Who doesn’t know Pinocchio? The nose of the wooden puppet (玩偶) grows long when he lies. He is one of the best-known characters in children’s literature. However, the man who brought him to life, Carlo Collodi, is far less famous.
Collodi was born in Florence, Italy. He started working as a writer when he was about 20 years old, writing articles for different newspapers.
He lived during the Italian Risorgimento (意大利统一运动时期) in the 19th century, a period when Italy became an independent country. Collodi tried to help not only as a soldier but also with his words. He started two newspapers and wrote short stories that spoke out against an unfair society.
However, Collodi is best known around the world as a writer for children. His interest in writing for young people began in 1875 when he was translating (翻译) many French fairy tales. These stories made him want to write his own fairy tales as well as textbooks for teaching.
His most famous work, The Adventures of Pinocchio (《木偶奇遇记》) , began as a short story. In 1881, Collodi sent a story about a wooden puppet to a children’s magazine. He described it as “a bit of foolishness” and never thought it would become so popular around the world.
“I don’t think Pinocchio is a bad boy. Instead, I prefer to see him as an ordinary child. His mistakes come from his childish nature,” wrote Mei Zihan, a member of the China Writers Association. “Every child can see themselves in Pinocchio.”

Have you seen people online drinking hot water or practicing slow exercises like Baduanjin? These are part of a new trend (趋势) called “Becoming Chinese”. It started with a funny video by a Chinese-American vlogger. She jokingly told her followers, “Starting tomorrow, you’re going to be Chinese.” Surprisingly, plenty of young people from the US to Europe are getting into copying Chinese daily habits.
So what do these “new Chinese” normally do? They drink hot water instead of cold water. They fill their thermoses (保温杯) with goji berry tea. Some manage to learn traditional practices like calligraphy or kung fu. They say these habits help them deal with stress and negative feelings. One netizen shared that giving up cold water was a good way to solve his stomach problems.
Why is this trend so popular? First, people find Chinese lifestyle healthy and calming. In a fast-paced world, the Chinese way of balance and self-care offers plenty of comfort and reduces worries. It allows them to look on the bright side instead of feeling blue. Second, these videos show a modern China. People see not just pandas or kung fu, but also convenient (便利的) mobile payments and smart home gadgets (智能家电). This clearly breaks old stereotypes. Now they don’t see China like before.
This cultural exchange is driven by ordinary people, not by government. As one American said, “We think being Chinese is cool and healthy.” Even though it started as a joke, this trend has become a joyful way to learn from each other. Proud of their new habits, many say they will keep them in future.
“Becoming Chinese” is not about changing who you are. It’s about trying new, healthy habits. It shows that when a culture improves people’s daily lives, its charm (魅力) can cross borders naturally.
43. Who started the “Becoming Chinese” trend?
A. An American tourist. B. The Chinese government.
C. A Chinese-American vlogger. D. Young people from the US to Europe.
44. What is the main idea of Paragraph 2?
A. Chinese daily habits are very popular.
B. “New Chinese” follow many Chinese daily habits.
C. Drinking hot water is good for stomach problems.
D. Traditional practices help deal with negative feelings.
45. What does the underlined word “stereotypes” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Ideas that people always hold. B. Technologies that make life easier.
C. Videos that show a modern China. D. Lifestyles that are healthy and calming.
46. What is the writer’s main purpose of writing this passage?
A. To ask people to copy Chinese.
B. To compare Chinese and Western lifestyles.
C. To describe how Americans learn Chinese habits.
D. To introduce a new cultural trend and its meaning.
47. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.

38. How does the writer start the passage?
A. By giving an example. B. By listing numbers.
C. By telling the differences. D. By asking a question.
39. Put the events about Collodi into the correct order according to the passage.
a. Collodi wrote The Adventures of Pinocchio.
b. Collodi started working as a writer for newspapers.
c. Collodi began to show interest in writing for children.
d. Collodi helped his country as a soldier and with his words.
A. b-d-c-a B. b-c-a-d C. d-b-a-c D. c-b-d-a
40. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 5 refer to?
A. The short story. B. The wooden puppet.
C. The children’s magazine. D. The textbook for teaching.
41. What can we infer from Mei Zihan’s words in the last paragraph?
A. She thinks Pinocchio is perfect. B. Pinocchio is a badly-behaved boy.
C. Pinocchio doesn’t make mistakes on purpose. D. Children can completely understand Pinocchio.
42. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. The Story of Pinocchio B. A Famous Italian Puppet
C. The Man behind Pinocchio D. How to Write Children’s Books
38. D 39. A 40. A 41. C 42. C
第一段开头以问句“Who doesn’t know Pinocchio?”
第五段中“he described it as ‘a bit of foolishness’”,前文提到“Collodi sent a story about a wooden puppet to a children’s magazine”,因此“it”指代他寄出的那篇“短篇故事”。
第六段梅子涵的表述“His mistakes come from his childish nature”说明匹诺曹的错误源于孩童天性,并非故意犯错。

第二段开头提出问题“So what do these ‘new Chinese’ normally do?”
根据第三段中的“People see not just pandas or kung fu, but also convenient mobile payments and smart home gadgets. This clearly breaks old stereotypes. Now they don’t see China like before.”
