Do you know how the marathon (马拉松) got its name? Let me tell you a story behind it. A long time ago, there was a great war between the Greeks (希腊人) and the Persians (波斯人) in a place called Marathon. There were only a few Greeks, but they fought hard. In the end, they won the war.
A Greek called Pheidippides wanted to bring the good news to the people in Athens, a city about 40 km away. So he started running and he ran as fast as he could. He did not stop on the way. He ran over hills and through the fields. Finally, he arrived in Athens. Although he was very tired, he shouted to the people, “We won!” Then he fell to the ground and died. But the good news he brought made the Greek people very happy and excited.
Many years later, when the modern Olympic Games (奥运会) began, people decided to remember Pheidippides. They made a very long running race and called it the “marathon”. The race is about 40 km long—the same distance (距离) Pheidippides ran. In the 1908 London Olympic Games, the marathon was finally made to be 42.195 km.

Do you know how the marathon (马拉松) got its name? Let me tell you a story behind it. A long time ago, there was a great war between the Greeks (希腊人) and the Persians (波斯人) in a place called Marathon. There were only a few Greeks, but they fought hard. In the end, they won the war.
