As a travel enthusiast, I have always wanted to visit Iceland. Recently, I had a chance to speak with Ann Peters of a tour agency about visiting the must-see destination.
According to Peters, the weather is the best in Iceland during the summer months when average temperatures can range from 10℃ to 15℃ and there can be nearly 24 hours of daylight. So June, July and August are the most popular months to visit Iceland. Actually, in 2023, Iceland had over 1.9 million visitors in June and over 2 million visitors in July and August.
But Peters told me that while most people book a trip with their desired weather in mind, they might experience the exact opposite. “The weather in Iceland is influenced by its location in the North Atlantic, where warm air from the Gulf Stream meets the cold Arctic air, resulting in frequent and dramatic weather changes,” she says, “In a single day, you might encounter sunshine, rain, wind and even snow, regardless of the season.”
The best time to see the northern lights is between September and March, during autumn and spring. But even though Iceland is one of the best places to see the northern lights, catching a glimpse of the amazing lights isn’t warranted. “The conditions need to be just right: clear skies and strong solar activity,” says Peters.
Spotting the lights is definitely on my future bucket list, so Peters recommends booking my stay at countryside locations and giving myself 5-10 days of flexibility to increase chances. Peters recommends purchasing a Reykjavik City Card while I am in Iceland, which provides access to many of the city’s museums and swimming pools, unlimited use of public transportation and discounts at various other attractions. The card also includes entry to the Reykjavik Maritime Museum and the National Gallery of Iceland.
24. What may be an advantage of visiting Iceland in August?
A. The local temperature is relatively stable.
B. There are fewer travelers due to the weather.
C. Extended daylight hours allow for more activities.
D. There are higher chances to see the northern lights.
25. What does Peters emphasize in paragraph 3?
A. The climate effects of the cold Arctic air. B. The unpredictability of Iceland’s weather.
C. The tips on dealing with weather changes. D. The significance of Iceland’s unique location.
26. What does “warranted” underlined in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Missed. B. Assured. C. Approved. D. Appreciated.
27. How can the Reykjavik City Card benefit travelers?
A. By reducing potential risks of their tour. B. By giving them free access to attractions.
C. By making their tour more cost-effective. D. By offering them a discount on air tickets.

Over a decade ago, the science fiction series Black Mirror showed a story about using artificial intelligence to bring back loved ones. Thanks to technological advancement, the latest AI technology brings hope of recreating loved ones through virtual form.
Recently, it was revealed that well-known musician Tino Bao had created a digital version of his daughter who in 2021 passed away due to a rare disease at the age of 22. With the help of Xiaoice, Microsoft Asia’s AI branch based in China, Bao was able to recreate his daughter Bao Rong as an AI-powered virtual figure. Tino Bao, his family and the team went to great lengths to piece together pictures, audio-visual recordings, and narrated memories of Rong. After thousands of trials and errors, they presented the life-like digital human who speaks in both Mandarin and English. Bao has finally launched a company to bring the technological miracle to other families experiencing such loss.
However, this technological achievement has also been accompanied by many debates. The idea of bringing back a loved one through AI may seem comforting. Still, researchers caution that constantly interacting with an AI version of a lost loved one could potentially affect the natural grieving (悲伤) process, leaving individuals stuck in a state of denial. This could lead to lengthened grief and other mental health issues. Furthermore, there’s a risk that people may become overly dependent on the technology, preferring their interactions with the AI version over forming new, real-life relationships.
With the case of Bao Rong out in the open, AI resurrection (复活) has become a business. From simple “talking pictures” that sound nothing like the loved ones to deep fake videos of actors speaking with the faces of those who passed away, the lower end of the market is more “artificial” than “intelligent”. Therefore, it is crucial to establish proper regulations and ethical standards to ensure that the use of AI-resurrection technology is safe and responsible now.
28. Why does the author mention Black Mirror in paragraph 1?
A. To show the influence of science fiction on technology
B. To lead to the discussion about AI resurrection.
C. To criticize the unrealistic description of AI in movies
D. To highlight the advancement of artificial intelligence.
29. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The popularity of AI-resurrection technology.
B. Reasons for making a digital version of Bao Rong.
C. Challenges of developing a life-like digital human.
D. The process of creating an AI-powered virtual figure.
30. What is a potential negative impact of AI technology?
A. It can become overly independent. B. It can shorten the grieving process.
C. It can cause longer sadness and mental issues. D. It can lengthen the interaction with Al version.
31. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. The market for AI resurrection lacks proper management.
B. AI resurrection technology is highly advanced.
C. The market for AI resurrection is very profitable.
D. AI resurrection products are of poor quality.
D
Even after eating a large meal, most people can still find room for sweets. Now, research in mice shows that the nerve cells behind feeling full also cause sugar cravings (渴望). In other words, there seems to be a nerve-related basis for our love of dessert.
Previous studies have shown that natural chemicals called opioids (阿片类物质) in the brain play a crucial role in sugar cravings. These opioids are made by special cells in a brain area that controls appetite and hormones. Known as POMC neurons (神经元), these special brain cells also help people feel satisfied after eating.
To understand whether the cells have a role in sugar cravings, scientists in Germany, led by Henning Fenselau, traced the signals POMC neurons send. They did so by bathing brain slices from three mice in a glowing liquid that sticks to sensors of these opioids.
The part of the brain with the most of these sensors is called the PVT, known to manage feeding. That suggested the appetite for sugar was related to communication between these two brain regions. So, the researchers tracked the activity of cell nerves in these regions as mice ate their usual food. When the animals seemed to be full, the team gave them a dessert of sugary food.
On average, neuronal activity between the brain regions roughly increased four times while mice ate dessert compared with their regular meal. The peak began before eating the sweets, suggesting the pathway determines the appetite for sugar. When the team prevented signals from POMC neurons to the PVT, the mice consumed 4 percent less dessert.
“These cells, which are well known for making us feel satisfied, also send signals that make us want sugar, especially when we are already full,” says Fenselau, “this would explain why animals-humans-over-consume sugar when they’re actually full. The pathway may have developed because sugar is more easily turned into energy than other sources like fats or proteins.”
32. Why did scientists study the signals from POMC neurons?
A. To understand how opioids are made.
B. To study the role of hormones.
C. To see if POMC neurons affect sugar cravings.
D. To learn how brain slices work.
33. What can we learn about PVT?
A. It sticks to glowing liquid.
B. It is controlled by eating behavior.
C. It communicates with opioids.
D. It receives signals from POMC neurons.
34. How did blocking POMC neuron signals affect mice?
A. Dessert consumption would decrease.
B. Mice would prefer sweet food
C. Sugar intake would remain unchanged.
D. Fullness signals would strengthen.
35. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The brain has a specific region for regulating appetite.
B. Sugar cravings are related to brain activity and satisfaction.
C. Opioids in the brain are crucial for regulating appetite.
D. Dessert consumption is determined by hormone levels.

