For the two-week summer program, I chose to focus on a biology project. My research centered on investigating the presence and impact of bacteria in different water sources, specifically comparing wild lake water with home pool water to determine which was more harmful. This topic interested me because it combined both environmental science and public health, two topics I’m deeply passionate about.
The laboratory work was challenging but extremely rewarding. I remember the first day I set out to collect water samples (样本). The lake was peaceful, but beneath the calm surface hid something far less harmless. In contrast, the pool’s crystal-clear water seemed almost too clean, and I wondered how the tests would turn out.
Back in the lab, I analyzed the samples. The process involved culturing the bacteria, monitoring their growth and comparing the results from both sources. When the data finally came in, it was both shocking and enlightening. The lake water, despite its beautiful appearance, was full of bacteria—definitely not safe for drinking. On the other hand, the pool water was surprisingly clean, with hardly any bacteria present. These results highlighted the importance of water sanitation (卫生) and the hidden dangers that untreated water can pose.
Once my experiments were completed, I poured all my energy into writing a detailed report. I wanted to make sure that my findings were clear and accurate to convey the significance of the research. On the last day of the seminar, I had the opportunity to present my work to a group of 15 mentors. Standing before them, explaining my project, I felt proud—I was not just a student; I was like a scientist sharing my discoveries with the world.
4. How did the author think of the wild lake water at the beginning?
A. Harmless. B. Challenging. C. Beautiful. D. Clean.
5. What was the first step of the research?
A. Culturing the bacteria. B. Monitoring their growth.
C. Comparing the results. D. Collecting water samples.
6. What does the underlined word “enlightening” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Ever-lasting. B. Educational. C. Interesting. D. Life-changing.
7. What lesson does the author’s experience show?
A. Seeing is not believing. B. Practice makes perfect.
C. Still waters run deep. D. Easier said than done.
C 5. D 6. B 7. A
根据第二段“The lake was peaceful, but beneath the calm surface hid something far less harmless. (湖面平静如镜,但在这宁静的水面之下,却隐藏着远非无害之物)”和第三段“The lake water, despite its beautiful appearance, was full of bacteria—definitely not safe for drinking.(湖水尽管看起来很漂亮,但却充满了细菌——绝对不能安全饮用)”可知,作者一开始认为湖水是漂亮的,故选C。

根据第三段“The lake water, despite its beautiful appearance, was full of bacteria—definitely not safe for drinking. On the other hand, the pool water was surprisingly clean, with hardly any bacteria present. These results highlighted the importance of water sanitation (卫生) and the hidden dangers that untreated water can pose.(尽管湖水外表美丽,却充满了细菌——显然不适合饮用。而另一方面,泳池水却干净得出奇,几乎检测不到任何细菌。这些结果凸显了水处理卫生的重要性,以及未经处理的水可能带来的潜在危害)”可知,研究结果凸显了水处理卫生的重要性,以及未经处理的水可能带来的潜在危害,因此结果是既令人震惊又颇具启发性。enlightening的意思是“予以人启迪的”,和Educational意思相近,故选B。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“When the data finally came in, it was both shocking and enlightening. The lake water, despite its beautiful appearance, was full of bacteria—definitely not safe for drinking. On the other hand, the pool water was surprisingly clean, with hardly any bacteria present. These results highlighted the importance of water sanitation (卫生) and the hidden dangers that untreated water can pose.(当数据最终出炉时,既令人震惊又颇具启发性。 故选A。
C
On my first day at my current job, I came to work expecting a friendly welcome — but I was met with silence. After a quick introduction to the business manager, I was told where to get my ID and then left to figure the rest out on my own. I clearly remember walking into my first departmental meeting, eager to meet my colleagues, only for the boss to skip over introducing me completely. Not really the type of environment that inspires a feeling of belonging.
