Two letters to Mr Friend
Letter 1 from Kitty
Dear Mr Friend,
I am Zhang Ke. I have some problems with my parents, and I am not sure what to do.
I feel like my parents make all the decisions in my life and I do not have any chance to be myself. They choose my clothes for me. When I want to wear something different, they say they know best. I am never allowed to eat food my parents think is unhealthy, even as a treat. If we go to a restaurant, they order for me without asking what I want.
I know I am young, but I think I should be able to make some decisions. Every time I try talking to them about this, they either lose patience or just stick to their own opinions. I know my parents love me, but I think they are too strict with me. I wonder if we understand each other at all! Do you have any advice?
All the best,
Zhang Ke
Letter 2 from Simon
Dear Mr Friend,
My name is Luo Yang. I am under a lot of stress at school!
I feel like I never have enough time to do everything I need to. I often have to spend more time on my schoolwork than my classmates, so I have to stay up late to finish it. This means I am often tired the next day. Sometimes I waste time on my mobile phone when I still have some schoolwork to do. I always regret it after, but I just do not know how to control myself. Moreover, I love playing football, and I often play for hours with my friends after school. But I do not want my schoolwork to suffer because of it. I wonder whether I should cut back on football.
Now I am falling behind in many of my classes. I need to find a way to fix this situation. I really hope you can offer me some advice.
Best wishes,
Luo Yang

Two common teenage problems
Teenage years are a stage of change and growth. Every day, teenagers are dealing with all kinds of stresses and problems. Two common problems are body changes and friendship troubles.
Teenagers‘ bodies change greatly during this stage. It is common for them to grow taller and for their bodies to experience rapid changes in shape. Many teenagers suffer from skin problems, which make them feel ugly. And changes in mood are very common. Sometimes, it is hard for them to deal with all these changes.
Most teenagers also run into trouble with some of their friends. Sometimes your friends may want you to do things that you probably do not want to do, but it might be hard for you to say no. After all, you do not want to risk losing the friendship.
It is important for teenagers to understand that they are not alone and that almost everyone goes through these problems. If you are feeling bad during your teenage years, first try talking to your friends or an adult who can give you advice.

Integration D2:
Millie‘s email to Raymond
Dear Raymond,
I’m sorry to hear about your problem. School bullying is a serious problem, but there are things you can do.
My advice is: do not stay silent. Tell a teacher or your parents about what is happening. They can help you. Do remember that you are not alone, and that the bully is the one with the problem, not you.
Have you tried staying with friends during break times? Bullies often pick on people who are alone. Also, try to act confidently, even if you don‘t feel it. Bullies usually look for people who seem easy to hurt.
Let me know if I can help in any way. I’m here for you.
I hope things get better soon.
Best wishes,
Millie

Everybody knows how important it is for students to get a good night’s sleep every night. You aren’t able to do your best and keep up with all of your tasks unless you sleep well. I’m sure you already know that you should go to bed at a proper hour. Most experts agree that the best number of hours is eight, and this has been accepted as common sense. However, I was young once and I know that most of you get much less sleep than that—and in some cases it will influence your schoolwork.
I read an interesting article in a teacher’s magazine recently. They did a study of 848 students in Wales. Worryingly, the results showed that teenagers are facing a new problem. They may go to bed and get up at suitable times, but a growing number are waking up in the middle of the night, not to use the bathroom or have a snack but because of a new phenomenon (现象): FOMO—Fear Of Missing Out!
According to the article, schoolchildren are suffering because of a growing trend (趋势) to wake up during the night to check their phones. Afraid of missing a reply or chance to join in a chat, teenagers are waking at all times of the night, going online. All this happens when they should be sound asleep.
Experts are worried about this growing trend and the report shows some worrying facts that I’d like to share with you:
»23% of 12 to 15-year-olds wake up nearly every night to use phones. Another 15% wake up at night once a week for the same reason.
»One in three students are always tired and unable to study well.
»Students who use phones during the night are more possible to suffer from depression (抑郁) and anxiety.
So switch off your phones at night. The world won’t end. I give you my word that you won’t miss anything important.
11.From the passage we know that it is very important for students to ________.
A.have too much homework every day B.get a good night’s sleep every night
C.join in an online chat every night D.wake up early every night to use phones
12.Students won’t be able to study well ________.
A.if they don’t sleep well B.if they have phones in class
C.if they don’t use common sense D.if they have a sound sleep
13.The writer is worried by ________.
A.what an expert has told him B.what he is seeing with his pupils
C.what he has read in the magazine D.what other teachers have told him
14.Research shows that schoolchildren are tired because they ________.
A.are going to bed very late B.are eating snacks at night
C.are getting up too early in the morning D.are waking up in the middle of the night
15.Fear Of Missing Out is ________.
A.a feeling of not going out at night B.a fear of missing the newest phones
C.a feeling of not keeping up with your tasks D.a fear of missing chances of chatting online
People believe that almost all children are born clever kids. The problem is how to stay clever as they are growing older. Being careless and 16 (patient) will not only be bad for learning, but also for their future life.
A famous 17 (science) once said that a troubled heart is a distracted (注意力分散的) mind. If problems are always on his mind, it’s hard to focus. Some students think their parents are strict 18 them and can’t get on well with them. Some students always keep worries to 19 (they), and this drives them even 20 (mad). Others don’t know how to deal with their problems. Feeling helpless, they have no choice but 21 (give) up.
My cousin had the same problems. 22 he knew his parents and teachers cared, he didn’t know how to talk about his problems. He bought a book on how to achieve a balance between study and play. He found its advice was worth 23 (follow). For example, the book advises that when studying, full attention should 24 (pay) to the lessons. It also points out the importance of growing up in a well-rounded way.
Since then, everything 25 (change) for my cousin. We hope more and more students like my cousin will find their path to growth.
Waking up to success
Feeling tired is very common, especially when you have too much homework and too many activities. But there are some easy ways to help you look and feel better.
When you get up, go outside for a few minutes. Just 5 to 10 minutes in the sun can help your body feel more awake in the day.
Besides sunlight, a little exercise helps a lot. Even easy activities like simple yoga, stretching, or a 10-to-20-minute walk can make your mind clear and help you relax.
But movement is not the only way to get more energy. Deep breathing helps too. When you are stressed, your breath becomes shallow and your muscles get tight. This makes you more tired.
Try slow, deep breaths. Breathe out longer than you breathe in. This helps you relax and calm down. If you need to focus before class, try box breathing. Breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, breathe out for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds. After a few minutes, you will feel more focused.
Good posture (姿势) is also important. Your posture shows if you are tired. If you slump forward (驼背), you look and feel more tired. Sit up straight, lift your chest, and imagine you are growing taller. This makes you look awake and feel better at once.
If you sit for long every day, roll your shoulders back every hour. This simple action helps your muscles, improves blood flow to your brain, and keeps you awake.
26.How do you feel when you have too much homework and too many activities?
27.How long should you stay outside in the sun to feel more awake during the day?
28.Why does the writer suggest you not to slump forward when sitting?
29.What can help you relax according to the passage?
30.What method do you think is the most helpful in your daily life? Why?

A.what an expert has told him B.what he is seeing with his pupils
C.what he has read in the magazine D.what other teachers have told him
