(原创人物传记)Zhang Heng was a famous scientist and inventor in ancient China. He lived during the Eastern Han Dynasty. Zhang was not only interested in science but also talented in literature and art.
One of his most famous achievements is the invention of the seismograph (地动仪). At that time, earthquakes happened often, and people were very afraid because they didn't know when the ground would shake. Zhang decided to solve this problem. After many years of hard work, he successfully invented the first instrument in the world to detect earthquakes. It looked like a big round jar with eight dragon heads around it. Each dragon held a bronze ball in its mouth. When an earthquake happened, one of the dragons would drop its ball into the mouth of a toad (蟾蜍) below, making a loud noise to warn people.
Besides science, Zhang Heng was also a great astronomer (天文学家). He calculated that the sky was 250,000 li away from the earth. He also drew one of the earliest star maps in the world. People today still remember him as a man of great wisdom. In 1970, the International Astronomical Union named a crater (环形山) on the moon "Zhang Heng" to honor him.
