It was raining heavily. I was late for a meeting in a nearby city that I knew only by GPS, and my phone died. I couldn’t find out how to get there or how to reach my friends.
I stopped at a McDonald’s and walked up to a mother and her daughter. “I’m sorry,” I said. “Do you mind if I make a call with your phone? I need to let my friends know I’m lost.” She handed me her phone and said I was lucky to make the last call—she was about to stop using it because she couldn’t pay her phone bill.
Using her phone, I got in touch with my friends. As I made the call, the young girl and her mother held each other and talked. After returning the phone, I went directly to the counter and ordered a meal for the mother and her daughter. Before leaving, I took out all the money left in my wallet and put it into the mother’s hand, then quickly turned to go. When I walked through the doors, I heard the mother crying. Her daughter called after me, “You have no idea how you just helped us.”
That day, I learned helping each other gets us through. She gave her last call; I gave what I had. Kindness saves both the giver and the receiver.

What makes a team successful? In fact, teamwork isn’t just about working together—it’s about working together the right way.
A clear goal is the first step to good teamwork. Everyone should know what they are working for, or team members will get confused and waste time on the wrong things. A shared purpose helps people stay focused and work together.
In a successful team, everyone takes responsibility for their roles. A group works best when each member understands their task and takes it seriously. People complete their work on time and do their best to support the group. If everyone does their part well, the whole team can move forward quickly.
△ Create space for all the members to speak. Even the quietest person needs a chance to share their ideas, just like the loudest one. When every idea is heard, it builds trust and helps the group come up with better ideas.
Last but not least, build a team with psychological (心理的) safety. In safe teams, no one is afraid of making mistakes. All the team members can ask questions, learn from mistakes, and try new things without worrying about being laughed at.
38. What does the underlined word “confused” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Unable to think clearly. B. Quick to notice problems.

“The best way to know the unknown is to go there, experience it and feel it with your heart,” Du Mengran told Nature. Du, a deep-sea scientist, played a key role in the discovery of the world’s deepest-known animal ecosystem (生态系统). She was named in Nature’s list of 10 people who helped shape science in 2025.
38-year-old Du has been diving (潜水) since 2016. In 2024, she led a team on 24 dives in the northern Pacific Ocean and found a new ecosystem there. Instead of sunlight, it gets energy from chemicals, like CH4, that come out of the ocean floor. “We used to think nothing could live in such difficult conditions,” Du told Wenhui Daily.
Diving in the sea can be challenging. High water pressure is a problem. The water pressure at the bottom of the ocean can be about 1,000 times what we experience at sea level. Seasickness (晕船) is also a challenge. “When I heard I was named one of Nature’s 10, I couldn’t even bring myself to celebrate because I was too worried about my team being seasick,” Du said.
However, deep-sea exploration makes it possible to answer many questions, like how life first began on Earth. For Du, this makes all the hard work meaningful.
41. What is Du Mengran’s research about?
A. Solar energy. B. Air pressure. C. Diving skills. D. Deep-sea science.
42. When did Du and her team discover the new ecosystem?
A. In 1987. B. In 2016. C. In 2024. D. In 2025.
43. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Difficulties Du’s team faces. B. Findings of Du’s research.
C. Reasons for Du’s exploration. D. Questions Du wants to answer.
44. What is the best title for the text?
A. Secrets of the Sunlight B. Into the Deep Unknown
C. How Life Began on Earth D. Having Fun through Diving

The man knew what was going on. He looked into my dad’s eyes, held my dad’s hand in his and took the $20 bill. With a tear in his eye, he said, “Thank you, sir.”

Dear Mike,
You asked about our Helping Hand Club. Let me share what we did last year.
First, we focused on helping others. We helped our classmates with their schoolwork and gave them useful advice on improving relationships. Second, we served our school by supporting various school events, such as the sports meeting. We worked as volunteers to make sure everything went well. Finally, protecting nature was also an important part of our club. We planted trees and picked up rubbish in the local park. Through these activities, we not only helped others but also learned a lot. We truly made a difference in the world!
What stories do you have from your clubs? I’m looking forward to your reply.
