I first fell in love with acupuncture (针灸) when I realized that it could be a cure for a migraine, a very bad headache that often makes you unable to bear strong light. Before I discovered acupuncture, I tried everything for migraines. Eventually, my battle with migraines started to affect my studies and my relationships with my husband and friends. I couldn’t focus or get my work done. Nothing worked permanently. That was when I decided to give acupuncture a shot.
It took a few acupuncture sessions for me to start to notice gradual differences. In time, after following my treatment plan strictly, I went from having migraines more than half the days out of the month to just one or two migraines a month. I noticed I was having improvement with other symptoms as well.
As I started to see improvement in my own health, I realized there was so much more to this approach to health and curing than just acupuncture. I started to learn about the Chinese Medicine ideas behind the acupuncture treatments and became attracted to the idea of Qi, or energy, and how it is affected by the seasons, diet, and more. It was my own health journey that eventually led me to my pursuit of my master’s degree in Chinese Medicine in 2014.
When my patients come in for their first consultation, many are not aware of all of the potential benefits available to them beyond a simple acupuncture treatment. As a practitioner (执业者) in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), it is my job to listen, determine the range of the problem, educate and create a treatment plan for my patients. What I love about my career is that I have the opportunity to share a number of treatment options including acupuncture, cupping, and dietary recommendations, as well as little at-home tips that make a world of difference.
4. Why did the author try acupuncture?
A. Her quality of life declined. B. Her husband and friends advised her to try it.
C. She was unable to bear bright light. D. She had known its benefits before migraines.
5. What do we know about the acupuncture treatment?
A. It erased the author’s migraines. B. It involved complex treatment plans.
C. It worked gradually but effectively. D. It was closely based on the idea of Qi.
6. What did acupuncture bring to the author?
A. A higher academic degree. B. A firm decision to study medicine.
C. A reputation for treating migraines. D. An interest in Chinese medicine.
7. Which of the following best describes the author as a TCM practitioner?
A. Caring but cautious. B. Attentive and considerate.
C. Strict but encouraging. D. Knowledgeable and experienced.

A British friend told me he couldn't understand why Chinese people love eating sunflower seeds as a snack so much. “I’ve met a lot of older Chinese and many have a crack in their front teeth; I believe that’s from cracking the seeds,” he said.
I had never noticed the habit, but once he mentioned it, I suddenly became more aware. I realized that whenever I’m watching TV or typing a report, I always start mindlessly cracking sunflower seeds. My friend doesn’t like sunflower seeds, and, to him, it seems unnecessary to work so much just to get one small seed.
When we were young, the whole family would usually get together for Chinese New Year. Then, we all lived close to one another, usually in a small city, and sometime even neighbors would go door-to-door on Chinese New Year’s Eve to check out what every household was making.
I remember my parents would be in the kitchen cooking. Out in the living room, a large table would already be laid out, complete with fancy tablecloth, ready-made dumpling fillings, and dishes full of candy, fruits and sunflower seeds.
Some of the dishes were to be offered to our ancestors later, while others were for neighbors and children to eat before the evening feast. I must have learned how to crack sunflower seeds back then.
I don’t think it’s right to criticize one’s choice in food or eating habits, no matter how strange they may seem.
It’s not only in China. When I went abroad, I found people had all sorts of strange habits when it came to food. In Denmark, they put salted red fish on bread and eat it for dinner, no matter how much it ruins your breath. They think it’s a delicacy, and it’s connected to their culture. I think it’s a wonderful tradition.

A. The traditions of celebrating it disappear.
B. Children can eat delicious food on that day.
C. The families get together for it.
D. Eating sunflower seeds is related to it.
10. The writer’s attitude to Denmark’s way of eating bread is _______.
A. acceptable B. critical C. neutral D. doubtful
11. What lesson can we learn from the story?
A. One kind of food doesn’t necessarily suit everyone.
B. Eating habits come from a certain culture.
C. It is good to form healthy eating habits.
D. Changing your eating habits will change your life.

