Do you know our planet has seven continents? You probably name six continents easily: Asia, Africa, Oceania, Europe, North America and South America. These lands have been home to humans for thousands of years. Now look at the bottom (底部) of the world map. There you will find the seventh continent: Antarctica.
Antarctica is the coldest continent. The temperature in summer is mostly above 0℃. In winter the temperature is almost always below -18℃. The coldest temperature recorded on Earth was at an Antarctic science station in July 1983. It got down to -89.2℃. That’s why thick ice covers Antarctica. The ice holds 90% of the world’s fresh water and it has been building up over thousands of years.
But here’s the surprise: Some special animals still live there. Among them, the emperor penguin (帝企鹅) , the largest penguin in the world, is the most famous. It stands more than 1.2 metres tall. The father emperor penguin has a big job. It stands on ice and holds an egg between its feet and body for around two months without eating any food until the mother emperor penguin comes back.
No country around the world owns Antarctica. Scientists from different countries have worked hard to protect Antarctica’s wildlife and land. Some of them come to study the wildlife. Other scientists study Antarctica’s ice.
Antarctica remains one of the least-known lands in the world. The cold and icy seas make it a difficult place to study. However, it is a place of uncommon beauty that gives opportunities to research surprising nature.
24. Where is Antarctica in the world map according to Paragraph 1?
A. A B. B C. C
25. What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us?
A. Beautiful Antarctica. B. Freezing Antarctica. C. Common Antarctica.
26. What can we learn from Paragraphs 3 and 4?
A. Only penguins live in Antarctica happily.
B. Some countries are fighting for Antarctica.
C. Scientists study Antarctica in different ways.
27. Which of the following shows the structure of the text?
A. B. C.
28. What do we know about the father emperor penguin from the passage?
A. It often leaves the egg to look for food.
B. It keeps the egg warm for about two months without eating.
C. It lets the mother emperor penguin hold the egg all the time.

Gift giving is common. Over time, different cultures have developed their own gift giving customs and traditions.
Gift giving in China
In China, gifts are given for holidays, such as birthdays or special events like a dinner at a friend’s home.
While it’s true that a gift is just a gift, what is more important is the meaning behind the gift. In China, some gifts need to be avoided including clocks, shoes, umbrellas, knives, green hats, anything in groups of four and anything in black or white.
Gift Wrapping (包装)
Chinese gifts can be wrapped with wrapping paper. Red is for luck. Pink is for happiness. Gold is for wealth (财富) . So wrapping paper in these colors is the best. White and black are the symbols of death and should not be used.
Red Envelopes (红包)
Wrapping money in a red envelope means good wishes. People usually give red envelopes to kids during Chinese New Year.
Gift giving in America
Whether a gift is given or not, greeting cards are often used for birthdays, Christmas, Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, weddings (婚礼) and Easter. In America, common gifts are candies or toys for children, and chocolate, fine food, books, clothes and tools for adults.
After receiving a gift, people show thanks to the person by saying “Thank you so much.” or “This is too nice.” Hugs or kisses may be exchanged. Returning gifts is not a must, but thank-you cards are very common. And they should usually be sent out in the same week when the gifts are received.
Gift Opening
In America, gifts are usually opened at the end of an event or a birthday party, except for the wedding. Gifts are never opened during a wedding. They can be opened only after all the guests have left.
34. What is the passage mainly about?

Dear Peter,
I’m very happy to hear that you’re coming to China this summer vacation. I hope to see you soon. Now let me tell you something about customs and manners in our country.
First, when meeting people in China, we usually shake hands and smile. It’s polite to greet others warmly and talk about general topics like the weather or travel plans. Next, for table manners, remember to use chopsticks correctly. Don’t stick them upright in your bowl. Also, avoid pointing at people with chopsticks. Wait until elderly people start eating before you begin. Finally, if you visit a Chinese family, take a small gift like fruit or tea to show respect. Always knock before entering, and it’s customary to remove your shoes unless the host says otherwise.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask!
Welcome to China. I hope you’ll have a wonderful time in our country.
Yours,
Teng Fei
