiced conversations with my classmates after school. Gradually, I became confident. Later, I even took part in an English speech competition.
This experience taught me that challenges help us grow. As long as we keep trying, we will overcome difficulties and grow.