Li Ming was a 17-year-old exchange student from China. With a heart full of dreams and a little bit of nervousness, he flew to the United Kingdom to start a new adventure. He had always imagined what it would be like to walk through the historic streets of England and meet people from different parts of the world. But as soon as he arrived at his new school, he felt a little unsure.
In his new class, Li Ming struggled to start conversations with his British classmates. They spoke so quickly and used words and phrases he didn’t understand. When he tried to join their conversations, he felt shy about his accent and worried that he might say something wrong. He also noticed that British students seemed to value their personal space more than he was used to, which made it even harder for him to find the right moment to start a meaningful talk.
Group work was even harder. During a group project in literature class, Li Ming had trouble explaining his ideas clearly, feeling like his ideas were getting lost in translation. And he started to doubt himself.
Social events outside of class were just as difficult. At a school party, Li Ming watched his classmates laugh, dance, and sing along to the latest pop songs. He felt left out, not knowing the songs or the dance moves. He wanted to join the fun, but the fear of looking silly kept him on the sidelines.
One day, the school announced a talent show. Li Ming, who practiced traditional Chinese kung fu, really wanted to try. While he was hesitating, a group of British students interested in cultural performances invited him to join them. Li Ming agreed.

【答案】24. C 25. B 26. B 27. C

【25题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段“But Peters told me that while most people book a trip with their desired weather in mind, they might experience the exact opposite. “The weather in Iceland is influenced by its location in the North Atlantic, where warm air from the Gulf Stream meets the cold Arctic air, resulting in frequent and dramatic weather changes,” she says, “In a single day, you might encounter sunshine, rain, wind and even snow, regardless of the season.”(但彼得斯告诉我,虽然大多数人预订旅行时会想到想要的天气,但他们可能遇到完全相反的情况。“冰岛的天气受其位于北大西洋的位置影响,来自墨西哥湾暖流的暖空气与寒冷的北极空气相遇,导致频繁且剧烈的天气变化,”她说,“无论季节如何,一天之内你可能会遭遇晴天、降雨、大风,甚至下雪。”)”可知,彼得斯在第三段强调了冰岛天气的不可预测性。
【26题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词后文“The conditions need to be just right: clear skies and strong solar activity(条件必须恰到好处:晴朗的天空和强烈的太阳活动)”可知,后文讲述看极光需要完美条件,说明看到极光无法保证,故划线词意思是“保证”,与Assured意思一致。

【答案】28. B 29. D 30. C 31. A

【答案】32. C 33. D 34. A 35. B

根据上文“After the injured person is stable, try to keep the broken bone still if you have to wait for help. This can reduce pain and protect the bone from more damage.(伤者情况稳定后,如果需要等待救援,请尽量保持骨折部位不动。这样可以减轻疼痛,并防止骨骼进一步受损)”以及后文“Improperly moving broken bones can cause more harm. Splints (夹板) only work for arms and legs, not for bones in the pelvis or the body trunk.(不当地移动骨折的骨头可能会造成更大的伤害。夹板仅适用于手臂和腿部,不适用于骨盆或躯干部位的骨骼)”可知,该段讲解保持骨折部位固定,后文提到不当移动会造成更多伤害,F选项“如果你不懂正确方法,不要尝试复位骨折”符合语境,衔接下文。

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Para 2: After the show, Li Ming noticed some changes happening.

【答案】Para 1:
During their practice, the group was amazed by Li Ming’s Chinese kung fu. They kept cheering loudly as he performed punches, kicks and graceful stances. They asked him to teach them basic moves, and Li Ming patiently demonstrated step by step, using simple English to explain each action’s meaning. When he struggled to express himself clearly, his new friends listened carefully and helped him find the right words. For the first time, Li Ming forgot his shyness and accent, feeling proud to share his culture. Practice became a joyful time where they learned from each other.
Para 2:
After the show, Li Ming noticed some changes happening. Many classmates came up to him, praising his wonderful performance and asking about Chinese kung fu. Some even invited him to join their conversations and hang out after school. During group work, he dared to speak up confidently, and his ideas were well-received. He no longer felt left out; instead, he found a sense of belonging. Li Ming realized that his unique culture was a bridge to connect with others, and courage and sharing could help him fit in easily.