The primary loneliness stuck with me. Instead of waiting for the workplace culture to change, I decided to create my own sense of community. I started a lunch group, which grew into a regular coffee hour. I invited new hires to join informal meetups, promoting connections before and after department meetings. Over time, this small, self-made network became my spirit support at work. But what if I hadn’t built that community myself?
Chances are that I would have left the job. Increasingly, researchers are realizing that developing a sense of belonging is critical for workforce stability. Historically, studies on supporting workforce stability have focused on more basic factors like pay, hours, and workload. These are all important qualities that cannot be overlooked. But they are not enough.
You must have heard of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. The theory suggests lower-level needs must be met before you can progress to higher-level needs. At the base of Maslow’s hierarchy, physiological and safety needs must be met. This is where fundamentals like pay, hours, and workplace safety would fall. Just above that is the need for love and belonging. In a workplace, this translates to a sense of connection and feeling like part of the team.
According to Maslow’s theory, it’s impossible to be the best version of ourselves without meeting these fundamental needs. So although, yes, being paid fairly is important, to motivate employees to operate at their highest level, you need to create an environment where people feel they truly matter.
8. What did the writer experience on the first day of his new job?
A. A hearty reception from colleagues. B. Thorough guidance at the workplace.
C. Emotional distance between coworkers. D. Brief training from the business manager.
9. What is the writer’s purpose of starting a lunch group?
A. Establishing a regular break time. B. Building up a shared identity.
C. Passing on the workplace culture. D. Conducting meetings during meals.
10. Why does the writer introduce Maslow’s theory?
A. To describe an ideal working environment. B. To discuss spiritual role in job satisfaction.
C. To suggest an effective management method. D. To explain factors to keeping the workforce.
11. What does the last paragraph imply for a workplace?
A. Basic demands are equal to emotional needs. B. Fair payment is the core of staff motivation.
C. A culture of belonging develops staff’s potential. D. Basic needs make the best versions of staff.
C 9. B 10. D 11. C

After a quick introduction to the business manager, I was told where to get my ID and then left to figure the rest out on my own. I clearly remember walking into my first departmental meeting, eager to meet my colleagues, only for the boss to skip over introducing me completely. Not really the type of environment that inspires a feeling of belonging.(在我现在这份工作的第一天,我期待着友好的欢迎,结果迎接我的却是沉默。
根据第二段“The primary loneliness stuck with me. Instead of waiting for the workplace culture to change, I decided to create my own sense of community. I started a lunch group, which grew into a regular coffee hour. I invited new hires to join informal meetups, promoting connections before and after department meetings. Over time, this small, self - made network became my spirit support at work.(最初的孤独感一直伴随着我。我没有等待职场文化改变,而是决定自己营造一种群体归属感。我发起了一个午餐小组,后来发展成定期的咖啡时间。我邀请新员工参加非正式聚会,在部门会议前后增进联系。随着时间推移,这个小的、自己构建的社交圈成为我工作中的精神支柱)”可知,作者发起午餐小组是为了营造归属感,建立一种共同的身份认同。故选B项。
【10题详解】

But they are not enough.(很有可能我就辞职了。
根据最后一段“According to Maslow’s theory, its impossible to be the best version of ourselves without meeting these fundamental needs. So although, yes, being paid fairly is important, to motivate employees to operate at their highest level, you need to create an environment where people feel they truly matter.(根据马斯洛的理论,如果不满足这些基本需求,我们就不可能成为最好的自己。所以,虽然公平薪酬很重要,但要激励员工发挥出最高水平,你需要营造一种让人们觉得自己真正重要的环境)”可知,在工作场所,归属感文化能激发员工潜力。故选C项。
D
As the old saying goes, we can’t manage what we can’t measure. And this rings especially true when it comes to conservation. Trying to measure biodiversity is a critical part of WWF’s conservation work.
