根据Requirements 部分中“Entries must be original, unpublished and written entirely in English(参赛作品必须是原创的、未曾发表过的,并且必须全部用英语撰写。)” C选项“A 900-word short story created by the applicant.(申请人创作的一篇 900 字的短篇小说。)” 根据文中Rules at a glance部分中“Entries are judged anonymously; do NOT write your name on the pages of the text Need inspiration? Download the free writing prompts pack when you start the form.(参赛作品将进行匿名评审;请勿在文本页面上填写您的姓名。需要灵感吗?在填写表格时,请下载免费的写作提示包。)”可知,如果需要灵感,可以在开始填写表格时下载免费的写作提示包,即从互联网上获取写作提示和灵感。故选C项。 B 【答案】4. B 5. C 6. A 7. 根据第一段“The 2020 Paralympic Games, held from August 24 to September 5, 2021, saw a record 4,403 athletes compete across 22 sports. Among them was Ibrahim Hamadtou — a man whose courage and determination redefine what is possible.(2020年残奥会于2021年8月24日至9月5日举行,共有创纪录的4403名运动员参加了22个项目的比赛。Ibrahim hamadtou就是其中之一,他的勇气和决心重新定义了什么是可能的。)”可知,作者在第1段打算介绍故事的主要人物。故选B。 【5题详解】细节理解题。根据第三段中“They disagreed on a point. When I counted the point in favor of one of them, the other player told me, ‘Do not get involved as you will never be able to play.’ It was that statement that fired me up to decide to play table tennis.(他们在一点上意见不一致。当我数到其中一名球员得分时,另一名球员告诉我,“不要参与其中,因为你永远无法比赛。”正是这句话激发了我打乒乓球的决心。)”可知,他因为帮了一个朋友,另一个朋友说他不能打乒乓球,因而无礼要求他不要参与争论,这使得他下定决心要去打乒乓球。故选C。 【6题详解】词句猜测题。根据划线词后的“I was trying first to use the bat under the arm, and I also tried using other things that weren’t working so well. Finally, I tried using my mouth.(我首先试着把球拍夹在胳膊下,我还试着用其他不太好用的东西。最后,我试着用嘴(来握拍/击球)。)”可知,划线词所在的句子表示“最大的挑战在于摸索出操控身体的最佳方式”,因此可以推出maneuver意为“操纵,利用”。故选A。 根据最后一段中“Disability does not mean having no arms or legs — it means giving up on what you want to achieve.(残疾并不意味着没有胳膊或腿——它意味着放弃你想要实现的目标。)” A 9. D 10. C 11. 根据第一段“For three hot days in August 2023, at one of the biggest music festivals in the Netherlands, a line of people snaked outside the entrance of four shipping containers. They were queuing up to meet some mosquitoes.(在2023年8月的三个炎热的日子里,在荷兰最大的音乐节之一上,一队人蜿蜒在四个集装箱的入口外。他们在排队等着接触一些蚊子)”和第二段中“The shipping containers were a pop-up laboratory, and the people were volunteering for a study that measured how attractive they were to the blood-sucking insects.(集装箱是一个临时实验室,人们自愿参加一项研究,测量他们对蚊子的吸引力)”可知,作者描述了2023年8月在荷兰最大的音乐节之一上,一队人在四个集装箱入口外排队等着接触一些蚊子的场景,目的是引出下文中关于“人类对蚊子的吸引力”的研究。故选A项。 根据第三段中“There’s probably an interplay of different elements at work, like someone’s diet, scent, temperature and the microbial (微生物的) companions living on their skin(这可能是不同因素的interplay,比如某人的饮食、气味、体温以及生活在他们皮肤上的微生物伙伴)”可知,此处列举了影响蚊子选择的不同因素,包括饮食、气味、体温和皮肤上的微生物等。 根据第四段“In the pop-up lab, Hol’s team tested mosquitoes’ responses to volunteers and collected a lot of other data, including information about their cleanliness, diet, and alcohol use, sleeping habits and sunscreen application. The team tested over 500 volunteers and observed a wide range of mosquito responses .After some people placed their arm against the cage, the insects zipped away to the sugar feeder on the opposite side. Other participants had mosquitoes targeting them within seconds.(在临时搭建的实验室里,霍尔团队测试了蚊子对志愿者的反应,并收集了大量其他数据,包括个人清洁状况、饮食习惯、酒精摄入量、睡眠习惯及防晒用品使用情况。 通读全文,尤其是第二段中“The shipping containers were a pop-up laboratory, and the people were volunteering for a study that measured how attractive they were to the blood-sucking insects.(集装箱是一个临时实验室,人们自愿参加一项研究,测量他们对蚊子的吸引力)”和最后一段中“Overall, the team’s results suggest that if you don’t want to get bitten by mosquitoes, “don’t drink beer and put on your sunscreen,” Hol says.(霍尔说,总体而言,研究小组的结果表明,如果你不想被蚊子叮咬,“就不要喝啤酒,涂上防晒霜。”)” 故选A项。 D 【答案】12. D 13. A 14. D 15. A 【导语】。 根据第一段中“Whistled languages are almost always developed by traditional cultures that live in rough, mountainous regions or in thick forest.(口哨语言几乎都是由生活在崎岖山区或茂密森林里的传统文化群体发展而来)”可知,崎岖的地理环境(地理障碍)是吹口哨语言产生的根本原因。 根据第二段中“But whistling mainly works for nontonal languages, where the pitch (音高) of speech sounds isn’t crucial to the meaning of the word.(但吹口哨主要适用于非声调语言,在这类语言中,语音的音高对单词含义并不重要)”可知,非声调语言中,音高与单词含义无关。故选A。 根据第三段中“When researchers tested people’s comprehension of whistled Turkish, they found that experienced listeners correctly identified isolated words about 70 percent of the time; for words in common whistled sentences, with the help of the context, the accuracy rose to about 80 to 90 percent.