A. being told; was cancelled B. to be told; had cancelled

Want to read a perfect children’s book? Explore some recommendations from trusted critics.
My Brother Is Away (Sara Greenwood, illustrated by Luisa Uribe)
It’s never easy to explain that a family member is kept in prison, and it can be especially hard for children. This touching book draws on the author’s own childhood to tell the story of a young girl whose brother is in prison. What does she say to her friends who have seen him on the news? And will he still love her? A gentle and hopeful story for kids about very adult situations and complex feelings. (For ages 5 to 8)
Eyes that Kiss in the Corners (Joanna Ho, illustrated by Dung Ho)
This book is brilliantly written because it focuses both on how the characters’ eyes look and on how they see. Focusing on a young girl who takes pride in her “eyes that kiss in the corner and glow like warm tea”, Joanna Ho’s lyrical intergenerational story combines with Dung Ho’s warm and often magical imagery to bring us a celebration on how we see the world — and how we see ourselves. (For ages 4 to 8)
Rez Dogs (Joseph Bruchac)
When COVID-19 hits, Malian is visiting her grandparents. It is in Malian’s grandparents’ stories that she learns how the people of her native community have always taken care of one another. Written in poetry, this book shows us the pandemic through a child’s eyes and helps remind us that responsibility and caring for one another is something we all can do. (For ages 8 to 12)
Listen to the Language of the Trees (Tera Kelly, illustrated by Marie Hermansson)
If you know about the “Wood Wide Web”, you know that trees communicate through the fungi that connect their roots. Still, did you know how they support one another with extra food? How they can tell their offspring (后代) apart from other trees? How they can warn other trees when insects attack? Then, consider this outstanding book for kids on the topic. (For ages 4 to 8)

A. Rez Dogs B. Listen to the Language of the Trees

Erin Willman, who lost her vision at fifteen, faced many challenges. People often told her what she could not do, but she wanted to show them what she was able to do. Turned down in job applications because of her blindness, Erin decided to make her own way. Within a year, she set up White Cane Coffee and became its CEO, proving that her disability would not stop her dreams.
White Cane Coffee has grown from an idea on a hard day into a successful business, with its coffee sold in many cities. Besides selling good-quality coffee, the company supports equality by offering jobs to blind and disabled people, teaching them useful skills and building their confidence. The company’s care for inclusion can be seen in its special product labels: each bag has Braille (盲文) on it, making it one of the first companies to do this for all products. This idea comes from Erin’s belief that visually impaired people should be able to shop independently.
The company provides jobs with a good pay, giving freedom and improving the lives of employees who are often unfairly refused such chances in other places. Erin’s team says their purpose is more than money — it brings hope and shows the importance of every worker. The money made by White Cane Coffee not only supports the workers but also helps with guide dog training, children’s community work and raising money for charity groups.
Erin’s goal is more than personal success: she finally wants to make a difference around the world. She cares more about social influence than wealth, hoping to use her position to improve people’s lives. Erin and her team are thankful for the great support from the community and groups that help the disabled. More importantly, they are proud of what they have done to offer resources and courage to disabled people. They hope to create more jobs to help more people live on their own. To reach this goal, they are working on new and exciting plans to help the company develop to a higher level.
31. According to the text, why did Erin start her own coffee company?

根据文章第一段“Turned down in job applications because of her blindness, Erin decided to make her own way. Within a year, she set up White Cane Coffee and became its CEO, proving that her disability would not stop her dreams.(由于视力障碍而被许多工作机会拒绝后,艾琳决定走自己的路。一年之内,她创立了White Cane Coffee,并成为公司首席执行官,证明了她的残疾无法阻挡她的梦想)”可知,她意志坚定;根据第二段“Besides selling good-quality coffee, the company supports equality by offering jobs to blind and disabled people, teaching them useful skills and building their confidence. (除了销售高品质的咖啡,该公司还通过为盲人和残障人士提供工作机会、教授实用技能并增强他们的自信心来支持平等)”及第三段“The company provides jobs with a good pay, giving freedom and improving the lives of employees who are often unfairly refused such chances in other places.(该公司提供薪酬优厚的工作岗位,给予员工自由,并改善了那些在其他地方常被不公平拒绝此类机会的员工的生活)”可推知,她体贴他人、关怀社会。

