Have you ever wondered what baby animals truly need? Is food enough? A baby monkey named Punch helps us find the answer.
Punch is a young macaque (猕猴) at a zoo in Japan. His mother left him, and other monkeys refused to play with him. The zookeepers gave him a soft toy. To everyone’s surprise, Punch hugged the toy tightly and treated it as his mother.
Punch’s story is very similar to a famous psychology experiment (心理实验) from the 1950s. An American scientist named Harlow did a study with baby monkeys. He gave them two fake “mothers”. One was made of cold wires (铁丝) but could provide food. The other was soft and warm, but had no food. At that time, people believed that babies should love the mother that fed them. ______. The baby monkeys spent most of their time hugging the soft mother. They only went to the wire mother when they were hungry. This experiment showed that warmth, comfort, and love were even more important than food.
Harlow’s findings changed how we understand child development. They teach us that babies need more than just food. They need care, kindness and safety. This is called “attachment theory (依恋理论).” A safe attachment helps a child grow up healthily and confidently.
Therefore, from this experiment we learn that love and warmth are not just nice to have. They are necessary for life and healthy growth.
31. Why does the writer mention Punch’s story in the beginning?
A. To introduce the lovely animals. B. To lead into the psychology experiment.
C. To explain how lonely baby monkeys are. D. To show how zookeepers care for small monkeys.
32. What does the underlined word “fake” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. False. B. Patient. C. Selfless. D. Terrible.
33. What can be put in “______” in Paragraph 3?
A. But what we thought was right. B. So they went to the wire mother.
C. But that was not what Harlow found. D. Yet something unusual satisfied the scientist.
34. What can we learn from Harlow’s experiment?
A. Food is the only thing baby animals need. B. Warmth and love are necessary for healthy growth.
C. Baby monkeys don’t need their real mothers. D. Soft toys are better than real mothers.
35. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Love Matters More Than Food B. Food in Child Development
C. Young Monkeys and Their Need D. Soft Mother and Wire Mother
31. B 32. A 33. C 34. B 35. A
根据第三段中的“Punch’s story is very similar to a famous psychology experiment from the 1950s.”
根据第三段中的“He gave them two fake ‘mothers’. One was made of cold wires but could provide food.”
根据第三段“people believed that babies should love the mother that fed them… The baby monkeys spent most of their time hugging the soft mother”,人们原有认知和实验结果相反,此处用转折,说明那不是哈洛的发现。
根据第三段中的“This experiment showed that warmth, comfort, and love were even more important than food.”以及最后一段“Therefore, from this experiment we learn that love and warmth are not just nice to have. They are necessary for life and healthy growth.”
文章通过Punch的故事引出Harlow的实验,最后得出结论“… love and warmth are not just nice to have. They are necessary for life and healthy growth.”,即爱和温暖比食物更重要,所以A选项最能概括文章主旨。

固定结构not…but…
固定搭配a language of friendship,介词of表所属关系,意为“属于……

Topic: What is the most important for improving your learning efficiency (效率) ?
Studying is part of the road to success and the key to getting good grades in school. So knowing how to make your learning more efficient is very important. Different students hold different opinions.
I think the study environment is the most important. I’d like to study in a place that is quiet, a little warm, but not too comfortable. Take studying at home as an example. The study space could be a corner of your room with a desk and a chair, or even a kitchen table. Wherever you can focus without being too comfortable is great!
——Lin Tao (16) , Shenzhen
For me, getting enough sleep is the most important. I always set a bedtime that allows me to sleep for 8-10 hours every night so that my mind can have a good rest. Good sleep helps with good learning. Also, we should stick to the same bedtime every night.
——Li Ting (17) , Guangzhou
Sometimes, I waste too much time and energy on my smartphone. Therefore, in my opinion, turning off my smartphone, leaving it in a different room, or putting it on “Do Not Disturb” mode (免打扰模式) is the most important. In this way, I don’t waste time receiving or replying to any texts.
——Chen Hui (15) , Dongguan
Turning on bright lights is most important if I am studying late at night. Bright lights can help keep my brain awake. Rather than reading in a dark room, which can make me comfortable and sleepy, I light up my study area to get my brain into thinking it’s still daytime.
