At 5:12 a.m.on April 18,1906,people living in San Francisco were awakened by a
40-second earthquake.After a 10-second stop,an even stronger earthquake struck,lasting
25 seconds.Survivors saw the ground move in waves as high as three feet. The earthquake
damaged streets,and streetcar rails.
Fires broke out soon after the earthquake, caused primarily by overturned stoves
F)or damaged electrical wiring.Because the city's water mains had suffered more than 300
breaks,no water was available (to fight the fires, which rapidly burned beyond
control. To control the fire, firefighters began to dynamite (buildings in its path.
Unfortunately, this method sometimes spread the fire.By the evening of April 18,1,700
soldiers had arrived in San Francisco to help both local people and the firefighters.
After burning uncontrolled for three days, the fire finally burned itself out by the
morning of April 21.More than 28,000 buildings had been destroyed, resulting in about
$500 million in damage.
Although the official number of deaths was 311,it is now believed that about 3,000
people were killed.About 250,000 people (two-thirds of the city's population)were left
homeless. They were forced to live in tents ()in public parks.
Among the earthquake's survivors was the famous Italian opera singer Enrico Caruso.
On the night of April 17,he had performed (the role of Jose in Georges Bizet's 1875
opera Carmen, and had been scheduled for another performance on April 18.Caruso was so
shocked by the earthquake that he made up his mind never to return to San Francisco
again.
Ansel Adams,at age 4,survived the earthquake along with his family, though their
house and many things were damaged. An aftershock threw young Adams face-first into a
garden wall, giving him what his friend Cedric Wright would call an "earthquake nose".
Describing his broken nose, which was never repaired,Adams would later joke,"My
beauty was damaged forever."But he felt the power of the quake, which he called his

The weather affects many aspects of people's daily life.Knowing and understanding
what the weather is doing is useful.
However, the weather is also one of the most unpredictable elements in the world.
Although many people watch the morning news and gather the information about the
weather, this is often wrong.Whole days can be mined by believing that the weather will
be one thing, when it turns out to be another. However, owning wireless weather stations
allows the owners to monitor(监视,检查)the weather for themselves.
Not only will these weather stations allow the owners to see what the weather is
doing, but it is personalized (to them and their area.Wireless weather stations are
specifically prepared for the immediate neighborhood.Plans will be able to be made, and
important decisions will no longer be ruined by bad weather.
Although these weather stations are typically seen in homes, they can also be used
very easily on farms and fishing boats. Both farmers and fishermen rely on the weather for
their business and using up-to-date weather information is quite indispensable.By using the
wireless weather stations,it can determine for them when to harvest crops and head back
to the shore.Because of the size of the weather station, they can be moved very easily and
used wherever necessary for people.
The wireless weather stations are great for all homes, especially for areas that suffer
from extreme weather conditions. The up-to-date,instant weather reports will allow a
person to monitor what the weather is doing and if the bad weather is heading in their
direction.Extreme weather tends to come very quickly;therefore, any information that is
received is helpful.
The weather stations are very simple to set up and are run by solar panels
)ensuring they will work even if there is a power-cut.They are far smaller than those in
previous years and give a couple of very simple read-outs for the owner. They are easy to
use and fascinating to understand.
8.From Paragraph 2,the author intends to
A.show us how unpredictable the weather used to be
B.explain the value of having wireless weather stations
C.make it clear how popular the morning news is
D.show how people got weather information in the past
-217
9.What does the underlined word "indispensable"in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Necessary.
B.Indifferent.
C.Attractive.
D.Impossible.
10.What can we learn about a wireless weather station?
A.The information it provides is slow but more specific.
B.It is economical and saves money in the long run.
C.It can continue to work even if there is a power failure.
D.It's hard to set up but can be moved from one place to another.
11.What's the main idea of the text?
A.The weather-the most unpredictable element in the world.
B.The importance of knowing and understanding the weather.
C.The weather and its effects on people's daily life.
D.Good reasons for having wireless weather stations.

