Nowadays we don’t need tired horses or whole lychee trees anymore. High-speed trains, planes and cold-chain trucks carry fresh lychees across thousands of kilometers in just one day. Too slow!
Some food waste breaks down very slowly. People often throw more trash before the old trash is gone!
How long does it take?
Apple core
About 8 weeks
Noodles
1 to 2 months
Banana peel
Up to 2 years
Chewing gum (口香糖)
Usually 20 to 25 years
Bad for wild animals!
Wild animals eat many different kinds of food to stay strong and healthy. But if they eat too much food waste people leave behind, like fruit peels, they can get sick.
Trees don’t need it!

I can still remember my primary school project on animals. I chose to write about whales. I have loved them from a young age.
I’m not quite sure why I love them. It might be something about their shape. They have a smooth (流畅的) shape, and their tails look like a heart. They also move so slowly and beautifully, like a tree dancing in the wind. Because of this, they seem very clever.
So, of course, one of my best memories was seeing a type of whale called the Southern Right Whale in Argentina (阿根廷). Watching them move smoothly in the water, I felt happy and excited. They were so wonderful!
And I’m not the only one who loves whales. Different people around the world also have a special place in their hearts for whales. Take the Maori people in New Zealand (新西兰) as an example. Living by the ocean (海洋), they see whales as guardians (护卫) of the ocean and talk about them a lot in their traditional stories.
I was also interested in whales because they need our protection (保护). That’s what my school homework was about-animals we need to protect. Whales play a big role in the food chain (食物链) in the ocean. So, protecting whales means protecting the whole ocean.
32. What does the underlined word “this” refer to?
A. Their smooth shape. B. Moving slowly and beautifully.
C. Their tails looking like a heart. D. Being very clever.
33. Why does the writer mention (提到) the Maori people in New Zealand?
A. To tell a story about whales.
B. To explain why he likes whales.
C. To show that he wants to visit New Zealand.
D. To show that whales are important to other cultures too.
34. Why does the writer say “protecting whales means protecting the whole ocean”?
A. Because whales are the biggest animals.
B. Because whales have a smooth shape.
C. Because whales are in traditional stories.
D. Because whales play a big role in the food chain.
35. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. Guardians of the Ocean B. My Love for Whales
B. A Story of Whales D. Protect the Ocean