Are you a social media addict? Are you always checking your smart phone to see how many “likes” you’ve received for your latest post? Maybe you feel comforted by the sound that someone has sent you a message?
Don’t worry, you’re not alone. We check our phones an average of 150 times a day, and around 30% of the total time spent online is devoted to social media. Some experts now fear this habit could be damaging our mental health.
This is something particularly bothering young adults, according to a study from the University of Pittsburgh. It found the more they used social media, the more likely they were to be depressed. In tests, those people who checked social media frequently were 2.7 times more likely to be depressed compared to those who spent most of their time generally surfing the Internet, who had just 1.7 times the risk.
Some of us certainly feel sad when we’re ignored on social media sites, or when we see someone else having a better time than us. But depression is a more serious condition and clinical psychologist, Abigael San, recently told the BBC that, “It’s a real issue, and it’s been getting significantly worse over the last 5-6 years. You can get so hooked that it takes you away from your real relationships.” However, Abigael does admit that social media is more likely to worsen pre-existing issues than directly cause them.
Other research by the University of Glasgow found that teenagers are affected by the 24-hour demands of their social media accounts. It found that those with higher levels of emotional investment in social media, and who use it at night, were more likely to feel depressed and anxious.
Despite these warning signs, why do some of us continue to keep clicking? Well, I suppose we all want to be liked and we don’t want to miss out on a conversation that’s taking place online. But we need to know when to switch off our virtual online world and connect with the real world instead.
12. Who is more likely to be depressed according to the study?
A. People checking social media frequently.
B. People surfing the Internet regularly.
C. People receiving a few “likes” for their posts.
D. People longing for more messages.
13. Why does the author give a quote from Abigael San in Para. 4?
A. To introduce the coming topic.
B. To give a more supporting example.
C. To stress the importance of social media.
D. To explain the cause of a social media addict.
14. Why do people get addicted to social media according to the author?
A. Because they have more time and money.
B. Because the virtual world is much more attractive.
C. Because they want to attract more attention.
D. Because emotional investment in social media benefits them.
15. What’s the passage mainly about?
A. It’s common for teenagers to be a social addict.
B. Using smart phones does harm to people’s health.
C. It’s better to stay away from virtual online world.
D. Social media addiction contributes to depression.
A 13. B 14. C 15. D

Some of us certainly feel sad when we’re ignored on social media sites, or when we see someone else having a better time than us.
Are you always checking your smart phone to see how many “likes” you’ve received for your latest post? Well, I suppose we all want to be liked and we don’t want to miss out on a conversation that’s taking place online.

My journey with skateboarding began in 1975, and I was immediately hooked (吸引). For my 11th birthday, my father bought me my first board. It had cheap clay wheels that shook, bumped and made much noise. ____16____ This early experience taught me that passion isn’t about having the best equipment, but about the feeling it gives you.
Soon enough, I found myself reading every issue of Skateboarder, a popular magazine back then, and our neighborhood was full of kids skating together. ____17____ The sense of shared freedom was transformative, especially for someone who never stood out at traditional team sports.
____18____ At one point, a friend who was a student at York, north of the city, suggested we try the tunnels at the university. Yet, we found them closed, which only pushed me to explore other places — empty parking lots, quiet office parks, and smooth pathways. The joy I got from these experiences never left me.
As I grew older, my relationship with skateboarding matured. I created a website called SkateGeezer dedicated to skaters who had ridden in the 1960s, 70s and 80s. ____19____ From there, I eventually built a career in publishing at skateboarding magazines.
Now, with a family of my own, that passion rides on. I introduced all my children to skateboarding almost as soon as they could walk. The full-circle moment of seeing my sons surpass my own ability is a pride unlike any other. I know some journeys, when you stick with them, don’t end. ____20____
A. I realized I needed much better equipment.
B. They just find new, beautiful paths forward.
C. It inspired me to write a book, The Concrete Wave.

