6. What is the main argument against the “melting pot” metaphor?
A. It is scientifically inaccurate.
B. It implies forced assimilation.
C. It is historically outdated.
7. What alternative metaphor does the woman prefer?
A. A tapestry. B. A mosaic. C. A salad bowl.
W: I’ve never liked the “melting pot” idea for multicultural societies. It suggests everyone should blend into one homogeneous culture, losing their distinctness.
M: What’s wrong with aiming for unity?
W: True unity shouldn’t require erasure. The “melting pot” historically often meant conforming to a dominant Anglo-Protestant norm in the US. A better metaphor is a “mosaic” or “tapestry” — where individual cultural pieces remain distinct but together create a beautiful, stronger whole. Diversity is the strength, not an ingredient to be melted away.
M: So you value integration that preserves unique identities over assimilation?
W: Exactly. Assimilation is about subtraction; integration is about addition and mutual enrichment.

Sharks are dying at staggering rates, primarily due to fishing activities. Nearly one-third of shark species globally are threatened with extinction. While some sharks are intentionally targeted, more than half are caught incidentally as bycatch and later thrown away, contributing significantly to their decline.
In response, regional fisheries management organizations have introduced retention (留存) bans that require fishermen to release accidentally captured sharks. Currently, 17 oceanic shark species are protected under such bans in tuna fisheries.
A research team from UC Santa Barbara collected data from over 150 published studies covering nearly 150 species to estimate mortality (死亡) rates for caught and released sharks. Their findings revealed particularly high post-release mortality among certain groups: smaller sharks, deep-water species, and those requiring constant swimming to breathe. Notably, thresher sharks, hammerheads, and smoothhound sharks showed mortality rates ranging from 30% to 65%.
The study demonstrated that while retention bans could reduce shark mortality by three times on average, this reduction remained insufficient to achieve sustainable levels for heavily fished species such as mako and silky sharks.
The authors stress that retention bans are a good first step, but they must be combined with other measures. These include changing fishing gear (for example, not using steel wires in longline fishing), protecting key shark habitats (especially areas where young sharks are born and grow up), and setting limits on how many sharks can be caught. Such comprehensive approaches are essential for effective shark conservation.
Moreover, the researchers point out that we know very little about related fish with cartilaginous fishes — such as rays, skates, and chimaeras. These fishes face similar threats of extinction, but there are not enough studies on how many die due to fishing. The research team is now working with international tuna organizations to encourage conservation talks and find effective mixes of policies.
24. What does the underlined word “staggering” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Safe. B. Steady. C. Alarming. D. Declining.

A. avoid fishing in shark habitats B. release accidentally caught sharks
C. use special equipment to protect sharks D. limit the number of sharks caught per year
26. Which sharks are most likely to die after being released?
A. Those living in shallow waters. B. Large species near the coast.
C. Deep-water species. D. Species with slow reproductive rates.
27. What is paragraph 5 mainly talking about?
A. The retention bans need to be further improved.
B. Fishing bans in saving all shark species are successful.
C. Broader measures are needed to protect sharks effectively.
D. Focusing only on young sharks is important.

根据第三段“Their findings revealed particularly high post-release mortality among certain groups: smaller sharks, deep-water species, and those requiring constant swimming to breathe. (研究结果显示,某些鲨鱼群体放生后的死亡率格外高:体型较小的鲨鱼、深水鲨鱼物种,以及需要持续游动才能呼吸的鲨鱼。)”可知,深水鲨鱼物种放生后容易死亡。
【27题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第五段“The authors stress that retention bans are a good first step, but they must be combined with other measures. These include changing fishing gear (for example, not using steel wires in longline fishing), protecting key shark habitats (especially areas where young sharks are born and grow up), and setting limits on how many sharks can be caught. Such comprehensive approaches are essential for effective shark conservation.(研究人员强调,捕捞留存禁令虽是良好的第一步,但必须与其他措施相结合。

