We are excited to show this student-led project report from our school Drama Festival last term! It is a great example of how PBL (project-based learning) helps students improve.
Last term, I led a team to organize a drama show. This report explains the steps we took, the problems we faced, and what we have learned.
Step 1: Forming the Team
To start with, I invited classmates with different skills like writing, acting, directing, and designing. We talked about what everyone could do and decided our roles.
Step 2: Writing the Play
Our writers started by creating a story. But it was too long and boring, so we cut some parts, added something exciting, and improved the conversations with our teachers’ help. Their advice really worked well.
Step 3: Making Tools and Practicing
The design team made the stage tools and special clothes for the show. The actors practiced their lines (台词) and movements. Some parents also helped with the set and clothes, which was really nice.
Step 4: Showing and Reviewing
Finally, we showed the drama successfully. After the show, we talked about what we could improve for the next time.
Conclusion

Walking through a forest of ashes (灰烬) is a heartbreaking experience for anyone who loves nature. For Marta Bernardino and Sebastião Mendonça, the sight of Portugal’s (葡萄牙的) burning woods was a call to take action. Their beautiful country has been getting hotter and drier for years. Nearly half of Portugal’s forests have been burned down by huge wildfires since 2000. Most of these areas are on steep slopes (陡坡). This makes it almost impossible for people to climb up and replant trees safely.
Determined to help, these two 19-year-old friends turned to technology for a solution. In 2023, while still in high school, they started building Trovador, a tree-planting robot. Their first prototype (原型) was built using recycled materials and cost just $17. Even with such a small cost, the robot was a huge success. It could plant saplings (树苗) 28% faster than humans, and nine out of ten of the trees it planted survived.
Today, Trovador is being developed into a high-tech machine shaped like a dog. The teenagers received $10,000 from National Geographic to improve their design. They are now working hard to make the robot even better. The new model is being built with lightweight materials so it won’t hurt the soil weakened by fires. It will also be equipped with cameras and sensors (传感器). These tools will help it climb safely over steep hills.
The best part is how smart the robot is becoming. It will use artificial intelligence (AI) to check soil conditions and find the best places for planting. With a GPS system, it will be able to plant up to 200 trees in just one hour. What’s more, people will even be able to use an app to help regrow a forest. They can simply pick an area on the map and let Trovador do the rest. Trovador is expected to be ready by late 2026. Thanks to this clever invention, Portugal’s hills may soon be green again, one tree at a time.
34. Why is it difficult for people to replant trees in Portugal’s burned forests?
A. Most of the burnt areas are located on very steep hills.
B. The weather there is getting too cold for saplings to grow.
C. There are no more seeds or tools left after the huge wildfires.
D. People are not allowed to enter the forests for safety reasons.
35. What did Trovador’s first prototype achieve?
A. The recycled parts and creative look.
B. The high working speed and tree survival level.
C. The high technology and dog-like shape.
D. The low price and its ability to avoid rocks.
36. Why did the teenagers use lightweight materials for the new robot dog?
A. To save money. B. To allow the robot to move easily.
C. To reduce the pressure on the weak soil. D. To leave more space for cameras and sensors.
37. What will the AI in Trovador be used for?
A. To carry more saplings on steep hills. B. To fix the broken cameras and sensors.
C. To check soil and find good planting places. D. To control the app on our phones.
38. What is the best title for the passage?
A. How to Plant Trees on Steep Slopes B. High-tech Tools to Stop Forest Fires
C. Terrible Wildfires in Portugal’s Forests D. Two Teenagers Build a Tree-Planting Robot
【答案】34. A 35. B 36. C 37. C 38. D

There are a number of animals that glow (发光) in some way — including several kinds of insects and fish. Some kinds of mushrooms (蘑菇) glow, too. But plants don’t glow. Now, scientists are working to change that and trying to make plants glow.
When a living thing gives off a glow, it’s called bioluminescence (生物发光). Fireflies are a well-known example of bioluminescence. Though less well-known, many mushrooms are also bioluminescent.
Fireflies and other bioluminescent creatures light up thanks to chemicals inside their bodies. These chemicals are known as luciferins (荧光素). Plants don’t naturally have luciferins, so there are no naturally bioluminescent plants. But that hasn’t stopped scientists from trying to create them.
In the past, scientists have created glowing plants by adding DNA from the glowing bacteria (细菌). But the glowing effect was weak, probably because of the huge differences between simple bacteria and plants. Scientists have also created glowing plants by adding luciferins to plants. But it only works as long as the chemicals last. In 2017, a team at MIT was able to cause plants to glow for about four hours.
Now, researchers have come up with a new method of creating glowing plants which lasts as long as the plant is alive. Though mushrooms and plants grow very differently, the scientists focused on an acid (酸) that is found in both of them. By adding certain parts of the DNA from glowing mushrooms to plants, the scientists were able to create plants that could make their own luciferins using this acid.
The glowing came from all parts of the plant. The scientists report that the greenish light was about 10 times brighter than in earlier glowing plants. The glow was strong enough to be easily recorded with a common camera, but it didn’t influence the health of the plants.
39. Which writing method is used in paragraph 2?
A. By giving examples. B. By listing numbers.
C. By asking questions. D. By making comparisons.
40. What does the underlined word “them” refer to in paragraph 3?
A. Luciferins. B. Glowing plants.
C. Special mushrooms. D. Bioluminescent animals.
41. What was the weakness of the glowing plants made from glowing bacteria’s DNA?
A. Their light was too weak. B. The chemicals ran out quickly.
C. They only glowed for four hours. D. They were bad for plants’ health.
42. What’s the key of the new glowing plant technology in paragraph 5?
A. Taking luciferins directly from fireflies.
B. Feeding plants with special chemicals.

