Betty lived in a small town. Beautiful flowers were seen everywhere in the town. Because of the shyness, Betty just stood with few words in public. The shy girl hardly talked to people in social activities. She was often considered as a quiet girl in the community. She felt like a wallflower and wondered if she would go unnoticed all the time.
However, her closest friend, Fiona, was completely different. Fiona loved to communicate with others and she encouraged Betty to change. She told Betty that life wasn’t always as beautiful as roses and that everyone was able to make it full of roses.
With the encouragement of Fiona, Betty began to change. Instead of being a wallflower, she started attending a community theater class. She took an active part in acting in the theater group. Her gift for acting began to shine. However, new difficulties were never far away. One of Betty’s classmates became a thorn (刺) in her side. The classmate was not satisfied with her achievements, but Betty continued to deal with the situation. She managed to show herself and became friends with the classmate. All the changes made her feel fresh every day.
Betty’s hard work paid off when the town’s famous director, Mr. Johnson, watched one of her plays. He liked her acting so much that he offered her the lead role in his new play. Betty’s moment arrived. People were happy to watch her show.
Finally, Betty became a confident (自信的) girl. Her change was like a beautiful rose in full flower. She encountered many difficulties which taught her that there’s no rose without a thorn. David, aged 14, wants everyone in his school to know they’re important members of the school. People are connected with each other. No one is an island.
One day, David saw a sad boy on the playground. After talking with the boy, he knew that the boy felt lonely because he couldn’t fit in well in the school. David remembered seeing some other students who felt lonely, too. This made David come up with an idea. He wanted to give something special to everyone in the school to remind them that they were connected.
David told his parents his idea. And they were very glad to support him.
After discussing the idea with his teachers and classmates, he decided on buttons (徽章). Together with his classmates, David printed the buttons with the sentence “You Belong Here!” Then they gave the buttons to each student in the school. David hoped that the buttons would help the students remember that they all belonged here. He also hoped the students could make friends actively.
Now, almost all the students in the school are wearing the buttons. The students in the school spend more time with each other than before. Even the students who were lonely before are interacting (互动) a lot more with others. David is very happy because he knows that he has really made a difference! 三、【2026·广西·真题】
After living away from the coast for more than 25 years, I came back to my hometown in Scotland. One of the things I enjoy most here is the sound of seagulls (海鸥).
I grew up in a village by the sea. Only 26 people lived here, but seagulls were everywhere. Their calls were around us all the time. During my childhood, I often heard the seagulls call down the chimney (烟囱). I imagined they were using the chimney as a phone to send messages to us.
My family even had a “pet” seagull. We named him Willy. The top of the wall of our garden was his favourite place. From there, he had a good view of our dining room. As soon as we sat down for a meal, he usually landed by the window and waited patiently for food. Sometimes, when Willy was very hungry, he would knock at the window to ask for food. Then, we would throw him bits of bread through the window. And he would skillfully catch the bread in mid-air.
Once, when my mum was feeding Willy with a spoon, he took the spoon with food and swallowed (吞下) it whole. We were worried that he would get hurt. To our surprise, when he appeared for his meal the next day, he looked all right. And later we found the spoon in the garden! He was probably the only seagull in Scotland to return cutlery (餐具).
I have a deep love for seagulls. When I wake up to their calls or see them flying in the sky, a feeling of happiness washes over me. I know I’m home.
1. What does the writer enjoy most about seagulls?
A. Their shape. B. Their size. C. Their sound.
2. What did seagulls use the chimney as according to the writer?
A. A radio. B. A bell. C. A phone.
3. Why would Willy knock at the window?
A. To ask for food. B. To greet the family. C. To enter the house.
4. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. A daily habit of feeding Willy.
B. An unusual story of Willy and a spoon.
C. The surprising discovery of a lost feeding spoon.
5. What do seagulls bring to the writer?
A. Happiness. B. Success. C. Health.

