On January 19, 2026, six Chinese students made a new paper plane world record. The old record was 88.318 meters. It was set by an American team. The Chinese students threw a paper plane 98.43 meters. They broke the old record that stood for 40 years. The new record is over 10 meters longer, almost reaching 100 meters.
The team tried a new design. They didn’t use the usual style. Instead, they made a “high-speed gliding” (高速滑翔) plane called “Research”. It flies steadily (稳定地) and fast. The throwing speed is over 130 kilometers per hour. It is almost as fast as a baseball player’s throw.
They also made the plane very carefully. They used 3D-printed clear boards to protect the paper from changing shape when moving in the sky. This helped it face less air resistance so that the paper plane could fly farther and faster. Here are the four key members of this team.
•Liu Liwen (19, college student):
He designed the plane and threw it. He studied the data (数据) of the past 40 years and found a rule: the record rises about 10 meters each 10 years.
•Tang Shuai (18,technical school student):
He was good at folding. He made a special tool to make the paper plane fly steadily.
•Yang Shi’an (19, college student):
He is the team leader. He started a group to bring paper plane lovers together.
•Huang Yizhou (15, Grade 9 student):
He improved the paper plane and fixed it during the stage.
Paper planes are easy to make but can show great skills. Making them requires knowing how air works and how to throw well. Their team wants to make it an international sport, changing people’s old ideas.

Feng Zidong is a student at Lanzhou University. He finished his college studies this year. In his graduation thesis (毕业论文), he wrote something special. He thanked the security guards at the school gate. Why? Here is the warm story.
Every day, an old woman came to the campus (校园). Her back was bent and she carried a big bag. She picked up recyclables-empty bottles and paper boxes from the rubbish bins. She sold them to earn some money. The university did not let everyone in freely, but the guards always quietly let her in.
After picking up what she needed, she did something kind. She found a broom and carefully swept the ground around the bins. Then she put all the rubbish back in the right place.
Feng Zidong saw this for three years. He was very touched. He wrote, “The guards’ kindness gives the old woman a chance to earn some money, and she helps keep the campus clean. This is kindness from both sides. It taught me an important lesson. Now I can only do small things, like saving bottles and boxes for her. By the end of January 2025, the world’s largest iceberg (冰山), A23a, about twice the size of Greater London and standing 130 feet tall, was moving towards South Georgia, a British island near Antarctica. This worries scientists a lot.
The iceberg started moving in November 2023 after being stuck (被卡住) on the seafloor for more than 30 years. Experts think it will reach the waters near South Georgia within weeks, which may harm the island’s rich ecosystem (生态系统).
If the huge iceberg gets stuck in the waters around the island, it might block the paths (堵住通道) penguins and seals use to look for food. Penguins and seals might need to travel farther, spending more energy and returning with less food for their babies. As we have seen before, this could cause many young animals to die.
Dr Andrew Meijers, a scientist who once watched the iceberg on a research ship, called it a huge “ice wall”. He explained that South Georgia is important for penguins and seals to raise their young. However, some experts believe the ecosystem will return to normal by itself. Ted Scambos, an ice scientist, said the Southern Ocean’s wildlife has survived icebergs over thousands of years and can go through this hard time successfully.
It is normal for icebergs to break away. However, scientists note this happens more often now because of the warming of the Earth. Rising temperatures melt (融化) ice faster, creating larger icebergs like A23a.
Experts predict that A23a will finally break into smaller pieces and melt. However, its influences on South Georgia’s animals could last long. This event is a warning for us. While nature can often return to normal by itself, it is delicate (脆弱的) at the same time. Humans’ actions also can bring risks to it.
41. What makes scientists worried?
A. A23a’s great size. B. A23a’s ecosystem.
C. A23a’s special height. D. A23a’s moving direction.
42. What may happen after the iceberg hits South Georgia?
A. It may change the island’s climate.
B. It may influence the island’s ecosystem.
C. More animals might live on the iceberg.
D. Animals may find more food on the iceberg.
43. What can we know about Andrew Meijers and Ted Scambos?
A. They both worry a lot about the iceberg.
B. They both call on people to save the ecosystem.
C. They have different ideas on the iceberg’s influence.
D. They don’t care much about the iceberg’s influence.
44. What can we infer from Paragraph 5?
A. There will be more icebergs.
B. A23a has been the largest up to now.
C. South Georgia’s animals may die out.
D. Human’s actions also can bring risks to A23a.
45. What will the passage probably discuss next?
A. Why we should protect animals?
B. How nature returns to normal by itself?
C. When A23a will break into smaller pieces?
D. How human’s activities can influence nature?