阅读短文,从短文下面的六个选项中选择五个还原到短文中,使短文通顺完整、衔接自然。
The sun is the world’s most powerful energy source. The huge fiery ball gives off more power than people could ever use.
Solar cells (太阳能电池) are used to collect the sun’s energy. ___44___. There are thousands of solar cells on a solar panel (太阳能电池板). A few of these solar panels can produce enough electricity for a house.
___45___. For one thing, it is clean. It does not produce any air pollution. Fossil fuels like coal or oil are dirty to burn. They give off gases that are harmful to breathe. Air pollution from fossil fuels may even make our climate too warm.
Solar power is cheaper than fossil fuels in some ways. Air pollution from fossil fuels (化石燃料) causes serious damage. People get sick because of the dirty air. Gases from burning oil also hurt plants, animals and buildings. ___46___. However, solar power would save billions of dollars in these “hidden” costs for us.
There are still some problems with solar power, though. Solar cells work only on sunny days. At night or in cloudy weather, people need another power source. ___47___. They are very large. Many large solar panels are needed to make enough electricity. It would be hard to find some large places for them all.
Solar cells are not that efficient yet, either. They do not use all the sunlight that hits them. Only 20% of the light can be turned into power. ___48___. People need to invent more efficient cells that can make full use of sunlight. Then the cost of solar energy will fall.
A. The rest of the energy is wasted.
B. Solar power has many advantages
C. Solar panels also have space problems
D. Then each solar cell changes the sunlight into electricity
E. It costs lots of money to put solar panels on every house
F. This pollution costs governments huge money on medical care and environmental repairs

On 25 September 2017, the scientific world was shaken by the news that Chinese professor Zhong Yang had died in a car accident. The well-respected biologist had spent his whole life researching plants and seeds. Over the years, he collected many important seeds for China’s seed banks. These special banks protect all kinds of plant seeds, including the ones we need for food, and they make sure that important plants do not disappear from the world forever.
Zhong Yang was born in 1964. When he was young, he showed a deep love and curiosity for the things he studied. He was an excellent student, entering university at the early age of 15. There, he studied radio engineering and later became interested in plants. The research and study of plants, especially the seeds, became the focus of his life after he became a professor at Fudan University.
It is important for seed banks to include many different kinds of seeds. When Zhong Yang discovered that there was not enough research on the seeds from Xizang, he went there to collect seeds himself. In 2001, he began his travels across Xizang. It was very difficult for him to brave the cold weather and great heights. He sometimes fell sick, but he always continued with his work.
Zhong Yang knew it was better to include more people when doing important work. He began a programme to find and train local students in field research to become scientists. Together, he and his team collected more than 40 million seeds from around 1,000 plants. Their hard work provided the world with lots of new information about the plants in China.
Zhong Yang left behind more than just a huge collection of seeds. His love for his job and research lives on in his students. He once said, “My students will continue on the road of scientific exploration and the seeds we have collected may grow hundreds of years from now.”

【答案】例文
Now there is a hot discussion in our school. Some students want to drive the birds away, but the headmaster has different ideas.
I fully agree with the headmaster. First, birds are lovely wild animals and part of nature. Their beautiful songs bring us peace instead of trouble. Besides, they eat harmful insects and keep our campus green.
Once I watched a little bird build its nest in a tree near our classroom. I felt warm and relaxed when hearing its soft songs. To live in peace with birds, we can plant more trees for them and put out clean water every morning. We should never hurt them.
A campus with birds is a warmer and nicer place.

C. Mixing DNA of fireflies and mushrooms together.
D. Using a shared acid to let plants make luciferins.
43. What is the main idea of the text?
A. To show glowing animals and plants. B. To explain how bioluminescence works.
C. To introduce the glowing plant research. D. To compare different types of glowing plants.
