During the 2021 Shanghai Fashion Week, a young, slim and confident woman with an iron (钢铁) leg drew everyone’s attention. Her name is Niu Yu. She lost her right leg in the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake. She was only 11 years old then.
Niu Yu used to be in the school sports team. She loved running. But the disaster broke her dream. She had to live with an artificial leg (假肢). It wasn’t comfortable, and her leg often bled. People’s curious eyes made her even more uncomfortable. She always tried to hide her leg under jeans or dresses.
With the support of her family and friends, Niu Yu slowly came out of the shadows. In 2018, right before her 21st birthday, she decided to stop hiding her leg. To her surprise, she received lots of encouraging words. She also finished a half marathon in about 4 hours. She completed the hard 10-year journey of finding herself again.
Now Niu Yu shares her story on social media. She listens to disaster survivors (幸存者) and encourages them to look forward. In 2023, she carried the torch at the FISU World University Games. “It is a great honour for me,” she said. “But it is also a good chance to show people the power of being brave.”
A disaster can bring wounds and pain. But we should always face them with courage. As the writer Nora Ephron said: “Above all, be the hero of your life, not the victim (受害者).”
38. What happened to Niu Yu in 2008?
A. She joined the school sports team. B. She lost her leg in the Wenchuan earthquake.
C. She lived with an artificial iron leg. D. She attended 2021 Shanghai Fashion Week.

A. She was very shy. B. Her artificial leg often hurt and bled.
C. Her right leg looked strange. D. She felt uncomfortable with others’ eyes.
40. What does the underlined word “came out of the shadows” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Hated others’ strange look. B. Walked out of dark rooms.

根据第一段中的“She lost her right leg in the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake.”
根据第二段中的“People’s curious eyes made her even more uncomfortable. She always tried to hide her leg under jeans or dresses.”
根据第三段划线短语后的“she decided to stop hiding her leg…She also finished a half marathon…” 因此“came out of the shadows”意为“振作起来,勇敢面对生活(Cheered up and faced life bravely)”。
根据文章内容梳理时间线: ②决定不再隐藏假肢(根据第三段“In 2018, right before her 21st birthday, she decided to stop hiding her leg.”); ①完成半程马拉松(根据第三段“She also finished a half marathon in about 4 hours.”,发生在决定不再隐藏假肢之后); ③出现在上海时装周(根据第一段“During the 2021 Shanghai Fashion Week, a young, slim and confident woman with an iron (钢铁) leg drew everyone’s attention.”); ④在大运会上担任火炬手(根据第四段“In 2023, she carried the torch at the FISU World University Games.”)。