Have you ever imagined what bees can do with their tiny brains? Now scientists are looking into a bee’s brain.
Clint Perry, a scientist, has spent much time studying how bees think. He says studying bees is not very different from studying other animals. “The main difficulty is to design (设计) an experiment for bees and get what we want,” he says. “With humans, we can ask them a question and get an answer. But we can’t use the same way to get an answer from bees. They are just trying to get sugar. Bees like sugar.”
The fact that bees like sugar is helpful for scientists to design experiments. For example, in one experiment, Perry gave bees a task: to find delicious sugar on a landing place above a black bar (棒). Perry made the task easier or harder by moving the landing place farther from or closer to the black bar. He found that bees would avoid the task when it was difficult. And when the task was easy, bees would try it.
As for humans, we might choose not to take a test when we weren’t ready for it. And we might choose to take the test when we were well prepared. In the same way, bees seemed to make decisions like humans.
Perry points out that we are not sure whether bees actually make a thoughtful choice from experiments. Now scientists still do not know how bees manage to do so much with their tiny brains. But learning more about how bees’ brains work could help us learn more about how our own brains deal with information.
1. What did Perry study in his experiments?
A. How bees sleep. B. How bees think. C. How bees dream.
2. What can we know from Paragraph 2?
A. Bees can talk. B. Bees are lazy. C. Bees like sugar.
3. What would bees do when the task was easy according to Paragraph 3?
A. They would try it. B. They would avoid it. C. They would praise it.
4. What’s the importance of looking into bees’ brains?
A. It helps us learn how human brains work.
B. It tells us how to make thoughtful choices.
C. It lets us know how to deal with information.
5. Where is the article probably taken from?
A. A travel magazine. B. A sports magazine. C. A science magazine.
二、【2025·广西·真题】
Last weekend, I went camping after a long time of tiring work. The trip let me enjoy the clear lake and beautiful views in the woods. I felt the difference at once. I relaxed. I came home feeling rested and a little more cheerful. Going camping became a way to reduce the worry in my life.
I not only got a nice weekend, but I was also experiencing the benefits (益处) of nature to my mental health (心理健康)— something that researchers and healthcare providers have long noticed. Research has found that as little as five minutes in nature can be helpful for people to reduce worry and feel happier. This means that we can get relaxed and feel better from stepping outside right away.
If we are unable to put our whole body and mind into nature — for example, by taking a weekend camping trip — we can still find chances in our area. We can take a five-minute break in a small park near our house or take a moment to sit under a large tree. We’ll find them useful to refresh our mind. Our better feelings in later life can demonstrate the active influence of nature.
Besides simply spending more time outdoors, consider how we can enjoy nature even if we have no time to get close to nature. Listen to recorded bird songs or rainstorms instead of music, bring green plants or put pictures of natural beauty into our home. Although bringing nature indoors is quite different from a real outdoor experience, we can still feel nature and experience improved feelings.
Being in nature doesn’t ask anything of us. Slow down, go outside, and notice what’s around us. Listen, touch and smell, and we will really notice a benefit in our mental health.
1. What did the writer do last weekend?
A. The writer went camping. B. The writer went shopping. C. The writer went skating.
2. Why does the writer mention the research in Paragraph 2?
A. To discuss the method of the health research.
B. To explain the influence of being outdoors.
C. To introduce the trip at the weekend.
3. What does the underlined word “demonstrate” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Improve. B. Give. C. Show.
4. What can help people feel better according to the writer?
A. Putting plants at home. B. Listening to rock music. C. Taking pictures of houses.
5. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To describe personal worry about nature.
B. To share a story about nature with readers.
C. To encourage readers to get close to nature.

Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have estimated (估计) that the world may need about 1 billion new homes by 2050. According to a researcher from MIT, if people use wood to make so many homes, more than three times the size of the Amazon rainforest may be cut. The MIT researchers tried to find other materials to take the place of wood to make house parts. And they found recycled plastic could play a role.
The MIT team discovered that recycled plastic mixed with bits of glass could be used as a new material to make trusses (桁架)—supports put under floors to make sure that the floors can carry the weight of everything on them.
The MIT team wanted to know how much weight the trusses could carry. In a test, they 3D printed four trusses with the new material. Each truss weighed only about 6 kg—lighter than a comparable wooden truss. The team put the four trusses under a wooden floor model and slowly added heavy weights on the floor. Through the test, the team found the four trusses could sustain objects weighing more than 1,800 kg—about the weight of a car. This showed trusses made from the new material were strong enough to be used in house building in America.
The finding may benefit house building a lot. It will be much easier to send house parts made from this new material to different places. What’s more, the researchers say it is possible to bring down the cost of making house parts. The researchers hope that one day they can 3D print more house parts with the new material, so that more used plastic could be turned into something useful.
1. How many new homes may the world need by 2050 according to the MIT researchers?
A. About 1 billion. B. About 2 billion. C. About 3 billion.
2. What is the new material made from?
A. Recycled plastic and glass. B. Recycled plastic and wood. C. Recycled plastic and stone.
3. What does the underlined word “sustain” probably mean in Paragraph 3?
A. Increase. B. Avoid. C. Hold.
4. What can we learn about the 3D-printed trusses in the test?
A. They were big enough to support house floors.
B. They were strong enough for house building.
C. They were small enough to be put in a car.
5. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. 3D Printing Solves Housing Problems

