Eisley looked forward to celebrating her 9th birthday. Her mother, Sarah, planned the party this year earlier after missing the celebration last year because of work. Sarah said her daughter could hardly wait for the big day.
However, on that day, the party space remained empty after half an hour passed. No guests (客人) arrived.
“And I just thought to myself, no way, right?” Sarah said. “Suddenly I realized that I forgot to send the invitation cards to guests!”
The moment was especially painful for the mom, because she really wanted to make the day special for her daughter.
“It’s my mistake. I felt like I failed her,” she said.
Instead of letting the day end in disappointment (失望), Sarah decided to be brave. She turned to social media and asked if anyone in the community (社区) might want to stop by and help celebrate Eisley’s birthday.
What happened next was more than she ever expected.
Within a short time, neighbors began showing up—the restaurant was magically filled with people who wanted to make sure the young girl had a birthday to remember.
The guests didn’t just bring smiles—they brought presents too. Eisley was excited as gifts started piling up (堆起来).
“I got Pokémon cards. I got slime. I got toys,” she said excitedly.
Some neighbors couldn’t come to the party in person but they found ways to send birthday surprises.
The party ended up being better than anyone expected. “I think it went great,” Eisley said with a smile, “maybe a little bit better than great.”
By the end of the day, what could have been a sad memory became something far more meaningful—a reminder (提示) of how powerful kindness and community can be.
24. Why did Sarah plan her daughter’s birthday party earlier this year?
A. She hoped Eisley’s classmates would come to the party.
B. She wanted people to see it on the Internet.
C. She missed the celebration last year.
25. How did Sarah invite people to the party?
A. By sending letters to her friends.
B. By asking for help on social media.
C. By calling her neighbors one by one.
26. What did Eisley think of the party?
A. Disappointing. B. Amazing. C. Relaxing.
27. What does the writer want to tell us?
A. It takes courage to be kind.
B. Happiness springs from being kind.
C. The kindness of a community saves the day.
C
You might meet someone at a hotel breakfast table, on a walking tour, or on a plane. Within hours, you are exploring a city together, sharing meals and life stories. Sometimes these conversations feel more honest (坦诚的) than those with people you have known for years. When the trip ends, it can leave you wondering: was that even a real friendship? The answer is yes—but it may belong to a kind of relationship that happens only within a moment in time.
Travel places people in “liminal space”. In this space, many of the roles that structure daily life temporarily (暂时地) fall away. It means when you are traveling, you are not quite your usual self, nor yet back to your normal routine (惯例). You are not a brother, a sister, or a student; you become simply a traveler—someone exploring new places and experiences. Research suggests that travel can improve well-being and increase openness to new experiences. When people share that sense of discovery, they may also find it easier to connect. Travel changes not just where we are but how we relate to people.
Travel friendships can happen very quickly and feel especially strong. One reason is what experts sometimes describe as situational closeness. When people explore new environments together—choosing transportation or walking through a new city—they experience newness and vulnerability (脆弱) at the same time. Research shows that shared fresh experiences can strengthen emotional bonding by lifting spirits and bringing positive changes to the brain.
Another reason is that people can find it surprisingly easy to open up to someone they may never see again. The temporary nature of it can make emotional honesty feel safer. Actually, the fact that the connection is temporary may be exactly what allows it to feel so meaningful.
Researchers have long recognized the value of “weak ties”—brief or situational relationships that still lead to a sense of connection, and well-being. Travel friendships become part of the emotional landscape of a place: the person you met while getting lost in a new city, the stranger who shared a midnight conversation about life, the group you explored a country with for a few unforgettable days. You may never see them again. But their presence becomes the memory of that journey. Some friendships are not meant to last a lifetime.
28. Why does the writer use the example in Paragraph 1?
A. To introduce an unforgettable travel moment.
B. To describe the feeling of meeting new friends.
C. To present a special kind of social relationship.
29. Which of the following is an example of “situational closeness”?
A. Chatting with a stranger on a tour bus.
B. Sending messages to a friend you met online.
C. Sharing ideas with classmates about a group project.
30. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Opening up to strangers helps form safer travel friendships.
B. Travel friendships bring biological changes to the brain.
C. Travel friendships offer space for emotional honesty.
31. Which of the following does the writer probably agree with?
A. Weak ties have great power.
B. New places awaken old memories.
C. Short trips produce lifelong relationships.
六、阅读表达(共8分,每小题2分)
阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
Nature is full of wonders. From colorful coral reefs to high mountains, our planet is home to over 8 million kinds of plants and animals. Unluckily, our world is in danger. As coral reefs die out and rainforests disappear, what can we do to restore (恢复) the balance of nature? The answer is rewilding.
What is Rewilding?
Rewilding means to restore an area to become wilder or more natural. Often, we just do nothing and let nature run wild. Forests, for example, can regrow on their own if we simply leave the land alone. Sometimes, however, we can also help nature by bringing back plants or animals that used to live there.
How Can Rewilding Help Nature?
Rewilding can help to restore ecosystems (生态系统). As nature is restored, animals come back. In the United Kingdom, for example, a rewilding project at Knepp Castle Estate (KCE) turned a piece of wasted farmland into a healthy ecosystem. Today, the wild land is home to many different kinds of animals, including animals in danger.
Rewilding can have a positive effect on climate change, too. Trees, for example, take away carbon from the air by drawing it in and storing it as they grow. They are natural carbon sinks that take in more carbon than they let out. Carbon that stays in the air locks in heat and leads to global warming.
Yet, rewilding projects need to be planned carefully, because different communities have different needs. Food production, for example, is important to feed the growing number of people in the world. So, rich land may be best kept for farming and not for rewilding. It is also important to involve (使参与) local or native communities in the discussion so that they are not pushed out of their lands.
How Can We Get Involved?
Anyone can help to rewild the world—even you! If you have a backyard in your home, you can provide a home for wildlife by letting small parts of it go wild. Planting flowers also supports pollinators (授粉者) like bees and butterflies. They help to make the food that we eat. Insects are highly important to our ecosystems, even though we may not like them!
When we share our space with nature, we learn to live as a part of nature and not apart from it.
32. What does rewilding mean?
______________________________________________________________________________________
33. What did the rewilding project at KCE do?
______________________________________________________________________________________
34. Why do rewilding projects need to be planned carefully?
______________________________________________________________________________________
35. Your community is having a “Rewilding Day”. What rewilding activity would you suggest? Why?

段末“but it may belong to a kind of relationship that happens only within a moment in time.”明确指出这是一种“发生在特定时刻的关系”,因此举例的目的是为了引出这种特殊的社会关系,而非仅仅描述感觉或某个时刻。
【29题详解】
第三段“When people explore new environments together—choosing transportation or walking through a new city—they experience newness and vulnerability (脆弱) at the same time.”
最后一段“Researchers have long recognized the value of “weak ties”—brief or situational relationships that still lead to a sense of connection, and well-being.”明确提到研究人员认可“weak ties”(弱连接)的价值,它们能带来连接感和幸福感,说明作者同意其具有巨大力量。
Why?
______________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】32. It means to restore an area to become wilder or more natural.
33. It turned a piece of wasted farmland into a healthy ecosystem.
34. Because different communities have different needs.
35. I would suggest planting flowers. Because it supports pollinators like bees and butterflies.