Under the autumn sky of Tuohula Xinjiang, golden rice stalks sway gently. Ayinigeer Tuoheti, a 28-year-old computer science graduate, wanders through the fields, checking the ripening crop. Her digital skills are bridging the divide between her family’s traditional rice business and the modern age.
In 2020, Ayinigeer returned home to assist her father — who’d built a 1994 rice processing plant but his health weakened and struggled with business communications. She found the family’s work stuck in the backward reality: the ledger book, handwritten records, and carbon paper. She resolved to transform the business.
First, she turned their small farmer cooperative into a company. Exploiting her computer background, she automated invoicing, inventory, and order processing, shifting all work to electronic systems. To secure high-quality rice, she partnered with over 120 households, who transferred the management rights of their land to her company. Her company provided seeds and training, bought harvests above market prices, and shared profits-boosting farmers’ incomes while ensuring premium raw materials.
In 2023, she tried livestreaming on electronic sales platform. With a smartphone, she presented viewers with local rice fields, processing plants, and family meals with their local products. The initial phase was tough, but local governments trained her in livestreaming skills. Their authenticity won audience: daily orders grew from 12 to hundreds. Now, From March to September this year, they had 180,000 orders through livestreaming, with 7,000 on a single day-that’s nearly 35 tons of rice moving directly from their fields to households across China.
The numbers tell the resulting. In early 2024, influencers from across China were reaching out to us, she said. “They wanted to partner with us because our product had proven appealing.”
The phenomenal success of Ayinigeer’s livestreaming, however, stems not just from technology, but Tuohula’s rice quality: Wensu’s temperature swings, selenium-rich soil, and Tianshan snowmelt water make it sweet and aromatic. Local farming is 98% mechanized, and a 1998 seed base (investing 1 million yuan yearly) develops high-quality varieties-including the seeds Ayinigeer uses.
28. What did Ayinigeer do first to improve the family business?
A. She started livestreaming on Douyin.
B. She modernized the operation system.
C. She partnered with over 120 local households.
D. She inspected crops personally.
29. Why could Ayinigeer’s sales model attract viewers?
A. She offered very low rice prices.
B. She used professional broadcasting equipment.
C. She presented authentic rice production scenes.
D. She accumulated many followers before livestreaming.
30. What can we infer about Tuohula’s rice?
A. It is popular all over the world.
B. Local natural conditions contributed to its popularity.
C. It is only sold in southern Xinjiang.
D. Its production cost is much lower than average.
31. Which is the most appropriate title?
A. Digital Skills Revive Hometown Rice B. Livestreaming Makes Rice Famous
C. Graduate Succeeds in Rice Business D. Quality Rice Boosts Agriculture
B 29. C 30. B 31. A

Plastic has always been a double-edged sword — multi-purpose and cheap, but chemically stable. Traditional recycling methods involve multiple stages of sorting, cleaning, and melting (融化), which are energy-intensive and degrade the material’s quality. Turning plastic into fuel has been explored before, but existing techniques require high heat, complex catalysts (催化剂), and often produce impure results.
Now, a groundbreaking cooperation between scientists in the US and China has brought the world one step closer to a real solution. Using a specially designed catalytic reaction, researchers found a way to break down long plastic polymer (聚合物) chains into short hydrocarbon molecules — the building blocks of fuel — in a single step.
The team’s secret lies in a novel catalytic material that operates at medium temperatures — far lower than those used in conventional methods. Unlike traditional recycling, which melts plastic into lower-grade products, this catalyst essentially reduces plastics into usable hydrocarbon chains in just a few hours. The output can then be further processed into fuels for vehicles or even planes. According to Professor Zhang Wei, a chemical engineer from the Chinese partner university, the process transforms 95% of the plastic into usable hydrocarbons, leaving minimal remains and almost no harmful byproducts.
The implications of this breakthrough extend far beyond scientific curiosity. If widely used, the one-step plastic-to-fuel method could dramatically reduce both plastic waste and non-renewable fuel dependence.
Promising as the results are, experts stress that the cost of catalysts, the difficulty of collecting mixed plastic waste, and the issue of carbon emissions from burning fuels are key challenges to be addressed. For this reason, scientists see the innovation not as an end point, but as a temporary fix toward a cleaner future.
While questions remain, this innovation marks a hopeful turn in humanity’s long battle with plastic waste. It transforms what was once pollution into power and demonstrates that the solutions to big problems often lie in rethinking waste not as garbage-but as potential.
32. What is a key advantage of the new method of recycling plastics?
A. Low costs. B. Simple processes. C. High security. D. Adjustable reaction.
33. What does the novel catalyst help with?
A. Speeding up waste collection. B. Adjusting the operating temperature.
C. Minimizing harmful byproducts. D. Turning plastics into basic chemicals.
34. How do scientists regard the method?
A. A dead end. B. A starting point. C. A stepping stone. D. A definite answer.
35. What inspiration does the innovation bring to us?
A. New views create possibilities. B. Human effort overcomes challenges.
C. Close teamwork works wonders. D. Tough problems lead to innovations.
B 33. D 34. C 35. A

