On november thirteenth, in two thousand and twenty three people across kenya took part in the country's first national tree planting holiday. The holiday was created by kenya's president William ruto, as part of a plan to fight the climate crisis. The holiday is to encourage people to plant trees. Kenya is famous for its beautiful forests and wildlife, but large eras of kenya's forests have been cut down, either for the wood to clear the land for farming or both. The government says planting trees will reduce pollution and help protect the country's food and water supply. Kenya has been seriously affected by the climate crisis, the country has been hit by a severe drought, and the areas rain patterns have been changing. For the worse, the government created a special APP to help organize the tree plantings. The APP helps people collect seed dings, find places to plant and record their efforts. The up will also helps the government track how many trees have been planted in different areas around the country. Currently, just seven percent of kenya is covered by trees. Mister ruutu has a goal of planting fifteen billion trees by two thousand and thirty two. He hopes that will help kenya cover thirty percent of its land with trees. Give your reasons. Q2: Who do you think should take responsibility for dealing with climate change? What can we do? While Reading 人教版:选择性必修三 Unit 3 Environmental protection CLIMATE CHANGE REQUIRES THE WORLD'S ATTENTION We have known about climate change for decades. There is little doubt that Earth is getting warmer and warmer (see the graph). A warming ocean and atmosphere along with melting ice and rising sea levels provide evidence of a dramatic change in the global climate. In 2013, a lot of people were shocked by a news photo of a dead polar bear that was found on Norway's Arctic island of Svalbard. According to the scientists who found its dead body, all that remained of the polar bear was "skin and bones". An expert who has studied polar bears for many years said that from the position of its dead body, the bear appeared to have starved and died. Experts claimed that low sea-ice levels caused by climate change meant the bear could not hunt seals as before, so it had to travel greater distances in order to find food. This alarming case showed how the increase in temperature had an impact on Earth's ecology. Then what is causing the increase in the global average surface temperature? Climate scientists often mention a key climate process called the "greenhouse effect", which has two common meanings: the"natural" greenhouse effect and the "man-made" greenhouse effect. The "natural" greenhouse effect refers to the fact that heat from the sun enters the atmosphere and warms Earth's surface as short-wave radiation. The heat is released back into space at longer wave lengths. Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, such as methane and carbon dioxide, trap some of the heat, keeping Earth's climate warm and habitable. Without this process, Earth could not sustain life. However, the "man-made" greenhouse effect has now become a big problem. When people produce huge amounts of extra greenhouse gases by burning fossil fuels, more heat energy is trapped in the atmosphere and causes Earth's surface temperature to rise quickly. There is strong and comprehensive evidence that the rise in temperature has led to an increase in extreme weather and natural disasters worldwide, not only causing serious damage, but also costing human lives. Climate scientists have warned that if we do not take appropriate actions, this warming trend will probably continue and there will be a higher price to pay. In fact, news reports are frequently broadcast about extreme rainstorms and heatwaves causing deaths and economic losses. Continued greenhouse gas emissions will result in further warming and long-lasting changes to the global climate. This requires the attention of people all over the world. Governments need to consider making policies and taking appropriate actions and measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. We as individuals can also reduce our "carbon footprint" by restricting the amount of carbon dioxide our lifestyles produce. It is our responsibility to seize every opportunity to educate everyone about global warming, along with its causes and impacts, because this is the most serious issue affecting all of us on this planet. So what will you do to help? After Reading Understanding the text—A (Read the speech transcript and find the topic sentence for each paragraph.) Paragraph Main Idea Para 1 A. This method, called assisted migration (迁徙), is meant to save these animals from rising temperatures and habitat (栖息地) loss. A recent example is the moving of the Tristram’s storm-petrel (海燕), a seabird that usually lives on low islands in Hawaii and Japan. Its main nesting place, Tern Island, is only 1.8 meters high and is being worn away by the sea. So, about 40 young birds were taken 800 kilometers away to Oahu. Biologist Erie VanderWerf of Pacific Rim Conservation said that climate change is making such actions more necessary. The hope is that one day, these birds can be brought back to their original home if the environment becomes better. This new way of protecting animals is becoming more accepted. There is a plan to change the Endangered Species Act to make it easier to move the most at-risk species to new places. Because of this, officials and scientists have named some animals and plants that might be moved, such as Florida’s Key deer, the Karner blue butterfly, and some desert plants and lizards. However, not everyone agrees with this plan. Some lawmakers say that putting new species into different ecosystems can cause problems we don’t expect, like creating invasive (入侵的) species or harming the environment in unknown ways. This discussion shows a big change in how we think about protecting nature. Jason McLachlan, a biologist at the University of Notre Dame, says this is a basic change in our way of saving species. Because climate change is forcing animals to move quickly, the idea of what is “native” is being questioned. In the past, climate changes happened very slowly, over thousands of years, so animals and plants had time to get used to them. But now, the change is too fast for many ecosystems. 20.Why were the storm-petrels moved to Oahu? A.The weather was too cold. B.Their home was in danger. C.Scientists needed to study them. D.Too many petrels lived on Tern Island. 21.What can we know about Florida’s Key deer? A.They live on high mountains. B.They are under good protection. C.They may be moved to new places. D.They are brought back to their home. 22.What is the lawmakers’ concern about the assisted migration? A.It costs too much money. B.It will change the existing laws. Passage B Faced with the growing dangers of climate change, scientists are thinking about a new plan: Moving animals in danger to new homes far from their old ones. C.It can bring about more habitat loss. D.It may lead to unexpected problems. 23.What is Jason’s attitude to the assisted migration? A.Unfriendly. B.Uncertain. C.Supportive. D.Cautious.
