Different countries have their own special birthday celebration customs. Let’s explore some of them together.
In Mexico
A classic custom at Mexican birthday parties is the piñata. Parents fill it with candies and then hang it from the ceiling (天花板). The birthday child is blindfolded (蒙住眼睛的) and hits the piñata with a stick until it breaks. All the candies fall on the floor, and everyone shares. It is really fun!
In Vietnam (越南)
Children do not celebrate on the actual day they were born. Instead, on New Year’s Day, they celebrate their birthdays. Parents give children red envelopes (红包) with lucky money in them. What a great way to celebrate a birthday!
In Scotland
Family members or friends lift the birthday child by the arms and legs and bump (碰) them gently against the ground—once for each year of their age, and one more bump for luck in the coming year.
In South Africa
South African children do not celebrate every birthday. However, on their 21st birthday, their parents make a key and give it to them. It is a sign from the parents that the child can now “unlock the door to their future life”. Cool, don’t you think?
14. What do parents put inside the piñata?

That brought Chelsie back to many years before. She got used to life in a wheelchair (轮椅) and looked for community herself. “The one thing that saved me was finding other people like me,” she said. Now, she’s building that community for others.
Chelsie’s life changed in February 2010 when she was hurt in a car accident; doctors said she would never walk again.
Following months of treatment and training, Chelsie found her way back to dancing. In 2012, she joined a TV show with other women in wheelchairs, which helped her realize she was not alone and inspired her to improve her dance skills and start her own team Rollettes.
In 2014, she moved to Los Angeles, the US. She once took a difficult hip-hop class and was laughed at by others. However, she didn’t quit—her deep love for dancing won. She began inviting other wheelchair-using women to dance. Women from around the world now fly to L. A. for the Rollettes experience.

Many students think confidence means “I am great”. They always try to put their best foot forward around classmates and teachers. ____29____ It’s not about shouting “I’m perfect” every day. That kind of confidence is like a paper house—it falls easily when you make mistakes or feel down.
True confidence comes from accepting yourself along with your weaknesses. ____30____ True confidence lets you say “I can’t do this now” without feeling bad. Instead of hiding weaknesses, you accept them and make a plan to improve. This inner power holds you up when you fall.
____31____ You carry a ruler in your heart, measuring good or bad, right or wrong all the time. This makes you afraid—afraid of not being good enough, afraid of failure. These fears steal your confidence.
People who live freely have lasting confidence. They don’t have to win others’ praise to prove themselves. They don’t have strict rules like “I must be great”. ____32____
So, to build strong confidence, let go of the “must be excellent” burden (负担). Allow yourself to make mistakes and learn useful lessons from them. What’s more, go at your own pace (节奏). ____33____ Then, start trying bravely when you are fully prepared. True confidence grows when you stand by yourself, no matter what happens.

Mount Huangshan is world-famous for its “Four Wonders”. However, if you visit in winter, you can also enjoy the great beauty of Huangshan rime (雾凇).
Huangshan rime forms on high mountain pines, blending (融合) the strength of these ancient trees with the softness of ice. This can be found nowhere else.
How does Huangshan rime form?
Rime forms when three key conditions come together perfectly. First, cold weather is needed. The air temperature must drop below 0°C, often between -7°C and -2°C on the high peaks of Mount Huangshan. Second, there must be plenty of water vapour (水蒸气) in the air. Third, a light wind is of great importance. It helps water vapour stick to branches, rocks, and other surfaces, where it turns directly into ice through a process called deposition (凝华).
When is the best time to visit Huangshan rime?
Early morning around sunrise, usually from 6:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., is the perfect time to visit. As the sun rises, its light hits the ice crystals, making them shine like diamonds (钻石), while the clear sky lends the view (景色) a magical beauty.
▲
Huangshan rime is in danger. First of all, global warming matters a lot. Winters are getting warmer and drier, with fewer freezing days. In addition, some visitors touch or shake the branches, ruining (破坏) the rime. What’s more, the growing number of visitors every winter harms local plants and changes the environment, making it even harder for rime to form.
Save Huangshan Rime!
• Fight global warming
We should live a low-carbon (低碳的) life. Small efforts from everyone count.
• Stop bad behaviour (行为)
We should say no to the harmful behaviour and treat nature with respect.
• Control the number of visitors
Don’t let too many visitors visit at the same time. Book tickets online first!
…

Chelsie Hill entered the hotel ballroom (舞厅) and found 100 women waiting for her. As she taught them her dance moves, she found it encouraging. Then a woman came over to her in tears. “I finally find friends,” she said. “It’s because of you.”
The girl who was told she would never walk again is now building a global (全球的) community, proving that while she may not walk, she never stops dancing.

Where will you go when you are free? Shopping centres or just home? Well, these choices may seem old-fashioned to many. Young people these days prefer to hang out in a café (咖啡馆)with cats or dogs.
Pet cafés are popular places for people to relax. Spending time with lovely animals there helps them get away from busy and stressful daily life. Now, there are over 3,500 cat cafés and more than 200 dog cafés across the country.
These places have attracted many pet lovers, including Kwak Nakyung. She likes the cat Nainai very much. “I learned that many of the cats there are rescued strays (流浪的动物), and it warms my heart to see them living better lives,” Kwak said.
Kwak usually orders a cup of coffee and a sweet, enjoying a quiet afternoon with cats around. “Being with cats always helps me relax, especially after a week of schoolwork,” she added.
According to the café owner, customers keep pouring in. Some come for the comfortable presence of the cats, while others visit to donate food or adopt (收养)them. The workers in the café will share details of each cat’s personality with their guests, letting them know which ones enjoy being hugged or fed.

【导语】本篇文章介绍了宠物咖啡馆当下在国内十分火爆,年轻人偏爱前往宠物咖啡馆放松,门店不仅可以喝咖啡,还能救助流浪小动物、开展动物领养活动。
【24题详解】
根据文章第一段开头 “Where will you go when you are free? Shopping centres or just home?”可知,作者是通过提出问题的方式来引入话题的。
【25题详解】
第二段首句提到“Pet cafés are popular places for people to relax.”,随后列举了全国有超过 3500 家猫咖啡馆和 200 多家狗咖啡馆的数据。这些数字旨在支撑首句的观点,说明宠物咖啡馆非常受欢迎。
【26题详解】
根据第四段“Kwak usually orders a cup of coffee...”可知人们可以喝咖啡(b);根据第五段“...others visit to donate food or adopt them.”

Dear teachers and school friends,
It is a great honour to stand here and give my speech to all of you. Today my topic is “Volunteering Brings Light”. To me, volunteering is about small, warm acts that make a difference. As students, we should be part of this meaningful change.
Last term, a new student named Xiao Yu joined our class. She was quiet and always sat alone in the corner. She never talked to anyone. As a member of our class volunteer group, I decided to help her fit in. I invited her to join our group activities, shared interesting stories with her and introduced her to more classmates. Gradually, she became outgoing and started to take part in class activities actively. One day she smiled and told me, “Thank you. I finally feel at home here.”
I’ve realized that volunteering is made up of these little kind acts. They can really light up someone’s dark days!
Thank you for your attention!
