You are going to watch part of the film The Million Pound Bank Note.
Look at these photos and guess what happens in the film.
Henry is eating. He seems quite hungry, but also
quite happy to be eating such a large meal.
The waiter seems quite angry. Perhaps Henry does not have enough money to pay the bill.
Both the waiter and Henry are in a state of shock.
The waiter is looking at a piece of paper.
Is this the million-pound bank note?
Henry is leaving, and everyone is treating him like he is a king. Even though his back is turned to us, he still looks unsure.
Describe people’s changing attitudes in a film clip
Watch the film clip and check if you are correct. Then discuss the questions.
1. Why does the owner of the restaurant want Henry to sit somewhere else?
2. What does Henry order? Why is the waiter surprised?
3. Why does the owner think Henry hesitates to pay the bill?
4. Why does the owner think the bank note is probably real?
5. What happens in the end?
1. Why does the owner of the restaurant want Henry to sit somewhere else?
Since Henry is poorly dressed, the owner of the restaurant does not want him to sit in the middle of the room where everyone can see him.
2. What does Henry order? Why is the waiter surprised?
Henry orders ham and eggs, a nice big juicy steak with all the trimmings, and a tall tankard of ale — twice. The waiter is surprised that Henry eats so much food.
3. Why does the owner think Henry hesitates to pay the bill?
The owner thinks Henry does not have the money to pay.
4. Why does the owner think the bank note is probably real?
Because no one would get into trouble to forge a bill of such a high amount—it would be crazy.
5. What happens in the end?
All the people in the restaurant think Henry is an eccentric millionaire and the owner let him leave without having to pay the bill.
Can you use some words to describe people's changing attitudes towards Henry?

After leaving the brother's home, Henry went to a small restaurant. He was about to sit down at a table when the restaurant owner showed him to a different seat because he was dressed poorly and the restaurant owner did not want others to see him. Henry then ordered a large meal.
After he was finished, he ordered the same meal again, because he was very hungry. The waiter was surprised and told the restaurant owner. This made the restaurant owner worried that he could not pay the bill. Later, when Henry finished eating, he hesitated to pay the bill. This made the restaurant owner quite angry. Then Henry opened the envelope, expecting to find some money to pay the bill. Henry, and all the people in the restaurant were shocked to see that it was a million-pound bank note. The restaurant owner decided that the note must be real, and that Henry was an eccentric millionaire. In the end, the restaurant owner let him leave without paying anything.

Film scripts for reference:
Owner: That one’s reserved. This way, please. (To a waiter.) Take this gentleman’s order, Horace.
Henry: Can I have some ham and eggs, and a nice big juicy steak with all the trimmings? And make it extra thick.
Horace: It’d cost a tidy bit.
Henry: That’s understood. And a long, cool tankard of ale. (After finishing what he ordered.)Uh, waiter. Same thing again, please.
Horace: Again?
Henry: That’s right. And fill that up. Anything wrong?
Horace: No. No, sir.(He goes to the owner.) He’s asked for another portion. Ale and all.
Owner: You think he can pay?
Maggie: We’ll have to chance it.
Owner: Serve him, Horace. But don’t spare the gristle!
Horace: Hams, eggs, steak, potatoes, beans, carrots, twice, trifle, cheese, coffee, two quarts of ale... three and ten pence.
Henry: Thank you. Would you mind waiting just a few minutes?
Horace: What’s there to wait for?
Owner: Alright, Horace.
Henry: That was a wonderful meal. You know, uh, it’s amazing how much pleasure you get out of the simple things if you have to get along without them for a while.
Owner: Very interesting. And now perhaps if you’d pay the bill I could attend to the other customers.
Henry: That clock of yours, is it correct?
Owner: If anything, it’s fast.
Henry: (To himself) Oh, it’s fast. (To owner) How fast?
Old man: Two minutes.
Henry: Oh, thank you.
Owner: Now, I don’t wish to be unpleasant, but would you please settle the bill?
Henry: I want to, but you see...
Owner: The bill, please.
Henry: Yes, I know. The bill.
Owner: Exactly.
Henry: Well, I don’t suppose a couple of minutes will make any difference.
(After opening the envelope) I, I am awfully sorry but... I don’t have anything smaller.
Owner: (After getting the bank note from Henry) Well, uh, just one minute.
(He shows the bank note to his wife.) Maggie, look!
Maggie: Ah!
Owner: Do you think it’s real?
Maggie: Ask Mr Clemens.
Owner: Mr Clemens, Mr Clemens!
Mr Clemens: What is it!
Owner: Would you mind just looking at this? Do you think it’s genuine?
Mr Clemens: Two notes of this denomination have been issued. But in any case,
it’s hardly likely to be a forgery.
Maggie: Why not?
Mr Clemens: It would draw too much attention to the owner. No forger would want that.
Maggie: But, (look at the owner) Mr Clemens, he's in rags.
Mr Clemens: I can only assume he's an eccentric millionaire.
Owner: An eccentric millionaire!
Maggie: And you put him at the back of the room! Go and attend to him at once!
Owner: I'm sorry, sir, but I cannot change the note.
Henry: But it's all I have on me.
Owner: Oh, oh, please don't worry, sir. It's of no consequence, no consequence at all. We are most gratified that you should so much as set foot inside our little establishment. Indeed, sir, I trust you will come here whenever you're seeking peace and quiet.
Henry: Oh, that's very good of you.
Owner: Good, sir? It's good of you, sir! You must come whenever you want and have whatever you like. The mere honour of your presence is a reward in itself.
Henry: I may not be passing this way for quite a while.
Owner: It would be a very poor thing, sir, if I couldn't trust a gentleman as rich as yourself, sir, even if you do play larks upon the public in the matter of dress. As for the bill, sir, please forget it. It's of no consequence, no consequence at all.
Henry: Thank you very much then. That's very nice of you.
Owner: Oh, it's for us to thank you, sir. And I do, sir, from the bottom of my heart.
