Chen Lei “Life is full of challenges (挑战), but I don’t let small troubles worry me too much. I usually share my problems with my close friends. Why? Because we are of similar age, and they understand my situation better. They always give me useful and easy-to-follow ideas, and talking to them makes me feel relaxed.”
Li Yan “I’m a quiet person by nature and like to deal with my problems by myself. I believe that some thoughts and feelings are personal, and it’s hard for others to fully understand me. So, I almost never share my troubles with anyone. Solving problems on my own helps me become more independent.”

Working hours are different from one country to another. In France, people spend about 1,646 hours a year at work. In Japan, however, people work about 2,159 hours a year. Why do people work so many hours? Some people work more hours because they want to make more money. However, many bosses (老板) don’t pay overtime. Their workers don’t get more pay for more work. Some people think it’s their duty (责任) to work more hours. Some are afraid of losing their jobs if they don’t work more hours.
Many people say that their vacations are too short. In France, people get five weeks of paid vacation a year. In Germany, they get four to six weeks, and in the United States, two weeks. One study shows fewer than half of workers use all their vacation days. In Great Britain, there is a saying, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull (迟钝的) boy.” If that is true, there must be a lot of dull people in the world.

Do you remember where you were when you heard the news about the traffic accident of a close friend? The answer is probably “yes”. Do you remember what you were doing on your birthday that year? You may have to think a little harder.
People remember bad memories (记忆) more easily and in greater detail (细节) than good ones. Why is that? A new study finds that people do this because of evolutionary (进化的) reasons.
Elizabeth Kensinger at Boston College, the US, did a study looking at this. They found negative feelings like worry and sadness cause an increase (增加) in mental activity. This activity happens in the part of the brain (大脑) that controls memories. So memories caused by negative feelings are kept in greater detail than happy or other kinds of memories. For example, after seeing a man on a street holding a knife, people remember the man and knife clearly, but they forget the details of the street.
According to Kensinger, it is easy to understand this from an evolutionary point of view (进化论观点). She said that people paid attention (关注) to dangerous information so they could use that information to guide their actions to save their lives. They could also use it to plan for similar things in the future.
The scientists say more studies are needed on how we remember bad memories. This line of study will help solve the problem of stress disorder (应激障碍).
47. Compared to bad memories, which one is right about good memories?
A. They are remembered more in detail. B. They are remembered less easily.
C. They are remembered longer. D. They are remembered more easily.
48. What does the underlined word “negative” in Paragraph 3 mean?

C. She will have a happy memory. D. Her brain activity will increase.

My Opinions on Doing Housework
As a middle school student, I think doing housework is meaningful and necessary. Although it takes up some of my study time, I still support it for the following reasons.
Firstly, doing housework helps me develop life skills and independence. By learning to cook or clean, I can take better care of myself in the future. Secondly, it improves family relationships. Sharing housework can reduce my parents’ burden and help us understand each other better.
In a word, doing housework is good for both my personal growth and my family.