We all know stress from work can follow us home, but what if it’s not just your partner or kids feeling its effect? A study by Mitropoulos and Andrukonis, published last week in Scientific Reports, uncovers a surprising yet deeply relatable finding: your job stress can “cross over” to your dog, particularly when you can’t stop thinking about work after hours. ____36____ That is to say, even your furry companion might be quietly suffering alongside you.
The invisible link: when your stress becomes your dog’s
Dogs are incredibly sensitive. ____37____ Therefore, it can be said that dogs are masters of emotional detection. Scientists have long known that dogs experience emotional contagion (感染); in other words, they “catch” our feelings. Now, this study is one of the first to show that job-related stress, when paired with constant overthinking, can result in real behavioral stress responses in dogs.
The most convincing finding?
In the study, dogs whose owners reported high job stress and frequently focused on work showed more behavioral signs of stress, such as pacing, whining, or reduced playfulness. ____38____ It suggests our dogs may be more stressed than we realize.
What can dog owners do?
Manage your emotional clues. Dogs can sense human feelings easily. So try to be conscious of how you speak and move around them, especially during stressful times. ____39____.
Mindfulness practices — like meditation, deep breathing, or simply being present — help reduce work-related overthinking and allow for genuine relaxation with your dog.
____40____ If your job stress feels unmanageable, consider reaching out for help, whether from your employer, a therapist, or a stress management program. Caring for yourself is one of the best ways to care for your pet.
A. Get support if you need it.
B. The effects of stress on humans go further than we think.
C. Turn off work notifications and fully engage with your dog.
D. Gentle tones and relaxed body language can help calm your dog.

上文“A study by Mitropoulos and Andrukonis, published last week in Scientific Reports, uncovers a surprising yet deeply relatable finding: your job stress can “cross over” to your dog, particularly when you can’t stop thinking about work after hours. (Mitropoulos和Andrukonis上周发表在《科学报告》上的一项研究,揭示了一个令人惊讶却又极易引起共鸣的发现:你的工作压力会 “转移”到你的狗身上,尤其是当你下班后还忍不住琢磨工作的时候。)”提到工作压力会转移到狗身上,尤其是下班后还在想工作时。选项G“It turns out our dogs share not only our homes, but also our emotional burdens. (事实证明,我们的狗狗不仅和我们同住一个屋檐下,还会和我们一同承担情感负担。)”延续上文内容,指出狗会和我们一起承担情感负担。
【37题详解】
上文“Dogs are incredibly sensitive. (狗狗异常敏感。)”指出狗非常敏感。选项F“They can read our facial expressions and sense changes in tone and posture. (它们能读懂我们的面部表情,感知语气和姿势的变化。)”具体解释了狗的敏感体现在哪些方面,与下文“Therefore, it can be said that dogs are masters of emotional detection. (因此,可以说狗狗是情感探测的高手。)”形成因果关系,衔接自然。
【38题详解】
上文“In the study, dogs whose owners reported high job stress and frequently focused on work showed more behavioral signs of stress, such as pacing, whining, or reduced playfulness. (研究中,那些主人自称工作压力大且频繁惦记工作的狗狗,表现出了更多有压力的行为,比如踱步、呜咽,或是玩耍的兴致降低。)”指出压力大且常想工作的主人,其狗会表现出更多压力行为。选项E“However, owners in life often fail to recognize these stress behaviors. (然而,生活中主人往往意识不到这些应激行为。)”通过转折,引出狗的压力被忽视的现象,与下文“It suggests our dogs may be more stressed than we realize. (这表明我们的狗可能比我们意识到的更有压力。)”呼应,符合逻辑。
【39题详解】
上文“Manage your emotional clues. Dogs can sense human feelings easily. So try to be conscious of how you speak and move around them, especially during stressful times. (管理好你的情绪信号。狗狗很容易察觉到人的情绪。所以,要留意在它们面前说话的方式和肢体动作,尤其是在压力大的时候。)”建议要注意在狗面前的说话方式和动作,尤其是压力大的时候。选项D“Gentle tones and relaxed body language can help calm your dog. (温和的语气和放松的肢体语言有助于安抚你的狗狗。)”是对注意说话方式和动作的具体说明,给出了实际做法,衔接紧密。
【40题详解】
空处为段首句,为本段主要内容。根据下文“If your job stress feels unmanageable, consider reaching out for help, whether from your employer, a therapist, or a stress management program. Caring for yourself is one of the best ways to care for your pet. (要是工作压力大到难以承受,可以考虑寻求帮助,无论是向雇主求助、找治疗师咨询,还是参加压力管理课程。照顾好自己,也是照顾好宠物的最佳方式之一。)”可知,本段讲的是如果工作压力难以应对,可以寻求雇主、治疗师或压力管理项目的帮助。选项A“Get support if you need it. (如果需要,寻求支持。)”是对下文内容的概括,作为该段的主题句,引出具体的求助方式,结构合理。

