The Hidden World of Caves
Deep underground, there is a hidden world. Few people have ever seen this world. Caves are natural holes in the ground, often formed by water slowly eating away at rock over thousands of years. Some caves are small, but others are huge, with tunnels (隧道) running for miles.
Exploring caves, also known as caving, is an exciting but dangerous activity. Cavers must move slowly through narrow passages (通道), climb down deep holes, and sometimes swim through underground rivers. They need special equipment*, such as safety helmets, lights, and ropes to stay safe.
One of the most famous caves in the world is the Son Doong Cave in Vietnam. It is the largest cave on the Earth, big enough to put a 40-floor building into it. Inside, there are underground jungles, rivers, and even clouds formed by the cave’s own weather system.
Scientists study caves to learn more about the Earth's history. The rocks and water in caves can tell us how the climate has changed over millions of years. Some caves also have ancient paintings left by humans thousands of years ago.
However, caves are very fragile (脆弱的) environments. A single touch can break the rock shape that took hundreds of years to grow. That’s why cavers always follow the rule: “Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints, kill nothing but time.”
*The word “equipment” refers to the tools, machines, clothes etc. that you need to do a particular job or activity.
33. What does the underlined word “caving” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. The activity of climbing mountains. B. The activity of exploring caves.
C. The activity of swimming in rivers. D. The activity of building caves.
34. From Paragraph 3, we know that the Son Doong Cave ________.
A. was discovered in China B. is as large as 4 buildings
C. was formed several years ago D. has its own weather system
35. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Caves can be easily broken.
B. People can take rock from caves home.
C. Caves hardly have ancient paintings.
D. People often see the underground world.
B 34. D 35. A
第二段句子“Exploring caves, also known as caving, is an exciting but dangerous activity.”,句中“also known as”意为“也被称作”,说明caving就是探索洞穴这项活动,对应选项“The activity of exploring caves”。
第三段末尾“Inside, there are underground jungles, rivers, and even clouds formed by the cave’s own weather system.”,直接说明韩松洞拥有自身的气候系统,对应选项“has its own weather system”,其余选项均与原文不符,
第五段“However, caves are very fragile environments. A single touch can break the rock shape that took hundreds of years to grow.”
Our school held a science festival this ________________.
term
I felt very ________________ to make a robot with two highly creative classmates.
lucky
Finally, we ________________ of making a small robot.
found out the secret
的秘密”在英语中常译为find out the secret。
My confidence and problem-solving skills have ________________.
improved greatly##greatly improved
I like to ________________ on these meaningful school activities.
spend time
【详解】原句中“花时间”是关键词,中文“花时间”对应的英文短语是“spend time”,表示“在某事上花费时间”常用结构为“spend time on sth.”,题干中已给出介词“on”,与spend搭配吻合,句中“like to”后接动词原形,构成“like to do sth.”

ask sb. to do sth.
“after...of hard work”表示“经过数月的刻苦学习”,month意为“月”,是可数名词,此处用复数形式months。
