I.阅读理解
A
Over the years, you've probably known a
good number of people -some for only a
short period and others for a much longer
time.If you spend a moment thinking back on
the people who have meant the very most to
you, selflessness will be the same thing they
share. There might have been a person who
really believed in you.Someone taught you
something important.Someone cared for you in
his or her own way.Someone has simply
always remained your friend.
Many years ago,I traveled through the
beautiful,history-rich country of Greece.With
only a small backpack,I stayed at youth
hotels,visiting city after city.One day,a
shoulder strap on my backpack broke.I didn't
speak any Greek and the owner didn't speak
any English.I went to the front desk of my
hotel and tried to ask him if there might be a
shop nearby where I could have it repaired. He
was clearly very busy. But he asked someone
to watch over the front desk and then signed to
me to follow him.We walked together for a
few blocks, arriving at a little shoe repair
shop.Within ten minutes,my backpack was
repaired, and then the hotel owner insisted on
paying for it!
I was shocked by this powerful, unexpected
kindness.More than any other thing,it's what I
recall most often when I think about my trip to
Greece.Sometimes, you may not have even realized
how much your selflessness toward someone has
mattered. As the saying goes,"To the world you
may be one person, but to one person you may be
the world.”

I'd like to share a little story with you
about something that happened when I was
four.I remember it clearly. Our loving family
dog was nearing the end of his life.My father
picked him up and put him in a little bed.Our
dog, whom we loved very much, bit my father
when he attempted to help him.How could
he?Why?I couldn't understand it.I didn't like
him anymore.
I hadn't thought about that story for a
long time but something that happened last
week brought it back to me.I went to speak

with a friend.When I knocked on the door,I
met in an angry look and a few harsh(尖刻的)
words.When the door was slammed(砰地关
E)in my face,I stood there shocked,and
suddenly,I thought of my dog bit my father 20
years ago. What brought that story back was
that same feeling of betrayal(背叛,辜负).
Both stories taught me something the next
day.You see, when I got up in the morning and was
told my dog had died,it became clear to me that he
must have been in great pain.Much the same for
the other story when I learned my friend's wife had
just left him.
We all have different opinions and feelings.
And all of those can cause you to say and do things
that can't be understood by other people, because
they are not in the same situation with you.
If you meet someone who acts in a way that
doesn't seem to fit the situation, put out your hand
and be patient. You may turn around a story by
your actions.

the author.

A picture of 17-year-old Zhang Guimei
has won great popularity on China's social
media.The young girl with black-rimmed
glasses and two short braids(辫子)is smiling
brightly into the camera.Netizens are deeply
touched by the fresh-faced girl in the picture,
which is quite different from Zhang's now aged
and weathered face people are familiar with,as
it tells a story of a woman who has devoted her
life to promoting education and fighting
poverty in rural areas.
Born in Northeast China's Heilongjiang
Province in 1957,Zhang traveled to Yunnan at
the age of 17 and has been helping girls from
poor areas pursue education for over 40 years.
Zhang helped establish the country's first
senior high school to offer free education for
girls from poor families. The school provides
free education to girls who would otherwise
have had no chance to study after completing
their nine years of compulsory education.
Despite having serious health problems,
Zhang Guimei took morning classes with
students for 12 years. She has also racked up
110,000 kilometers visiting her students
families over the years. Most of her salary and
bonuses were spent on students.Since the
school opened in 2008,it has seen more than
1,800 students progress to universities and
colleges.
"I was built to be a mountain not a creek,
rising to the high peaks with the small valleys
at my feet.I was born to be great, not
worthless, standing on the shoulders of the
giants,the petty cowards beneath me."The
motto of Huaping High School for Girls is also
a true reflection of Zhang Guimei's strength
and resolve.

Courtesy(礼貌)in English
Courtesy is an art form that shows our
moral character.China's history is one of a
civilization(文明)with a highly developed
sense of etiquette(礼仪);therefore,we
should speak English as politely as possible
when we go abroad.
Ordering meals
1 Beginning your request with "May
I..?”“Could I..?”is considered polite..
For example,“May I have a latte?”It is also
-17

politer to say,“I''ll have..”or“I'd like...”
instead of“I want.”because it will be
considered as less direct.
Asking for help
If we need to ask someone for help,we
should say,“Excuse me”,or“Do you mind if I
ask you something?”2
Instead,for
example,we should say,"Could you tell me
where the rest rooms are?"
3
Local people in other countries sometimes
speak really fast,so it can be hard for us to
catch all the words. In such a situation,we can
say,“Pardon me?”to ask them to repeat what
they said.In my opinion, saying "Can you
please repeat that?I didn't follow.is the
politest way.
Refusing an invitation
4 If we really can't make it,we can first
say,“T'd like to..”and then say,“but I have to
work late”,for example..Or“I'm afraid I can't
.”,or even,“That sounds great,but..”
Expressing disagreement
We can use sentences like "I see what you're
saying,but I think...",or"You could be right,but
don't forget that..."or even,"Yes,that's true,but
I'm not sure that..”5
A.Can't catch what's been said?
B.We should not ask our questions directly.
C.Being polite when you order something is
very important.
D.Do you know some basic rules of answering
the telephone?
E.It is also important to know how to refuse
someone's invitation.
F.“Please”and“thank you”go a long way
when we speak to each other.
G.These are great ways to express disagreement
politely by being less direct.6,B[由上文可知,天气变好,粮食充裕,人自然(naturally)就想开派:断出画线短语的意思是“走过的路程加起来”,即“累计”的意思,与
