Caves are dark, quiet, and mysterious places. But did you know they are also like time machines? They can show us what the world was like thousands of years ago.
In many caves around the world, people have found ancient paintings on the walls. These paintings are often of animals like bison (野牛), horses, and deer. They were painted by people who lived a long, long time ago. Scientists believe these paintings were not just for decoration. They might have been part of special ceremonies (仪式) or a way to tell stories.
Besides paintings, caves keep other secrets. The floor of a cave is like a history book. Over thousands of years, dirt and sand build up in layers (层). In these layers, scientists can find old bones, tools, and even seeds. By studying these things, they can learn what animals lived there and what people ate.
Some of the most famous cave paintings are in Lascaux, France. They are over 17,000 years old! To protect them, the caves are now closed to the public. But scientists have built a copy nearby so visitors can still see the amazing art. Caves truly are wonders that connect us to our past.

Yandang Mountain is known as the “No. 1 Mountain in Southeast China.” The mountain is located in Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province. It stands about 1,057 metres above sea level. Its name comes from a dried-up lake at the top. The lake is called Yanhu Lake, or Goose Lake. In autumn, wild geese rest around the lake.
The mountain was not famous until the Song Dynasty (朝代) because it was hard to hike across it. The famous Ming Dynasty explorer Xu Xiake once said, “Only the gods can see all the wonders of Yandang Mountain.”
There are many ancient temples (寺庙) on the mountain. They have a history of hundreds of years. And many famous artists left works here. These works include stone sculptures (雕塑), calligraphic tablets (书法碑刻) and paintings on the rocks.
The mountain is full of interesting natural sights. One of the most famous is Ling Feng, or Spiritual Peaks. This area has many strange peaks and cliffs. They look different from different sides. Take Hezhang Peak for example. The 270-metre-high peak can look like a pair of hands, a young lady in a qipao or two people in each other’s arms.
Another well-known sight is Sanzhepu, or Three-Terraced (阶梯形的) Falls. Rock cliffs cut the waterfalls into three levels: upper, middle and lower levels. They are some of the most special waterfalls on the mountain.