At the beginning of 2025, my New Year's goal was huge. I didn't just want to be better. I wanted to be the best student in my whole grade. To make it happen, I promised myself to study for three more hours every night.
Everything went well at first. I studied hard for a few weeks, trying to memorize each page of the textbooks. My scores went up soon. I was proud of myself. At the same time, I felt tired. However, I kept studying hard until midnight. Actually, I was so sleepy that I couldn't focus on my schoolwork. Slowly, my scores began to drop, like running sand through my fingers. I tried even harder but I didn't do well in the final exam. I was completely lost.
Instead of giving up, I stopped to think: what really went wrong? With the help of my teachers and parents, I realized it wasn't a proper plan in the long run. So, I thought it over and improved the daily plan of 2026. I decided to take a rest every 40 minutes during study hours and not to stay up late. I also tried to use mind-map to review the lessons. I follow this plan step by step and make progress in the new term.
This "roller-coaster journey" tells me that a big goal needs a daily plan you can actually follow. Running a long race too fast only burns you out.
1. What was the writer's New Year's goal of 2025?
A. To make some progress little by little.
B. To be the top student in the whole grade.
C. To do reading for a long time every night.

A. The writer liked playing with sand.
B. The writer thought time went by fast.
C. The writer felt helpless about his scores.
3. Why did the writer think over his plan of 2025?
A. Because he was so proud of himself.
B. Because he found the plan not proper.
C. Because he wanted to memorize the plan.
4. How does the writer make progress in 2026?
A. By managing time better and improving methods.
B. By focusing more on schoolwork and staying up late.
C. By resting for a longer time and taking a roller-coaster.
5. What is the best title for the text?
A. Stay Curious, Stay Young B. Easy Come, Easy Go C. Run Slow, Go Far

The Dragon Boat Festival is a traditional Chinese festival. It falls on the 5th day of the fifth lunar month. A dragon boat race will be held in our city in June. No matter what the result is, we are excited about the race.
I was lucky enough to be chosen for the team of our school last year. Each of us had different levels of fitness in the beginning. When I could only lift 5 kilos for the first time, others could lift 30 already. We cheered ourselves up and always trained together because we were all in the same boat. When we finished practicing, we were proud of our progress.
One day, after fifty minutes of training, I was so tired that I couldn't go on. However, I saw the teammates beside and in front still trying their best to row. So I had to continue going till we reached the end. Pulling together was the most treasured thing we had when we were in the dragon boat.
As our coach, Tim strongly believes that everyone has his or her own talent. All our ability can be brought out as long as it is put in the proper place. We can't afford to lose anyone of our team, or we won't win. When we are rowing, we are a big family. Many hands make light work. Now we are ready for the coming dragon boat race.
1. When will the dragon boat race be held?
A. In May. B. In June. C. In July.
2. What was the writer's situation at first?
A. He was weaker in fitness. B. He was as strong as others. C. He could lift 30 kilos easily.
3. Why did the writer keep on training when he was tired?
A. Because his coach asked him to do so.
B. Because he wanted to win the prize alone.
C. Because his teammates kept trying their best.
4. What does the underlined word "it" refer to?
A. The race. B. The team. C. The talent.
5. What is the best title for the text?
A. Health comes first B. Together, we stand C. Practice makes perfect