(当研究人员测试人们对吹口哨的土耳其语的理解能力时,他们发现,有经验的听众在大约70%的时间里正确识别出孤立的单词;对于常见的口哨句子中的单词,在上下文的帮助下,准确率上升到80%到90%左右)”可知,人们对口哨语言的理解能力较高,这超出了研究人员的预测。 故选A。 16. Smartphones, social media, and unplanned interruptions take up useful hours.(分散你注意力的事物是现代时间最大的敌人。 指出了分散注意力的事物对时间的消耗;G选项“To fight them, you must set clear limits on these distractions.(为了对抗它们,你必须对这些干扰设定明确的限制。)” 【19题详解】下文“Working too much leads to tiredness, while too much free time wastes potential. The key is to alternate regularly: work in focused short periods, then take short breaks to get energy back.(工作太多会导致疲劳,而太多的空闲时间会浪费潜力。 强调了工作与休息之间的平衡;A选项“Balance is also important in time management.(在时间管理中,平衡也很重要。)” 故选A。 【20题详解】上文“In essence, time management is not about controlling time itself.(本质上,时间管理不是控制时间本身。)”否定了时间管理是控制时间本身观点;E选项“Instead, it’s about mastering how we use our own hours.(相反,它是关于掌握我们如何利用自己的时间。)” 21 B 22. B The 2020 Paralympic Games, held from August 24 to September 5, 2021, saw a record 4,403 athletes compete across 22 sports. Among them was Ibrahim Hamadtou — a man whose courage and determination redefine what is possible. Table tennis might seem an unlikely choice for someone with no arms, but the 48-year-old Egyptian Paralympian sees no limits. He holds the racket in his mouth and uses his foot to serve, turning what could be a limitation into an extraordinary skill. Hamadtou, who lost his arms in a train accident at the age of ten, was drawn to table tennis after being in a club with his friends. “I was in the club where two of my friends were playing a match.” Hamadtou explains. “They disagreed on a point. When I counted the point in favor of one of them, the other player told me, ‘Do not get involved as you will never be able to play.’ It was that statement that fired me up to decide to play table tennis.” It took Hamadtou three years to master the sport. He says the biggest challenge was figuring out the best way to maneuver his body. “I was trying first to use the bat under the arm, and I also tried using other things that weren’t working so well. Finally, I tried using my mouth. It took me nearly a year of practice to get used to holding the racket with my mouth and making the serve; with practice and playing regularly, this skill was improved.” His talent gained recognition when he was named Best Arab Athlete in 2014. He went on to win a silver medal at the 2016 African Championships and competed in both the 2016 and 2020 Paralympic Games. As Hamadtou says, “Disability does not mean having no arms or legs—it means giving up on what you want to achieve.” 4.What does the author intend to do in paragraph 1? A. To describe Ibrahim Hamadtou’s life story. B. To introduce the main character of the story. C. To popularize the spirit of Paralympic games. D. To provide backgrounds of the participating athletes. 5. What motivated Hamadtou to play table tennis? A. A train accident. B. His personal interest. C. A friend’s challenge. D. His family’s encouragement. 6. What does the underlined word “maneuver” in paragraph 4 mean? A. Make use of. B. Take care of. C. Put up with. D. Take pity on. 7. What does Hamadtou define true disability as? A. A failure to gain formal recognition. B. A physical challenge to overcome. C. The refusal to pursue one’s dream. D. The lack of personal achievements. C For three hot days in August 2023, at one of the biggest music festivals in the Netherlands, a line of people snaked outside the entrance of four shipping containers. They were queuing up to meet some mosquitoes. The shipping containers were a pop-up laboratory, and the people were volunteering for a study that measured how attractive they were to the blood-sucking insects. Festival-goers rested their arms against acrylic boxes (亚克力盒子) that let caged mosquitoes smell but not bite. A camera helped track the insects’ landings, and then a computer calculated a score. Felix Hol, a quantitative biologist at Radboud University Medical Center in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, directed the study. There’s probably an interplay of different elements at work, like someone’s