For one Saturday of every month,15 medical students from McMaster University's
Waterloo campus,known as the GlamourGals,spend their morning providing facial and
nail (care for the people of Chartwell Terrace on the Square Retirement Residence
(养老院).
It's supported by GlamourGals Foundation,aU.S.-based nonprofit(非营利的)
organization that helps connect young people and seniors.Harleen Chahal,a second-year
medical student at McMaster University,.started the first Canadian chapter(地方分会)in

Terry Oleksiw,80,moved into Chartwell Terrace two years ago,and he has missed
the social life he had before.He doesn't get many visits from his children,as two of the
three live in British Columbia.But he loves the conversation when the GlamourGals visit
to cut his nails."The place is lit up,"said Oleksiw."It's the magic of young people.It's
almost a spiritual thing.There's a connection.There's the human touch."
Medical student Emily Zhang says creating that closeness and connection.is the goal
(of GlamourGals.And it goes.both ways."By being a GlamourGal,I can hear a lot
of people's different lived experiences when taking care of them,and this helps me a lot in
life,”she said
For Chahal,GlamourGals is a way to give back to the community.
As she moyes further into the medical field,she understands she's not going to be
able to spend this kind of time with patients.But she hopes her experience as a
GlamourGal doesn't just help the seniors she visits monthly.She wants it to improve how
she helps patients in the future.
"I don't think many of us often have conversations with elderly people and practice
these types of communication skills.I can see the.soft skills that I'm learning here being
useful now and probably when I'm a doctor as well,"Chahal said.

day he thought that while he was still young,he should do something else-something that
