The goal of World Book Day is to encourage people to enjoy reading. There is no doubt that the ending of a book is usually a big part of that joy. However, there are still many stories that do not finish happily. What do you think? Should books always have a happy ending?
Part of the reason we read is that reading makes us happy. We read to get away from troubles and worries in real life. If your reading experiences are connected to positive feelings, you may be encouraged to keep reading. Of course, this does not mean stories with happy endings cannot make you enjoy reading. They can also include surprises. These surprises make the stories very exciting, even if you know everything will end well.
In real life, the story does not stop at the “happy ending”. Books with unhappy endings are also useful. They show you true feelings, such as sadness, but in a safe way. They can help you deal with these feelings in your own life. The stories talk about the painful side of love and heartbreak. Reading about these things can help us feel that we are not alone in our personal experiences.
Some experts say that experiencing negative feelings can make you better at understanding how other people feel. This ability helps you connect with people and support them through hard times. In the end, it is the “unhappy” endings that can have the greatest influence on us.
24. According to the passage, why do people read in the first place?
A. Because reading makes them happy and helps them forget worries.
B. Because they want to experience negative feelings.
C. Because experts tell them to read more books.
25. What does the underlined word “They” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. True feelings. B. Surprises. C. Books with unhappy endings.
26. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Experiencing negative feelings in books helps us understand other people better.
B. Stories with unhappy endings have bad influence on us.
C. Reading sad stories makes people feel that they are alone.
27. What is the best title for the passage?
A. How to Write a Good Book
B. The History of World Book Day
C. Should Books Always Have a Happy Ending?
A 25. C 26. A 27. C

空前的设问“How can we save ourselves when an earthquake happens?”,此处需要一句承上启下的过渡句来引入下文。选项D“Remember the following advice that can keep you safe.”
空后“It may be very dangerous to take the lift.”,后文在解释为什么在地震中乘坐电梯是极其危险的行为。 选项B“Don’t use a lift.”
根据空后句“If you can’t leave in time, you should quickly find a safe place around to hide.” A“Find a safe place.”
空前“Don’t shout all the time.”,作者在警告被困人员不要盲目呼喊,因为大喊大叫会消耗体能。选项E“You should save your energy and try to find some food and water.”

Have you ever visited Hukou Waterfall It is described as a shining pearl on the Yellow River, which is known as China’s “mother river”. Located on the border of Shaanxi and Shanxi, it is the largest yellow waterfall in the world and the second biggest in China.
When the Yellow River gets to Hukou, the riverbed gets much smaller. The water drops from 500 meters wide to only 30 meters, squeezing (压缩) the big river into a small space.
The water then falls into a deep pool like thousands of wild horses, creating a breathtaking scene. It takes only about 2 seconds for the rushing water to fall from the top to the bottom of the deep pool.
As the water pours down with tremendous (巨大的) force, it looks exactly like water spilling from the spout of a giant teapot. Because of this special shape, it is named Hukou Waterfall.
The tremendous power makes it hard to get close. From afar, you can enjoy the fog-covered yellow ocean. Words cannot describe its beauty unless you visit it in person.
Wonders include “smoke from the river”, boats on land, and rainbows. The falling water causes smoke and clouds, turning from yellow to grey, and then to blue. People call this heart-shaking view “smoke from the river”.
The view changes with the seasons. The best time to visit is in April, May, and from September to November.
56. Where is Hukou Waterfall located?
___________________________________________________________________________________________
57. How long does it take the water to fall from the top to the bottom?

C