Hello. I’m Lia-Lia Wang. I’m from London, and I’m a middle school student. I’m really excited because tomorrow my family are going to visit my dad’s home town-Anhui, China!
After a long flight, we finally arrived. Early the next morning we set off for Huangshan Mountain. Dad shared
much about the mountain on the bus. Climbing up Huangshan was very tiring but amazing. All kinds of pine trees stood along the way, and we visited the famous Guest-Greeting Pine. Its branches stretched out like arms to welcome me.
To see the famous Huangshan sunrise, we spent one night on the mountain. We waited for a long time. When the sun’s orange-red light showed up, I was shocked by the sea of white clouds covering green peaks. I would keep this beautiful scene in mind forever.
Later we went to my grandparents’ house in Hongcun Village at the foot of Huangshan. My grandparents waited for us at the village entrance. Though we chatted online weekly, I hugged them warmly.
We tried many dishes in Hongcun. When I heard that we would try something called “hairy tofu”, I was a little bit scared! But Grandma told me that the “hair” on the tofu is actually a fungus (真菌). The tofu is known as “the first wonder of Anhui”, so I must try it! I took a piece with a bamboo stick, closed my eyes and took a bite. Surprisingly, it was soft, salty and spicy. I had another… and then another…I couldn’t stop!
On our last night of the trip, we sat around my grandparents’ table. I found it hard to smile. I loved the whole trip and had many unforgettable experiences, but I couldn’t help but feel a little sad. Even though this trip was so short, I felt a really strong connection to this place. I loved everything: the food, the scenery, the culture… and especially the people.
My grandpa asked why I looked so sad, so I told him how I felt. He stood up and went into the kitchen. Later, ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________.

Down the drain
The Duggans had moved into a new house. At the bottom of the yard, there was a river. Jack and his sister Kat liked to hang over the fence. They liked watching the leaves and sticks as they swirled past.
One day, Jack discovered the drain pipe in the ground. His father said a drain pipe took rain water underground and down to the river.
Suddenly Jack had one of his dumb ideas!
Jack pulled the cover off the drain with a strong pole. “We could put some sticks down here,” he said. “Let’s see whose stick gets to the river first.”
So Jack and Kat dropped sticks into the drain. Then they ran to the fence. They watched the sticks shoot out of the pipe like arrows and splash into the river. “My stick was faster than yours!” shouted Jack.
Jack and Kat couldn’t really tell whose stick was first. Then Kat had one of her dumb ideas.
Kat got a spoon and a fork. “You can have the fork,” she said to Jack.
Jack and Kat dashed to the fence. The spoon flew out first and splashed into the river.
Jack didn’t like losing, so he said they had to do it again.
Three spoons and forks shot out the pipe. They disappeared into the murky river. The spoon was always first. “Find something else,” said Jack.
So Kat found her mother’s old china dolls. Moths had chewed holes in their clothes and hair. “Dad can’t stand them,” said Kat. “He says they are just dust bags.”
So down the pipe went the china dolls. “Mine won!” shouted Jack.
“Down the drain” was a great game for Jack and Kat. The drain became a favourite place for them to dump things they didn’t want.
Lunch not eaten, went down the drain. Dirty socks, went down the drain. Kat’s jacket that the kids all laughed at, went… down the drain.
The problem was that the socks and the jacket never made it to the river.
One day, Mrs Duggan was going out in her new shoes. Suddenly, she sank into the slushy ground. Then she saw water bubbling out of the drain pipe like a bath of ginger pop.
When Jack and Kat got home from school, they saw the digger and the mess.
Their father was waving Jack’s dirty, wet socks and Kat’s muddy jacket!
Mr and Mrs Duggan were really cross. “You could have killed the river,” they said.
“Kill a river? How can you kill a river?” asked Jack.
“Rubbish in the river can take all the oxygen out,” said his dad. “When plants don’t get oxygen, they die. Then animals in the river die too, because they have no plants to eat.”
“It was a dumb idea,” mumbled Jack.
“A really dumb idea,” said his mum.
After that, Jack and Kat had to spend many weekends at the beach, picking up rubbish.
They picked up a heap of stuff-old shoes, plastic bottles, nappies, even underpants!
Their mum, of course, found out about the dolls and she was mad! “They were antiques!” she said.
Jack saw his father grin. Maybe he thought that shoving those dolls down the drain wasn’t such a dumb idea!