One summer day when I was in high school, my father gave me a task to buy some tools for our farm. I loved nothing better than driving our family's truck to do something, but this time I was not so happy, because my father had told me I would have to ask for credit at the store.
Sixteen is such a proud age. Young men at that age want respect but not pity. I had seen many times that my friends were refused when they asked for credit, and I could feel their disappointment and shame. So I knew clearly how difficult it might be for me to ask for a credit. The hot sun beat down heavily, making me feel uneasy.
At the Davy Brothers store, Davy was talking to a farmer. After I finished choosing the things I wanted, I slowly walked over to him. "I need to put these on credit," I said to him, shyly and carefully.
The farmer gave me a kind look, but Davy's face didn't change at all. "No problem," he said in a relaxed voice. "I know your daddy will pay for them in time." Then he turned to the farmer, "This boy is James Williams' son." The farmer nodded to me in a friendly way. I was so proud of my father. "James Williams' son" — these three words opened the door to these adults' respect and trust.
At that moment, I fully understood how valuable my father's good name was. Since then, I have also tried my best to pay attention to my own actions and behaviors.
1. What task did the writer's father give him?
A. To drive a truck. B. To buy some tools. C. To ask for food.
2. How did the writer feel about asking for a credit?
A. Shameful. B. Confident. C. Excited.
3. What did Davy do when the writer asked for credit?
A. He agreed easily. B. He refused immediately. C. He asked the farmer for advice.
4. Why did the writer feel proud of his father?
A. Because the farmer was friendly to the writer.
B. Because his father trusted him and loved him.
C. Because his father had won the villagers' respect.
5. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Some Interesting Farm Tools B. My Hard-working Father C. The Power of a Good Name

Julie didn't realize that she had lost her laptop until she got home. She tried calling the local police, but they could do little because the laptop went missing in a state outside their jurisdiction. Hoping for its return, Julie posted messages on the Internet for help. Although she bought a new laptop, she didn't stop searching.
Coincidentally, Julie's neighbour, Mike, had just bought a used laptop on the Internet. When he heard about Julie's story, he put two and two together. He checked the serial number of the computer carefully and found that it matched Julie's lost laptop. Mike called Julie at once.
Julie was wild with joy when she heard the news. Then, they agreed to meet at a coffee shop, where Mike returned the laptop to Julie without asking for any money, even though he had paid $600 for it. Julie offered to repay him, but Mike refused, saying that the laptop rightfully belonged to her.
Tears filled Julie's eyes. She hadn't thought someone would be so kind and honest. "That's the nicest thing someone has done for me in years and years," she said, "It's something all of us can do. But it's something hard to do."
Mike said he never considered keeping the laptop. "I was really happy to see that she was happy," Mike said, "When we start putting money over people's feelings, that's when things start going south. Sam loved Father's Day as he always spent it happily with his dad. In the past, they went to the park or watched football games together.
On this warm Father's Day morning, Sam woke his dad up happily, and his mum made delicious pancakes for breakfast. They planned to go fishing by the lake or watch a new superhero movie to celebrate. Suddenly, the phone rang. Dad had to go to work right away, and Sam felt upset and a little sad. But then Dad smiled and asked Sam to go along with him.
They drove to a local farm not far from their home. A mother sheep was weak and having trouble giving birth. Dad was a kind animal doctor. He stayed calm, checked the sheep carefully and took good care of her with great patience. After some time, three lovely little lambs were born.

One day in 2006, students at Xavier High School in New York wrote to their favourite writers. They invited the writers to visit the school. Some students wrote to Kurt Vonnegut Jr. (1922–2007), a humorous American writer. Here is Vonnegut's reply:
Dear Xavier High School, thanks for your kind letters! You really know how to cheer up an 84-year-old man in his sunset years. I don't make public appearances anymore because I look just like an iguana now.
What I want to tell you is simple: Practice any kind of art — music, acting, poetry and so on. No matter how well or badly you do it, don't do it for money or fame. Do it to grow, find out what's in your heart, and make your spirit stronger.
Take it seriously! Start right now and keep doing art for the rest of your life. Draw a funny or nice picture of your teacher and share it. Dance home after school, and you can even sing in the shower.
Here's your assignment for tonight (I hope your teacher will not let you pass if you don't do it): Write a six-line poem with similar ending sounds about anything. Try your best, but don't tell anyone about it or show it to anyone. Then tear it into small pieces and throw them into different bins. You'll find this effort is your best reward — you've experienced becoming, learned a lot more about yourself, and enriched your mind.
Good luck to you all! — Kurt Vonnegut Jr., November 5, 2006

