As one of China’s largest heritage sites (遗址), the Forbidden City is a must-see for all visitors to China. It sits in the heart of the capital city of Beijing.
Thanks to skilled workers’ hard work over the past 600 years, all the wooden buildings, even doornails (门钉) are remarkable works that you are sure to enjoy with surprise.
Since it was home to 24 Chinese emperors, there lie over 1.8 million pieces of art, mostly from the collection of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. As a result, it’s famous as one of the world’s largest cultural museums.
After the last emperor of China left the palace, it later became a museum open to the public in 1925. Since then, the Forbidden City hasn’t been “forbidden” anymore; it is popular with both Chinese and foreign tourists. There are 17 million visitors visiting here every year, especially on national holidays and weekends, which makes it the world’s most visited museum.
It is quite easy to travel to the Forbidden City because it is right next to Tian’anmen Square. Since it’s rich in history and culture, it’s better for you to travel with a good local guide, who can bring the stories of each treasure to life and help you avoid meeting too many people.

In the traditional Chinese farming calendar, the year is divided into 24 solar terms (节气) and there are six terms in each season. Grain Rain, the sixth and final solar term of spring, usually falls in late April. Its name comes from the ancient saying, “Rain brings up the growth of hundreds of grains”, showing the importance of rainfall during this period for crop growth.
Grain Rain is not just about farming, it is also rich in cultural traditions. For example, in southern China, people enjoy drinking spring tea on this day. The tea is full of vitamins and is believed to help people see better and keep bad luck away. Meanwhile, in northern China, people usually eat Toona sinensis. This seasonal vegetable is known for being good for the stomach.
Another interesting tradition belongs to coastal fishermen. For thousands of years, they have celebrated the Grain Rain Festival, which marks their first fishing trip of the year. During the festival, they pray for (祈祷) safety at sea and a successful fishing season.
Grain Rain is more than a sign of changing seasons. It also shows the close connection between humans and nature in Chinese culture. As spring turns to summer, people follow old customs while working with nature’s rhythm (节奏). This harmony reminds us to respect the Earth’s cycles (循环), just as farmers and fishermen have done for centuries.
33. Why does the writer mention the ancient saying in Paragraph 1?
A. To criticize (批评) modern farming. B. To explain the origin of the name of Grain Rain.
C. To compare different types of crops. D. To describe the taste of spring tea.
34. How does the writer support the topic sentence of Paragraph 2?
A. By making a comparison. B. By using a saying.
C. By giving examples. D. By listing numbers.
35. What can we infer about coastal fishermen?
A. They dislike sunny days. B. They prefer farming to fishing.
C. They never celebrate any festivals. D. They care about natural cycles.

My Favourite Museum
My favourite museum is Shaanxi History Museum.
It is located in Xi’an, Shaanxi Province. It opens at half past eight in the morning and closes at seven o’clock in the evening. It is free to visit. My favourite room is the Prehistoric Age Room because we can learn about what humans looked like millions of years ago and how they lived at that time. We can also admire many colourful pieces of pottery, which help us know the ancient people’s ideas of beauty.
I have been there with my family and friends many times. Every time I visit it, I can learn new historical knowledge. It really opens my eyes.
