depended on“依靠”,turned into“变成”,got into“陷入”,词义不符。

Last week, three students in Grade 8 met some difficulties but solved them with courage.
Lily loves painting. She spent two weeks working on a poster for the school art show. One afternoon, she accidentally knocked over a cup of water, and the poster got wet. The colours ran, and she almost cried. Her deskmate Leo saw this and said, “Let’s try to fix it. Maybe we can turn the water mark into a cloud.” They added some white paint, and the poster looked even more special. Finally, it won the first prize.
Tony joined the school’s running team. In his first race, he fell down and hurt his knee. He wanted to give up, but his coach told him, “Pain is temporary, but pride in trying lasts forever.” Tony stood up and finished the race. Though he didn’t win, his classmates cheered loudly for him.
Anna was nervous about her first English speech. She practised every day but still forgot lines when standing on the stage. Suddenly, she remembered her teacher’s words: “Take a deep breath and smile.” She did that, and then the words came back to her. Everyone clapped when she finished.

Pop Mart toys are becoming more and more popular, not only among children but also among adults. Peter’s mum, Lisa, a 30-year-old woman, is a big fan of Pop Mart’s LABUBU toy. She says the toy helps her relax. Pop Mart now has over 530 stores worldwide, and in 2024, it made more than 13.2 billion yuan in sales.

Many people love traveling to different countries, but if you plan to go abroad, you should know how to behave in different situations around the world.
It’s great to meet new people during a trip, but sometimes you can be impolite without saying anything. In Russia, you should never shake hands in a doorway, and if you’re traveling in Thailand, never touch people’s heads or point your feet at people.
In most countries in Europe, people expect a lot of eye contact (接触) when you talk to them, but in many Asian countries a lot of eye contact seems unfriendly. And in South America, people usually stand quite close to each other when they talk, but in countries like the USA you need to give people more personal space. Also, it’s impolite to interrupt Japanese people while they are talking to you. You must wait until they finish talking before you start speaking.
When you eat in China, it’s impolite to talk with your mouth full. Remember to eat with your right hand in India. Also avoid leaving empty bottles on the dinner table in Russia—that’s bad luck.
When you’re traveling in some Asian countries, if someone invites you to his or her home, don’t forget to take off your shoes when you arrive. And if you visit an Arab family’s home, don’t admire anything valuable because your host will feel he should give it to you as a gift.
36. What is considered impolite in the USA?
A. Shaking hands with others in the doorway.
B. Standing too close to someone when talking.
C. Wearing shoes when visiting a friend’s home.
D. Having eye contact when talking with someone.
37. What does the underlined word “interrupt” probably mean?
A. Follow. B. Help. C. Touch. D. Stop.
38. What does the writer want to tell us?
A. It’s never too late to learn. B. There’s no place like home.
C. Actions speak louder than words. D. When in Rome, do as the Romans do.
39. Which of the following is the best structure of the passage?( Paragraph 1=①, Paragraph 2=②,…)
A. B. C. D.
40. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Cultural Differences B. Body Language
C. Public Rules D. Traveling Plans
B 37. D 38. D 39. C 40. A
第三段第二句“in countries like the USA you need to give people more personal space.”,说明在美国与人交谈时需要保持一定的个人空间,站得太近是不礼貌的。
第三段最后两句“it’s impolite to interrupt Japanese people while they are talking to you. You must wait until they finish talking before you start speaking.”,说明在别人说话时插入进去是不礼貌的,应当等对方说完。

Lily loves painting. She spent two weeks working on a poster for the school art show. One afternoon, she accidentally knocked over a cup of water, and the poster got wet.

One reason why Pop Mart is so popular is the trend (时尚) of “big kids”. Many people from Gen Z (who were born between 1997 and 2012) enjoy doing things that remind (使想起) them of childhood. Another reason is the excitement of “blind boxes”. A blind box is a small box with a mystery toy inside. You don’t know which one you will get until you open it. This surprise makes people want to buy more. Amanda Lee, a 26-year-old from Singapore, opens blind boxes with her coworkers during lunch breaks. She says it’s a fun way to relax and share feelings with others.
Pop Mart’s success shows that people enjoy things that bring joy and emotional connection. The toys are more than just fun—they are a way for people to show themselves and feel young again.
