The Wisdom of a Scientist: Yang Zhenning’s View on Learning
Yang Zhenning, a great scientist who made important contributions to physics, had some thoughtful ideas about education. Born in 1922, he showed a talent for mathematics at a young age. However, his father made an unusual decision. Instead of pushing him to study more math, he hired a tutor to teach him classical Chinese works like Mencius (《孟子》). This experience helped Yang develop good values and broad knowledge, which later proved valuable in his life.
Yang criticized the “forced feeding” (填鸭式) method in education. He believed that forcing students to memorize too many facts made them “breathless” and killed their creativity and interest in learning. He thought it was more important for students to keep their natural curiosity.
So, what did he suggest? He supported the “permeation” (渗透法) method. This means learning through regular exposure to materials. You don’t need to understand everything completely at first. Just keep reading and listening, and understanding will come naturally over time.
Besides knowledge, Yang also stressed the importance of developing personal “taste” in learning. Similar to how artists have their own style, scientists need their own judgment. This taste helps them choose suitable research directions. Yang himself successfully combined different ways of thinking from both Eastern and Western education, which gave him a unique advantage.
Finally, Yang always encouraged students to learn broadly at their own pace. He saw learning as a positive and lifelong journey, where different subjects can slowly shape a person’s thinking and values.

A.He asked Yang to focus only on math.
B.He found a tutor to teach Yang Chinese classics.
C.He sent Yang to a science school abroad.
D.He taught Yang English every day.

D.curious and interested
3.What does “forced feeding” education mean?
A.Learning with interest step by step.
B.Giving students good meals.
C.Making students memorize too much.
D.Letting students learn only favorites.
4.Why is developing “taste” important for a scientist according to the passage?
A.It helps them cook better meals.
B.It allows them to make more friends.
C.It helps them choose better research topics.
D.It makes them speak English more fluently.
5.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Yang Zhenning’s great achievements in physics.
B.Yang Zhenning’s early education story.
C.Yang Zhenning’s opinions on effective learning.
D.The differences between Eastern and Western education.

Part 1: Read and Explore
How to Read Properly
Are you a fast reader or a slow one? Which one is better? In fact, it depends on what you are reading. We need to spend more time understanding fully the ideas and information which are important to remember. However, the slow reader may not be a good reader when he may spend too much time in reading a simple story just for fun. So neither of them is really a good reader.
Knowing why you are reading will often help you to know whether to read quickly or slowly. For example, something like instructions, Maths problems, science and storybooks which are full of important information. You must read such things slowly to remember each important step and understand each important idea. And we should read some simple stories for enjoyment, letters from friends and bits of news from hometown papers more quickly.

In some of your reading, you must change your speed from fast to slow and slow to fast, as you go along.