Everybody hates rats(big mice). But in the earthquake capitals of the world-Japan,
Los Angeles,Turkey-rats will soon be man's best friends.
What happens after an earthquake? We send in rescue dogs. Why?Because they can
smell people.Dogs save lives. They help rescuers to find living people. But dogs are big and
they can't get into small spaces. So now a new research project is using a smaller animal to
save lives:the rat.
How does it work?First, the rat is trained to smell people. When this happens, the
rat's brain gives a signal().This is sent to a small radio on its back, and then the
rescuers follow the radio signal. When the rat's brain activity jumps, the rescuers know that
someone is alive. The rat has smelled that person.
Although there are already robots which can do this job, rats are better.Christian
Linster at Cornell University,New York, says,"Robots'noses don't work well when there
are other smells around.Rats are good at that."Rats can also see in the dark. They are
cheaper and quicker to train than dogs, and unlike robots, they don't need electricity!
The "rat project"is not finished, but Julie Ryan of International Rescue Organization
in Scotland says,"It would be wonderful.A rat can get into spaces we can't get to,and a rat
will get out if it isn't safe.Perhaps for the first time in history, people will be happy to see
a rat in a building (but only after an earthquake,of course).
12.In the world earthquake capitals, rats will become man's best friends because they can
A.take the place of man's rescue jobs
B.find the position of living people who are trapped in buildings
C.serve as food for living people who are trapped in buildings
D.get into small spaces
218

A.the noise made by the rat
B.the rat's unusual behavior
C.the signal sent by the radio on the rat's back
D.the smell given off by the person
14.Rats have all the following advantages EXCEPT that
A.they are more lovely than other animals
B.they are less expensive to train than dogs
C.they don't need electricity
D.they are small and can get into small places
15.After reading the passage we know
A.at present rats have taken the place of dogs in searching for people

Every year, wildfires destroy millions of hectares of forest land.16 Smokejumpers
help to stop this.
17 Smokejumpers are a special type of firefighters. They jump from planes or are
lowered by helicopters into areas that are difficult to reach by car or on foot, such as the
middle of a mountain forest. They race to put out fires as fast as they can.
At a fire site, smokejumpers first examine the land and decide how to fight the fire.
Their main goal is to stop a fire from spreading.Using basic equipment such as shovels and
axes, smokejumpers clear land of burnable material, like plants and other dry material.
18
Although the majority of smokejumpers are men, more women are joining.19 For
example, smokejumpers employed in the US must be 120 to 200 pounds (54 to 91
kilograms)so they don't get blown away by the strong winds or get hurt when they land.
Smokejumpers must also be capable of surviving in the wilderness. In Russia, many
smokejumpers know how to find food in the forest and even make simple furniture from
trees.20 But for these firefighters,smokejumping isn't just a job.They love being able
to jump out of planes, fight fires, and live in the forest. As 28-year-old Russian
smokejumper Alexi Tishin says,"This is the best job for tough guys.
A.What is a smokejumper?
B.How do smokejumpers do it?
C.More important are your height and weight.
D.It means the work is dangerous and takes a long time.
E.And homes are damaged, and thousands of people die.
F.They carry water with them, too, but only a limited amount.
G.Hot weather and fast-moving winds often make these fires more dangerous.

Paragraph 1:
Unluckily,as Baci celebrated his 10th birthday,he started
having health problems.I found there was a time when Baci always
lay on the ground lazily and had no interest in food.Later we were
told that he had a serious illness.Gradually,he became weaker and
weaker. It appears that our days with Baci are coming to a close.I
am preparing myself for the terrible day when I will have to say
goodbye to Baci.
Paragraph 2:
Baci was something we needed to move us forward in our
journey through sadness. He is an unexpected gift for which I will
always be thankful. This crazy small dog has made a difference to a
family fighting against the death of a daughter and sister.I still
remember the days when Baci put his ball near me and waited for
me to throw it away, which made us laugh happily. That memory
of Baci will live lovingly in my heart for a valuable part of my life.

choose Physics,Chemistry and Politics, which are all my favorites.
Additionally,to be a great physicist is always what I am dreaming
of.As for the suggestions,I recommend that you should take your
interests and strengths into consideration before making any
decision.Besides, you'd better ask more help from your teachers and
parents.
Hopefully,my suggestions could be helpful to you.