The human mind is deeply influenced by the collective (集体的): This phenomenon, termed herd mentality, describes the tendency of individuals to adopt the behaviors, beliefs, and attitudes of the groups to which they belong. It shapes our thoughts and decisions, often without conscious awareness. From social media trends to consumer behavior types, herd mentality affects how we think and act. But are we truly independent thinkers; or are we simply following the crowd?
Herd mentality has evolutionary roots. For early humans’ survival depended on group cohesion (凝聚力). Those who stayed with the tribe enjoyed protection and access to resources, while loners faced threats alone. Over generations, this adaptive behavior became a natural part of life. Today, while the physical dangers of being alone have decreased, the psychological pull of the group remains powerful.
Human beings are naturally social creatures, driven by a fundamental need for acceptance and a sense of belonging. Our identities are often tied to the groups we belong to. Furthermore, the fear of being refused by others pushes us to follow the crowd, even if we have to give up our own beliefs. This social pressure is made stronger by cognitive biases (认知偏见) that affect our judgment, making people trust the opinion of the majority without thinking carefully. When people are repeatedly exposed to the same information, they are more likely to believe it. Social media makes these biases even worse, as it popularizes trending content instead of spreading the truth. This creates echo chambers (回音室效应) where people’s existing beliefs are strengthened rather than questioned.
In certain circumstances, herd mentality can have positive effects, especially in situations where individuals have limited information or expert knowledge. Following the majority can lead to better outcomes, as the collective knowledge of the group goes beyond that of any single person. However, excessive herd mentality poses risks, including limiting independent thoughts, harming creativity, and causing the spread of misinformation. Therefore, developing critical thinking — questioning assumptions, evaluating sources, and exploring diverse perspectives — is essential for both personal independence and collective progress.
36. Which behavior best demonstrates herd mentality?
A. Accepting expert advice in complicated situations.
B. Improving a solution with individual creativity.
C. Following others’ ideas after careful evaluation.
D. Supporting group opinions to fit in with others.
37. Why did early humans develop herd mentality?
A. To enhance their social status.
B. To increase their chances of survival.
C. To strengthen their hunting skills.
D. To meet their emotional needs.
38. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The link between group pressure and self-identity.
B. The effect of herd mentality on human minds.
C. The factors contributing to herd mentality.
D. The role of social media in shaping personal beliefs.
39. Which statement will the author probably agree with?
A. Herd mentality is inevitable in highly connected societies.
B. It is important to maintain critical thinking in a trend-following society.
C. Misinformation can lead individuals to rely on collective opinions.
D. True independence is achieved by rejecting diverse perspectives.
40. What is the author’s main purpose in writing this text?
A. To explain the history of human social evolution.
B. To analyze the causes and effects of herd mentality and encourage critical thinking.
C. To compare the differences between individual and group thinking.
D. To argue that human beings are naturally weak and should be dependent.
D 37. B 38. B 39. B 40. B
根据第一段“The human mind is deeply influenced by the collective (集体的): This phenomenon, termed herd mentality, describes the tendency of individuals to adopt the behaviors, beliefs, and attitudes of the groups to which they belong.(人类的思维深受集体影响:这种现象被称为从众心理,指的是个体倾向于采纳所属群体的行为、信念和态度)”以及第三段“Furthermore, the fear of being refused by others pushes us to follow the crowd, even if we have to give up our own beliefs.(此外,害怕被他人拒绝会驱使我们随波逐流,即使这意味着我们必须放弃自己的信念)”可知,从众心理的核心特征是为了融入群体而支持群体观点,而非基于独立思考。 Supporting group opinions to fit in with others(支持群体观点以融入他人)最符合这一描述。
根据第二段“Herd mentality has evolutionary roots. For early humans’ survival depended on group cohesion (凝聚力). Those who stayed with the tribe enjoyed protection and access to resources, while loners faced threats alone. (从众心理有进化根源。因为早期人类的生存依赖于群体凝聚力。留在部落的人享有保护和资源获取,而孤独者独自面对威胁)”可推知,早期人类发展从众心理是为了提高生存几率。
【38题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段“In certain circumstances, herd mentality can have positive effects, especially in situations where individuals have limited information or expert knowledge. Following the majority can lead to better outcomes, as the collective knowledge of the group goes beyond that of any single person. However, excessive herd mentality poses risks, including limiting independent thoughts, harming creativity, and causing the spread of misinformation. Therefore, developing critical thinking — questioning assumptions, evaluating sources, and exploring diverse perspectives — is essential for both personal independence and collective progress.(在某些情况下,从众心理可以产生积极的影响,特别是在个人信息或专业知识有限的情况下。
根据第四段“Therefore, developing critical thinking — questioning assumptions, evaluating sources, and exploring diverse perspectives — is essential for both personal independence and collective progress.(因此,培养批判性思维——质疑假设、评估信息来源并探索多元视角——对于个人独立性和集体进步都至关重要)”可推知,作者认为在追随潮流的社会中保持批判性思维非常重要。