Camera traps are one of the primary tools we use to collect data on biodiversity. We are all familiar with the powerful images of wildlife that camera traps can shoot. But what you may not realize is that behind every one of those beautiful photos, we also collect thousands of photos without any animals at all. So WWF joined forces with other conservation organizations and Google to develop a better way to manage camera trap data called Wildlife Insights.
Wildlife Insights is an online platform that uses artificial intelligence to automatically filter out all those annoying blank images, find the ones that contain wildlife, and identify which species is in a photo, even if it’s just the end of a tail or the tip of a nose! Wildlife Insights is currently able to identify 1,300 different species.
With the help of tools like Wildlife Insights, information is now getting into the hands of decision-makers more quickly, which is critical for species like the endangered greater glider (大袋鼯). A third of their habitat burned in the disastrous bush fires that swept through Australia in 2020, including their tree hollows, which can take up to 250 years to form. As an emergency measure, WWF-Australia and partners quickly set up artificial nest boxes and monitored them using cameras, unsure whether the gliders would move into their new modern homes.
But after analyzing the photos in Wildlife Insights, we were amazed to find that gliders were using every single one of the nest boxes we set up, which meant that we could quickly and confidently expand this effort to a larger area.
With the ever-mounting challenges facing biodiversity, it’s essential that we continue innovating through technology and partnerships like Wildlife Insights. Rapid access to actionable data means that we can make faster, more effective conservation decisions.
12. Why is measuring biodiversity critical for conservation efforts?
A. It helps to identify endangered species quickly.
B. It raises public awareness about biodiversity loss.
C. It allows for the tracking of wildlife changing patterns.
D. It provides data for making informed conservation decisions.
13. What is the problem with camera traps?
A. They are difficult to fix. B. They fail to shoot clear images.
C. They have limited storage. D. They generate much useless data.
14. What does the underlined phrase “filter out” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Edit. B. Compare. C. Remove. D. Show.
15. What does the case of the greater glider illustrate?
A. The impact of case analysis. B. The value of Wildlife Insights.
C. The advantage of artificial nest boxes. D. The necessity of habitat protection.
D 13. D 14. C 15. B
根据第一段中“As the old saying goes, we can’t manage what we can’t measure. And this rings especially true when it comes to conservation. Trying to measure biodiversity is a critical part of WWF’s conservation work.(常言道,无法测量便无从管理。这句话在生态保护领域尤为真切——测量生物多样性正是世界自然基金会保护工作的核心环节)”、第二段“Camera traps are one of the primary tools we use to collect data on biodiversity. We are all familiar with the powerful images of wildlife that camera traps can shoot. But what you may not realize is that behind every one of those beautiful photos, we also collect thousands of photos without any animals at all. So WWF joined forces with other conservation organizations and Google to develop a better way to manage camera trap data called Wildlife Insights.(红外相机是我们收集生物多样性数据的主要工具之一。大家都熟悉它能捕捉到的震撼野生动物影像,但你可能没有意识到的是,在每一张美丽的照片背后,我们还收集了数千张完全没有动物的照片。为此,世界自然基金会联合其他环保组织与谷歌,共同开发了更高效管理红外相机数据的平台Wildlife Insights)”和第三段中“With the help of tools like Wildlife Insights, information is now getting into the hands of decision-makers more quickly, which is critical for species like the endangered greater glider (大袋鼯).(借助Wildlife Insights等工具的帮助,信息现在能更快地送到决策者手中,这对像濒危的大袋鼯这样的物种至关重要)”可知,Wildlife Insights平台高效管理红外相机数据,帮助快速收集生物多样性数据,而这些数据信息对濒危物种的保护至关重要。
根据第二段中“But what you may not realize is that behind every one of those beautiful photos, we also collect thousands of photos without any animals at all. (但你可能没有意识到的是,在每一张美丽的照片背后,我们还收集了数千张完全没有动物的照片)”可知,红外相机的问题在于它们会产生大量无用的数据(空白照片)。故选D项。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中“Wildlife Insights is an online platform that uses artificial intelligence to automatically filter out all those annoying blank images, find the ones that contain wildlife, and identify which species is in a photo (Wildlife Insights是一个线上平台,它利用人工智能自动filter out所有那些烦人的空白图像,找出包含野生动物的照片,并识别照片中的物种)”可知,该平台先“去除”空白图像,再找出有效图像。
根据第四段中“With the help of tools like Wildlife Insights, information is now getting into the hands of decision-makers more quickly, which is critical for species like the endangered greater glider (大袋鼯). (借助Wildlife Insights等工具的帮助,信息现在能更快地送到决策者手中,这对像濒危的大袋鼯这样的物种至关重要)”和第五段“But after analyzing the photos in Wildlife Insights, we were amazed to find that gliders were using every single one of the nest boxes we set up, which meant that we could quickly and confidently expand this effort to a larger area.

