Jane is very good at gardening. She learned how to love and take care of flowers from her grandmother. Her flower garden is the best in town.
One day, while she was looking through a flower list she often ordered the flowers from, suddenly a picture of a plant caught her eyes. Her eyes lit up excitedly. She’d never seen flowers like that before. “I have to have it”, she said to herself, and ordered it at once.
When it arrived, she already had prepared a place for it. She planted it at the back of her yard. It grew well, with beautiful green leaves all over it, but there were no blooms (花). Day after day she continued to water it and feed it. Sometimes she even talked to it, hoping to make it bloom. However, it was useless.
One morning, a few weeks later, when standing before the vine (藤), she felt very sad that her plant hadn’t bloomed. She was giving thought to taking it down and planting something else there.
It was at this point that her neighbor, whose yard joined hers, called over to her. “Thank you so much! You can’t imagine how much I have enjoyed the blooms of that vine you planted.” Jane walked through the gate into her neighbor’s yard, and saw that on the other side of the wall the vine was filled with blooms. At that time, her heart was filled with joy.
They were truly the most beautiful blooms she’d ever seen. The vine had grown through the crevices (缝隙) and it had not flowered on her side of the wall, but it had flowered on the other side.

The play includes more than 60 interesting characters from all walks of life. Through them, the readers get to see how the modern Chinese society changed. The most important character is Wang Lifa, manager of the teahouse. He gets along well with people and keeps the teahouse running in the changing times. However, life turns too difficult and Wang chooses to end his life at last. Besides, Master Chang, a regular visitor, and Qin Zhongyi, owner of the teahouse, are also quite important in the story. Master Chang is a Manchu (满族人). He shows great care for others. He even helps out Wang Lifa when he has to make a living by selling vegetables. As for Qin Zhongyi, he dreams of building a better nation through opening factories and banks. In the end, his dream fails.
The play came out in 1958 and it is still popular both at home and abroad. Today, Teahouse is not only one of Lao She’s best works, but also a treasure in the history of modern Chinese dramas.