Have you noticed how naturally we think of "three" when we talk about numbers? In some ways, "three" is a number that has magical power. We eat three meals a day. Traffic lights all over the world use three colors: red, yellow and green. And there is the rule of three. It is an age-old writing method. According to this rule, articles can always become more satisfying to readers if they come in threes. What makes "three" so magical?
First, the human brain loves to find patterns — things that happen again and again in a regular way. How many times does something at least need to happen before our brain says, "This is really a pattern"? The answer is three. Once can be seen as luck. Twice might still be coincidence. But when it happens three times, we believe it is a real pattern.
Second, our brains can only remember limited information at a time. Audience usually only remember three things from a speech. Do you want something in your speech to stick in your audience's minds? Present it in groups of three.
The rule of three can be used in our daily lives as well. It can make many things easier. For example, many people like to add lots of tasks to their to-do lists. Experts, however, suggest they should list no more than three tasks. The next time we are making New Year's plans, consider listing only three things to work on. The longer our list is, the less likely we are to keep it.
1. How does the writer show "three" has magical powers?
A. By telling a story. B. By giving examples. C. By comparing 3 with other numbers.
2. Which is an example of "a pattern" according to the text?
A. The sun rises in the east every morning.
B. Jack wins the running race for the first time.
C. It rained heavily in Nanning yesterday.
3. What makes "three" so magical according to the text?
A. Its wide use in everyday life.
B. Its special meanings in different cultures.
C. The brain's thinking habit and limited memory.
4. What's the meaning of the underlined sentence?
A. We had better make a shorter to-do list.
B. We should finish the tasks we don't like.
C. New Year's plans are usually hard to follow.
5. What is the purpose of this text?
A. To show "three" is the most important number.
B. To discuss the relationship between cultures and "three".
C. To explain why "three" is magical and show how to use it in life.

Why do some people overcome challenges while others give up? According to Dweck, an American psychologist, people either have a fixed mindset or a growth mindset. Those with a fixed mindset believe that abilities cannot be changed. They may avoid challenges. But those with a growth mindset believe they can improve with effort, and they often push themselves to grow.
Dweck explains that people with a growth mindset are more likely to enjoy learning. They don't see failure as a sign of weakness but as a chance to improve. This way of thinking encourages them to keep trying. Over time, that can lead to better results — not only in school, but also in sports, relationships, and even at work.
So how can you develop this powerful growth mindset? Dweck offers several suggestions. The first one is to pay attention to your self-talk. When you fail, ask yourself how you can do better next time. When you meet something difficult, avoid saying "I'm just not good at this." Instead, say, "I'm not good at this yet." It reminds you that you're still learning and growing.
Another good way is to face challenges bravely. That's the time to keep going. Many successful people kept trying even after failures. They saw hard times as part of their journey, not something to fear.
Finally, Dweck encourages readers to see effort as a good thing, not a weakness. Our culture often praises natural talent. But according to Dweck, it's effort that leads to lasting success. With this mindset, we can all become better learners and better workers. In short, mindset matters.
1. According to the text, what do people with a fixed mindset usually do?
A. They often avoid challenges.
B. They see failure as a chance to learn.
C. They believe they can improve with effort.
2. How do people with a growth mindset see failure?
A. As a sign of weakness. B. As a reason to give up. C. As a chance to improve.
3. What should you say when you find something hard, according to Dweck?
A. "I'm not good at this yet." B. "I'm just not good at this." C. "I'll never be good at this."
4. How does the writer develop Paragraph 4?
A. By giving examples. B. By comparing two ideas. C. By telling a personal story.
5. What's the writing purpose of the text?
A. To explain the differences between two mindsets.
B. To help readers learn about the growth mindset.
C. To advise readers to value effort over natural talent.

一、【2024·广西·真题】
【答案】1. B 2. C 3. A 4. A 5. C

三、【2026·广西·真题】

【答案】1. B 2. A 3. C 4. A 5. C

三、【2026·广西柳州·一模】