The old workshop door creaked open. Clara walked in quietly. Her shoes stepped on wood shavings (刨花) that sparkled in the sunlight. Through the dusty windows, the morning light shone on Grandfather’s rough hands. He was gluing a maple chair leg.
The wall calendar still showed January. Its yellowed pages were curling, just like dry leaves. An open order book lay on the desk. February’s page was empty. There had been no new orders since mid-January. Clara held her breath and recorded Grandfather with her phone. She focused on his quick hands as he measured angles with a metal ruler. “This might help him,” she thought, eager to show how skilled he was.
However, when she posted the video online, negative comments flooded in. “Old ways for a dying business!” “No wonder the business is failing!” Saddened, Clara deleted the video quickly. A spider crawled over the empty order book. Its blank pages showed not many people wanted handmade things these days.
“Want to see my treasure?” Grandpa’ s voice broke the silence. He opened a leather album filled with pencil sketches (草图) like library chairs from 1958 and park benches from 1962. A faded photo slipped out: a smiling boy missing two teeth was grinning at the camera, holding a curved (弯曲的) spoon proudly.
“Timmy, my former student,” Grandfather smiled, touching the curve of the spoon in the photo. “Now he designs furniture for tall buildings. Last month’s newspaper had an article about his curved stairs. It was inspired by this very spoon.” He tapped the photo, adding, “Machines make things fast, but hands remember stories.”
Clara looked at the photo — the curved spoon, Timmy’s smile, and Grandpa’s young handwriting on the back: Timmy’s first repair, age 7. Beside her, fresh wood shavings were shining. “Stories must be told,” Clara murmured, taking out her phone again. This time, she aimed to share not just the work, but the story behind it.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1: The next morning, Clara uploaded a new video.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2: A week later, Timmy, now a famous furniture designer, walked in the workshop.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The next morning, Clara uploaded a new video. This time, her camera swept across the leather album’s sketches of Timmy’s curved spoon and lingered on a yellowed newspaper clipping featuring his iconic stairs. As Grandfather narrated their story, she zoomed in on his hands — wrinkled yet steady — shaping a piece of wood into art. The video ended with his voice, “Hands remember stories machines forget.” By noon, comments exploded, “Hands of a legend!” “Need this magic in my home!” Shares of the video skyrocketed. Amid the flood of praise, Clara spotted a message, “I’m coming to see you soon, Master-back to where the magic began!” Her eyes widened at Timmy’s profile picture which just matched the same grin from that faded photo.
A week later, Timmy, now a famous furniture designer, walked in the workshop. He embraced Grandfather, tears glistening. “Your spoon taught me curves have souls,” he said, placing the curved spoon on the desk. Together, they designed a signature chair — Timmy sketching modern lines on his tablet while Grandfather penciling his classic curves. Clara captured the moment: their four hands shaping a maple chair leg together, mirroring the one Grandfather had glued a week before. When Timmy posted the video, orders poured in: new chairs with curved legs, and even wooden benches for the town park. Wood shavings danced in the sunlight as the workshop came back to life, the order book’s empty February page now filled with March’s growing demands.