Samantha, my childhood playmate living in Florida, had to deal with some complex problems in her life. Her mother recognized the difficulty she was having and understood that things would be much better if I could come and visit and spend a couple of days helping her sort things out. So her mother purchased the tickets for me to fly down and see her.
I flew out from Boston in a thunderstorm and it was rainy and thundering most of the way to Charlotte, North Carolina. When I arrived in Charlotte, the flight had been delayed so much that there were no additional flights going out for the rest of the night. I became very grieved and burst into tears.
It only took a minute or two before I felt an arm being put around my shoulders from behind. It was a woman that I had flown into Charlotte on the same flight with and she said, “Don’t worry, young girl. You’re with us now.”
I cried harder when she said that, because I immediately felt less alone. Deb and Mark were heading to Orlando with their two teenage daughters. We all sat down and started chatting. They treated me immediately as though I was a family member. During the night, I curled up (蜷作一团) with my bag and slept while this family watched over me.
In the morning, we were informed that there was a flight to Orlando. That flight had four seats, enough for Deb, Mark, and their daughters. But Deb and Mark declared that they would not be taking that flight to Orlando because I was part of their family for the day, and they weren’t going to leave part of their family behind.
We flew into Tampa, on the west coast of Florida, and Deb and Mark rented a car and drove to Orlando. My friend’s mother was waiting for me in Orlando when we arrived. When I left the family, there were tears, a lot of hugs, and promises to stay in touch. This family was an inspiration to me, and they remain so every day.

根据文章第二段划线词之前“When I arrived in Charlotte, the flight had been delayed so much that there were no additional flights going out for the rest of the night. I became (当我到达Charlotte的时候,航班已经延误了很多,以至于当晚剩下的时间里都没有额外的航班了。我变得)”以及之后“and burst into tears.(并且大哭起来)”可知,因为天气原因我没有赶上既定的航班,并且当晚也没有额外的航班了,由此可推测作者心情一定非常难过,所以划线词的意思为Sad/Upset,故答案为Sad/Upset。

【55题详解】

【答案】Dear Jim,
More than glad that you’re interested in our school debate. I’m writing to share detailed information with you.
Our school held the wonderful debate last Friday, aiming to help students treat AI properly and form good learning habits. The pro side argued that AI can help finish homework efficiently and solve difficult academic problems instantly, saving lots of study time. However, the con side believed relying on AI blindly would make students lazy and weaken their independent thinking ability.
Personally, I think we should use AI as a helper rather than a substitute. We need to think independently first and turn to AI for assistance when necessary. The meaningful debate has offered us valuable guidance on modern learning.
Yours,
Li Jin

(For ages 4 to 8)
26. Which book is particularly recommended for children who are dealing with family members in difficult situations?
A. Rez Dogs B. Listen to the Language of the Trees
C. My Brother Is Away D. Eyes that Kiss in the Corners
27. What do My Brother Is Away and Eyes that Kiss in the Corners have in common?
A. They both tell stories through a girl’s eyes. B. They both reveal complex feelings.
C. They are intended for children of the same age. D. They both focus on children’s responsibility.
28. What can we learn about the book Rez Dogs?