diet, scent, temperature and the microbial (微生物的) companions living on their skin, Hol says. In the pop-up lab, Hol’s team tested mosquitoes’ responses to volunteers and collected a lot of other data, including information about their cleanliness, diet, and alcohol use, sleeping habits and sunscreen application. The team tested over 500 volunteers and observed a wide range of mosquito responses. After some people placed their arm against the cage, the insects zipped away to the sugar feeder on the opposite side. Other participants had mosquitoes targeting them within seconds. Such extra-attractive humans may have been beer drinkers. People who recently drank beer were 44 percent more attractive to mosquitoes than people who didn’t. Among people who had showered recently, those who had applied sunscreen were about half as attractive as those who had not, the team found. Overall, the team’s results suggest that if you don’t want to get bitten by mosquitoes, “don’t drink beer and put on your sunscreen,” Hol says. If that advice doesn’t sound appealing, he says, there is an alternative: “You can do whatever you want and put on long sleeves.” 8. What is the primary function of the first paragraph? A. To introduce the research. B. To highlight the challenges. C. To detail the scientific ways. D. To assess the volunteers’ motivations. 9. What does the underlined word “interplay” in Paragraph 3 most likely mean? A. Random combination. B. Unexpected result. C. Single effect. D. Interaction. 10. What can be inferred about the role of the sugar feeder in Paragraph 4? A. Its effect has nothing to do with the volunteers’ gender. B. It was the food source for mosquitoes in the experiment. C. It helped compare how much humans attracted mosquitoes. D. It tested mosquito preferences by creating a nature-like environment. 11. What is the main purpose of the passage? A. To report factors in human attractiveness to mosquitoes. B. To prove sunscreen is an effective preventer. C. To promote music festivals as research sites. D. To explain why beer attracts mosquitoes. D Tourists visiting La Gomera and El Hierro in the Canary Islands can often hear locals communicating over long distances by whistling—not a tune, but the Spanish language called Silbo. Whistled languages are almost always developed by traditional cultures that live in rough, mountainous regions or in thick forest. Skilled whistlers can reach 120 decibels (分贝). As a result, whistled speech can be understood up to 10 times as far away as ordinary shouting can, experts have found. But whistling mainly works for nontonal languages, where the pitch (音高) of speech sounds isn’t crucial to the meaning of the word. English, Spanish and most other European languages are nontonal languages. For tonal languages, in contrast, the meaning of a sound depends on its pitch relative to the rest of the sentence. In Chinese, for example, “ma” said with a steady high pitch means “mother,” but said with a pitch that dips and rises again, it means “horse.” The whistled version of speech doesn’t contain as much frequency information as ordinary spoken language, but it does carry enough to recognize words. When researchers tested people’s comprehension of whistled Turkish, they found that experienced listeners correctly identified isolated words about 70 percent of the time; for words in common whistled sentences, with the help of the context, the accuracy rose to about 80 to 90 percent. Linguists know surprisingly few details about how the brain does this. The information crucial for understanding speech must lie somewhere within that whistled signal. Whistled languages excite language experts for another reason, too. They share many features with what experts think the first languages must have been like, when speech and language first appeared during the dawn of modern humans. One of the big challenges of language is the need to control the vocal cords (声带) to make the full range of speech sounds. None of our closest relatives, the great apes, have developed such control—but whistling may be a simpler first step. 12. What was the root reason for the birth of whistled languages? A.