下文“At one point, a friend who was a student at York, north of the city, suggested we try the tunnels at the university.(有一次,一个在城北约克大学读书的朋友建议我们去试试大学里的隧道)”提到了大学相关内容。
上文“I created a website called SkateGeezer dedicated to skaters who had ridden in the 1960s, 70s and 80s.(我创建了一个名为SkateGeezer的网站,专门为那些在20世纪60年代、70年代和80年代滑过滑板的人服务)”说明作者创建了相关滑板网站。
上文“I know some journeys, when you stick with them, don’t end.(我知道有些旅程,只要你坚持下去,就不会结束)”说明作者认为热爱的旅程不会结束。

“promise to do sth.” 故填to reward。
故填who/that。
故填was found。
故填of。
故填the。

How is everything going? It’s been a while since I started my academic life here as an exchange student, but I’m still in great appreciation of what you have done for me on the very first day of my enrollment.
As a freshman in a totally alien environment, I had to carry luggage loaded with bedding stuff as well as a bag full of daily supplies. Then came your timely assistance, which saved me a lot of energy. What’s more, on the way to the dormitory, but for your accurate guidance and precise introduction to different areas around, I would have already been lost in such a vast campus.

It was a relatively calm day in the fishing village of Kalk Bay near Cape Town. Tongai Matandirotya was working his shift as a bartender at the Brass Bell Restaurant. The atmosphere was relaxing, with customers chatting and the gentle sound of waves from the nearby Atlantic Ocean providing a pleasant atmosphere. Several people were walking by the window of Brass Bell looking out to the water. Tongai was in the middle of pouring a drink for a customer when suddenly, chaos erupted. The scene changed dramatically.
A massive wild wave charged towards the shore, washing away everything in its path. People near the water’s edge were caught completely off-guard and swept into the sea by the wave. Among them were 37-year-old Clair Gardiner and her 8-year-old daughter Arya van Hilten. Clair knew they were being pulled into the water as soon as the wave rushed over them, and she managed to wrap her arms around little Arya.
Tongai’s eyes widened in horror at the sight. Without hesitation, he dropped the drink he was pouring, his mind focused only on saving the lives in danger. He rushed outside, tearing off his belt as he ran. The waves were strong, but Tongai’s resolve was stronger. He dived into the water, the coldness of the ocean shocking his body. As he swam towards the struggling pair, the waves threw him about, but he kept going. When he reached them, the violence of the waves, even just a few meters from shore, had pulled Clair and Arya apart. Tongai quickly used his belt to secure Arya and swam back towards the shore with all his strength.
Once Arya was safely on the shore, Tongai’s muscles burned with tiredness. Every breath was a struggle, but he knew he couldn’t leave Clair behind. Without a second thought, he turned and swam back into the waves. The sea seemed to fight him even harder but he was determined.

With one final burst of strength, he managed to pull Clair to safety. Breaths of relief and cries of joy filled the air. Clair and Arya were reunited in a tearful embrace, their joy and relief overflowing. Clair grasped Tongai’s hands tightly, her eyes full of gratitude, unable to find the right words. Tongai, tired as he was, managed a weak smile. Villagers brought warm blankets and helped the three of them to safety. The previously violent sea now touched gently at the shore, as if in respect for the heroism that had just happened.
Soon an article titled Heroism by the Sea was posted on the website. It detailed Tongai’s brave actions during the day. The post instantly became very popular, with likes and shares increasing rapidly within moments. Comments flooded in, from local villagers to people from afar. Everyone praised Tongai’s selfless courage, calling him a true hero. Brass Bell also commented, expressing pride in having such an outstanding employee. People from all over came to the Brass Bell, eager to meet the heroic bartender and hear the story straight from the source. Tongai, however, remained humble, insisting he had merely followed his natural reactions in the face of danger.

C
8. What did the writer become aware of?
A. She had ever typed a report about seeds.
B. She ate various snacks while watching TV.
C. She had a habit of cracking sunflower seeds.
D. She damaged her teeth by eating sunflower seeds.
9. What does the writer prove by mentioning Chinese New Year?
D

B. They just find new, beautiful paths forward.
C. It inspired me to write a book, The Concrete Wave.
D. That was when I decided to quit and try other sports.
E. Yet, none of that mattered when I felt the freedom of the ride.
F. We built skating tracks and spent hours riding down driveways.
G. In 1983, my skateboard accompanied me to university in Toronto.