Sean Royston, and his long-time friend, Tolin Annis had a tradition to head out for an expedition every other year. In 2016, they decided to kayak (划皮艇) the Rocks NationalLakeshore, a challenging route on Lake Superior, teibentrti tuo bobson l rast ouodern.
On September 13, they loaded up on food and camping devices, climbed into their kayaks, and pushed off from a beach near the national park’s headquarters. They planned to return in a week. They moved through small waves and headed northeast. Soon the lakeshore’s trademark cliffs (悬崖) began to rise on their right. Away from the shore, the head wind grew to the forecasted 10 knots — and kept rising. Still, they never considered turning around.
They had been rowing maybe 90 minutes when, quite suddenly, the waves grew to two metres and steepened. The wind rose to an intense 20 knots, putting them in danger of flipping over. “It went bad fast!” shouted Tolin, who was in the lead about 20 metres ahead of Sean. Meanwhile, the wind pushed them closer to the cliff, where the waves became even steeper and rolled them into the water.
Sean managed to get back to kayak, holding onto it for stability, and then paddled using his free hand. But he couldn’t make any progress against the strong wind. “My arms are giving out.” Sean thought to himself, “I gotta call now.” Using a VHF radio clipped to his life jacket, Sean called:“Mayday, two kayakers stuck.” But the tall cliffs blocked the signal from reaching anyone. When he raised his head, his friend had disappeared from sight. The man yelled to his friend at the top of his lungs, but there’s no reply.
Sean struggled until the waves finally pushed him away from the shoreline and farther out in the lake. Exhausted, he floated on his back and considered his options. Sean decided to turn downwind, towards the beach where they had launched that morning. It was 5 kilometers away. “I’m a swimmer.” Sean talked himself up and started kicking.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Luckily, after about three hours, Sean saw the beach within reach. With his last strength, he pulled and kicked against the crashing waves, his lungs burning and limbs numb. Collapsing onto the sand, he gasped for air, but he knew the clock was ticking. “I must hurry up to save Tolin!” he muttered. Dragging his trembling feet, he headed toward the park headquarters, shouting, “One man is drowning along the cliff! Help!” Rangers heard him and rushed him inside for treatment, calling for the rescue team at the same time.
The rescue team headed out immediately for Tolin. A helicopter soared over the cliffs, its spotlight piercing through the rain. Suddenly, a faint whistle echoed — Tolin hung on to a rock, waving his arm. A rescuer on the rope approached him carefully, and then pulled him up aboard, wrapping him in a blanket. Minutes later, they took Tolin back to the headquarters to reunite with his friend. Sean held Tolin tight, tears streaming down his face. “Thank goodness you’ re fine,” Sean said, gripping his friend’s shoulders. Tolin nodded, “Your bravery and determination saved us.”

For high school readers seeking science fiction where young women are the main characters, the genre (体裁) offers exciting adventures that are both imaginative and empowering. Here are four standout sci-fi novels that provide perfect gateways into the genre.
Show Us Who You Are
Show Us Who You Are by Elle McNicoll presents a stimulating look at technology. When the main character, Cora, is given a chance to connect with her comatose (昏迷的) friend through a 3-D image, she sees it as a blessing. However, she soon uncovers the tech company’s dark secrets and dangerous agendas. This novel is more than a simple mystery; it’s an exploration of what it means to be human in a digital age and the importance of challenging powerful institutions.

With amazing artwork, the series is a wild ride across unique worlds, featuring a determined heroine who must unlock her potential and learn to lead.
Jennifer Chan Is Not Alone
Jennifer Chan Is Not Alone by Tae Keller is a powerful combination of sci-fi mystery and realistic fiction. The story begins when Mallory’s neighbor, an eager alien hunter, disappears. As Mallory investigates the truth using clues from a journal, the story explores deep themes of middle school. It’s a sensitive and tense exploration of how we treat those who are different and the secrets we keep from others and ourselves.
When You Reach Me
The Newbery Medal-winning When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead is a master class in complex storytelling. Set in the 1970s New York City, it follows sixth-grader Miranda as she receives mysterious notes that seem to predict the future.
A. Safe. B. Steady. C. Alarming. D. Declining.
25. Retention bans require fishermen to ________.
A. avoid fishing in shark habitats B. release accidentally caught sharks
C. use special equipment to protect sharks D. limit the number of sharks caught per year

D

E. However, owners in life often fail to recognize these stress behaviors.
F. They can read our facial expressions and sense changes in tone and posture.
G. It turns out our dogs share not only our homes, but also our emotional burdens.
