For college students Marta Bernardino and Sebastião Mendonça, the answer is yes. The two students created Trovador, a robot that can plant trees in hard-to-reach areas. Bernardino and Mendonça have a special connection to forests. They grew up playing in the woods near their homes in Portugal, a nation in Europe. But since 1980, wildfires have destroyed large areas of Portugal’s forests. Seeing this, the two wanted to do something. Experts say the main reason for wildfires is climate change. It has caused hotter and drier weather, and as a result, more wildfires happen. So it’s important to bring back forests because trees can help reduce the effects of climate change. However, it is a task that needs long-term work and proper technology to achieve. That’s exactly what the two did. When Bernardino and Mendonça were in high school, they built the first version (版本) of Trovador. Over time, they kept creating new versions, and each one was better than the last. Trovador now looks like a spider (蜘蛛), and it has six “legs”. Using the six “legs”, the lightweight robot can easily move up and down Portugal’s steep slopes (陡坡). For humans, these places are difficult to climb. The first version of Trovador could plant trees 28% faster than a human, while the newest one can plant up to 200 young trees each hour. “Trovador can carry young trees on its back and plant them across difficult ground without help,” the two shared. Bernardino and Mendonça plan to keep improving Trovador. They hope to make the robot cheaper and easier to use, so that people anywhere can use Trovador to plant trees. 7. What encouraged the two students to create Trovador? A. Their interest in machines. B. Their wish is to save the forests. C. Their curiosity about insects. 8. What can we learn about Trovador from paragraph 3? A. It looks like an insect without legs. B. It has improved several times over the years. C. Its first version took many years to finish. 9. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about? A. How the robot plants trees. B. How the robot climbs slopes. C. The strong abilities of the robot. 10. What can we infer (推断) from the two students’ plan? A. They will stop developing Trovador. B. They will only keep Trovador in Portugal. C. They hope Trovador can come into common use. 【答案】7. B 8. B 9. C 10. C 【解析】 【导语】本文讲述了葡萄牙大学生因森林火灾而创造机器人Trovador,用于在难以到达的地区植树,并不断改进。 【7题详解】 根据第二段“But since 1980, wildfires have destroyed large areas of Portugal’s forests. B Nicholas Joy, a 17-year-old teenager in America, likes skiing. On March 3, he went skiing in Maine (美国缅因州) . In the early afternoon, when he was planning to go home, a heavy snowstorm hit the area. Joy was unable to see far. Before he knew it, he had lost his way. The boy was all alone. He didn’t have food, water, or a phone. He was getting colder by the minute. Joy didn’t know where he was. He tried to calm himself down. He thought about all the survival shows he had watched on TV. It was time to put the tips he had learned to use. Joy decided to stop skiing. There would be a better chance of someone finding him if he stayed put (待在原地) . The first thing he did was find shelter from the freezing wind and snow. If he stayed outside, his body temperature would get very low, and he would die. Using his skis, Joy built a small snow cave. Then, he gathered (收集) many branches and put them on top of the cave (洞穴) to stay as warm as he could. By that evening, Joy was really hungry. He ate snow and drank water from a nearby river. He slept in the cave with his arms and legs close to his body. The next day, Joy went out to look for help. He couldn’t find anybody and went back to his cave. On March 5, Joy went out again to find help. He had walked for about a mile when a volunteer searcher found him. Finally, Joy was saved. Joy might not have survived if he hadn’t watched many survival shows and learned useful tips from them. He felt lucky to have been a fan of Bear Grylls’ survival show Man vs. Wild《荒野求生》. 3. Which of the following statements about Joy is true? A. Joy had never lost his way before. B. The snowstorm made Joy unable to see. C. Joy likes watching survival shows like Man vs. Wild. 4. What did Joy have when he lost his way? A. His skis. B. A smartphone and a bottle of water. C. Some food and hot water. 5. In order to stay as warm as he could, Joy ________. A. put many branches on top of his snow cave B. remained in the same place C. drank water from a nearby river 6. What happened on the second day? A. Joy went out to find help but didn’t see anybody. B. Joy went out to look for help and met a volunteer searcher. C. A volunteer searcher found Joy and helped him return home. C Can a robot help slow climate change? 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 Have you ever seen the sea playing “hide-and-seek (捉迷藏)?” At Chandipur Beach in eastern India, it happens every day.
