“Do you want to grow your own vegetables?” Mum asked. “Yes!” My eyes got big. Mum smiled at my excitement. She gave me a book on gardening, and I carefully planted some seeds (种子) in the backyard.
After supper, I rushed to see how much they might grow. Nothing! My mouth dropped. “Someone stole my seeds!” Mum laughed from ear to ear. She said, “Johnny, go and check the book.” I read the book and I knew something needed to be done. Early the next morning, I ran to the backyard. Everything looked the same but I wasn’t that disappointed (失望的). As the book said, I slowly watered my seeds and put my finger in the soil (泥土) to make sure it wasn’t too dry. That evening, I couldn’t help going to check my garden again. No sign of anything green. Just dirt.
The next morning I raced to the garden again. No changes. “Why is it taking so long for the seeds to grow?” I asked. “Grow up!” I shouted. “Please, just grow,” I almost cried. Mum was too busy with housework to help. “Read the book, and wait patiently.” So I read again. I removed the grass from the soil and watered the seeds.
Then one morning, I walked out to my garden. I wasn’t expecting to see anything yet. To my surprise, a little bit of green came into my eyes. I got down on my knees for a closer look. “They grew!” I shouted. I could see little green leaves growing everywhere! I was so excited! “They finally grew! The book is right. It took several days for the seeds to be in the soil before popping up.”

22. What type of writing is this passage?
A. A science report about plants.
B. A personal story about gardening.

A. ①/②/③④ B. ①②/③④ C. ①/②③/④

Moo Deng is a baby pygmy hippo (河马). It is similar to a large hippo. But a pygmy hippo is much smaller. Moo Deng lives at Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand. She was born in July. Her name means “bouncy pork”. Her cheeks are pink. Her belly jiggles as she runs around her pen (棚). She nibbles on people’s knees. She is also an Internet superstar. Every move she makes is closely watched—whether she’s being sprayed with water, being carried by zookeepers, or simply lying on the ground.
Why is Moo Deng so well-loved? Scientists say it is because humans are born to like cute babies, even baby hippos! Many baby animals usually have specific looks. They have big eyes and large foreheads. They have chubby bodies. These things make baby animals look innocent. That makes people want to protect them.
Konrad Lorenz was a zoologist from Austria. He was the first one to think of this idea. He talked about it in 1943. He explained that cuteness makes babies hard to ignore.
This is important for babies. They cannot live on their own. They need adults to look after them. Cuteness touches people’s hearts. When we see a cute baby, we want to cuddle (搂抱) it. We want to take care of it. This is how people feel when they see Moo Deng.
Pygmy hippos are in trouble. People hunt them, and the forests they live in are being cut down. Today, there are only about 2,000 pygmy hippos living in the wild. They might disappear forever. But Moo Deng’s fame might help. People love Moo Deng. Hopefully they will learn to care about all pygmy hippos.
24. We can learn from Paragraph 1 that ________.
A. Moo Deng is a large hippo
B. Moo Deng is unfriendly to people
C. Moo Deng lives at a zoo in Thailand
25. Which of the following explains the word “ignore” in Paragraph 3?
A. Pay no attention to. B. Take good care of. C. Become friends with.
26. What can we infer about Moo Deng being popular online?
A. It lets her hunt other animals.
B. It may help wild pygmy hippos.
C. It makes her hard to live in the zoo.
27. Why does the writer write this passage?
A. To talk about zoo rules.
B. To ask people to protect pygmy hippos.
C. To teach how to take care of baby hippos.

Traveling is one of the exciting experiences a person can have. It’s not just about visiting new places; it’s about learning, growing, and creating memories. However, travel isn’t always perfect. Sometimes, the weather can be bad, or you might get lost. But these challenges are part of the adventure. ____31____

During a vacation, when you see a lake come out of the desert (沙漠) or a city float on water, you should be careful. What you may see may not be real things but just mirages (海市蜃楼). They’re like magic tricks made by (被……制造) light, different temperatures, and air.
A mirage happens when light bends (弯曲) as it moves through air at different temperatures. Usually, when the temperatures do not change, light travels straight (直线的). But when the air temperatures on the ground change, the changing air near the ground makes the light bend up or down, which tricks our eyes into seeing things that aren’t there. For example, on a hot day, people may find that there is a pool of water on the road. But when they get close, there will be nothing.
There are two main types of mirages. One type of mirages looks like something that is floating above an object, like a city in the sky. The other makes things look like they’re floating below the ground, like a lake in the desert. Both happen because light takes a “wrong turn” and shows people a false picture.
If you’re on vacation near a beach, desert, or mountain, you might see a mirage. However, don’t run to the mirage because it’s not real. If you are very thirsty or hungry but still try getting close to a mirage, you could easily get lost and put yourself in danger.
Next time you go on a trip, keep your eyes open for these amazing tricks of light. Remember, nature loves to play games—but science can explain them all!
阅读下面短文,根据其内容填空和回答问题。(前四个小题每题答案不超过3个单词,最后一个小题需用完整句子回答。)

34. Light bends and causes a mirage when moving through air with ________.
35. There are ________ main types of mirages in Paragraph 3.
