Liu Wenwen made history by becoming the first person in China to earn a PhD (博士学位) in the suona——a journey that proved the saying “where there’s a will, there’s a way”. As a traditional Chinese instrument, suona is not so popular among the young people nowadays.
Liu comes from a family of suona players. Before I was in Grade Seven, I didn’t like to help others. I would get annoyed when someone asked me for help. Things changed when I was in Grade Eight.
One cloudy day, when I was walking to school, I met a tall man. Carrying a long thin stick and wearing sunglasses, he stood at the crossing. I found this a little strange as it was early in the morning and yet he was wearing sunglasses. But I didn’t think much about it and crossed the road.
