D. My dream job
Your school newspaper is collecting students’ articles about their dream jobs. You want to have a try.
Think
I want to be a scientist who studies living things.
Many people don’t care about nature these days. I want to help by doing research. I’ve read about animals that are in trouble. It’s important to let people know how valuable nature is and how to protect it.
Read a student’s article. What is his dream job, and why?
/ˈvæljuəbl/ adj.

I know it will be hard to become a life scientist, but I’ll try my best to make it happen.

Prepare
Focus on types of sentence structures in the article.
Mark “S” for simple sentences, “CD” for compound sentences, “CX” for complex sentences, and “CDCX” for compound-complex sentences.
1. S — 简单句(Simple Sentence)
Shanghai is a modern city.(上海是一座现代城市。
My brother and I often play basketball after school.(我和哥哥放学后常打篮球。

Mark “S” for simple sentences, “CD” for compound sentences, “CX” for complex sentences, and “CDCX” for compound-complex sentences.
2. CD — 并列句(Compound Sentence)
中考常用连词口诀:“fanboys”(for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so),中考最爱考 and(顺承)、but(转折)、so(因果)。
I enjoy reading novels, but my sister prefers watching cartoons.(我喜欢看小说,但我妹妹更喜欢看动画片。

(Complex Sentence)

(Complex Sentence)
We will cancel the trip if it rains tomorrow.(如果明天下雨,我们就取消旅行。——if引导的状语从句依附于主句“We will cancel the trip”)
The girl who is wearing a red dress is my sister.(穿红裙子的女孩是我妹妹。——who引导的定语从句修饰the girl)

(Compound-Complex Sentence)

We can use different sentence types in our writing:

• Complex sentences e.g. When he was young, he dreamed of being a firefighter.
• Compound-complex sentences e.g. My uncle wanted to be an architect when he was young, but he ended up becoming a teacher, which he finds very rewarding, even if it wasn’t his original dream job.

I want to be a sign language interpreter
Many deaf people struggle to express themselves in daily life, and I hope to remove this obstacle. This job is truly meaningful because it helps build a bridge between the deaf and hearing communities. I want to give everyone a voice, no matter who they are.
Sample
I am good at language learning and I have a natural curiosity about different ways of communicating. I also pay close attention to body language and facial expressions, which are essential for accurate interpretation. That is why I have joined my school’s sign language club and I take part in volunteer activities at the local deaf centre every weekend.
Sample
I know that the road to becoming a qualified interpreter is long and hard, but I am determined to work towards it step by step. I will never stop improving my skills, because every smile from a deaf person is my greatest reward.
