Today,we find ourselves in a digital world of words, and the more we depend on technology, the less we use traditional writing devices (设备).Sometimes, when we pick up a pen,we perhaps stop for a while trying to remember how to write a word. Then,it might remind us just how much we should value the charm of Chinese handwriting.China has a rich history of handwriting art, especially Chinese calligraphy.
For many Chinese,it won’t come as a surprise to learn that these Four Treasures of the Study, the writing brush,Xuan paper, inkstick and inkstone, are included in the list of national intangible cultural heritage items (国家级非物质文化遗产名录) of China.Writing brushes are traditionally made from animal hair. With a history of over one thousand years,Xuan paper plays a key role in Chinese calligraphy and painting. The inkstick is rubbed with water on an inkstone to make ink. This traditional way of producing liquid ink gives the calligrapher more control over his or her writing.
The earliest known examples are called jiaguwen that date back to the Shang Dynasty (1600 — 1046 BC).These picture-like characters slowly developed, and during the Qin Dynasty (221 — 207 BC),people began to write xiaozhuan.During the Han Dynasty (202BC — 220 AD),lishu began to be widely used. This started a new age and led to more popular forms, such as kaishu, caoshu and xingshu.
There is an old saying that learning kaishu is like a baby learning to stand, with xingshu similar to walking, and caoshu similar to running. This means that one should first learn the basic skills well before starting the next level, which is like the English saying,“Learn to walk before you run.”
Stories about the masters of calligraphy have been passed down from generation to generation.Known as the “Sage of Calligraphy”,Wang Xizhi (303 — 361 AD) could be said to be the heart and soul of Chinese calligraphy.Wang
Xizhi started calligraphy at an early age.It is said that he practised calligraphy so much that the water in the pond near his house turned black with him washing his brushes in it day after day.
( ) 33.Why does the writer mention the digital world of words in the first paragraph?
A.To introduce a topic. B.To give a solution.
C.To explain a subject. D.To tell a story.
( ) 34.Which of the following words can best describe Wang Xizhi?
A.Clever. B.Patient.
C.Hard-working. D.Mysterious.
( ) 35.What can we infer from the passage?
A.Xingshu learners should learn kaishu first.
B.People who cannot write correctly now are becoming stupid.
C.Kaishu, caoshu and xingshu are more popular than lishu in ancient times.
D.Nowadays the Four Treasures of the Study are of little value.
( ) 36.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A.The Story of Wang Xizhi
B.The Four Treasures of the Study

Who was the most talented person that ever lived? It might be Leonardo da Vinci. The Italian was a painter, sculptor (雕塑家) and inventor. In 2021,we celebrated his 569th birthday on April 15th.
Da Vinci is still widely considered as a great painter. His most famous painting, the Mona Lisa, which still sits in the Louvre Museum (卢浮宫),is a piece of great art work.
The Mona Lisa is famous for the mysterious smile. What is the reason for the woman’s smile? This is a question always asked, but it remains unanswered to this day.
Some believe that the Mona Lisa is actually a portrait (肖像) of Da Vinci himself. This is because some of her expressions on the face are similar to those in one of Da Vinci’s self-portraits.Others might suggest she smiles because she has lost her teeth. We will never know for sure...It is just fun to guess.
The new research from scientists shows that some people even think she isn’t smiling but looks unhappy. The scientists also say that if the Mona Lisa doesn’t look happy to you,it might be because of your own feelings.
The researchers showed 43 people two groups of pictures.Group One all had neutral (中性的) faces.Group Two had happy and angry faces. Each time, people saw two pictures, one from Group One,the other from Group Two.Later, they described what the neutral faces were like. When people saw a neutral face after a happy face, most of them thought it was smiling. When they saw a neutral face after a sad face, most of them thought it had a sad expression.Scientists believe our brain has predictive power.People use their past experiences to predict what they are going to experience next.
“ ” said Erika Siegel, one of the researchers.“However,if you see the Mona Lisa after you have great fun,you can see her beautiful smile.”
