It was several days after my mom had passed away and I was at a loss how to carry on with my life. Therefore, when I received an email from a friend about a race benefiting cancer research, I ignored it. It seemed to be heart-breaking, as cancer was the disease that had taken my mother away from me.
But a general responsibility for game organizing made me obliged to agree. In the weeks to come, I managed to re-enter the world of the living. I checked our team's website daily, feeling proud each time a donation added to our total. I knew my mom would have wanted it that way. She was the type who never got defeated. It was this very spirit that helped me get by.
When the race ended, I noticed the runners all had one thing in common: There were big smiles on their faces. They made it look so rewarding and effortless. I wanted in.
Therefore, I enrolled in another race two months later. Considering I could barely run a mile, it was ambitious. But my friend and I made a training plan so I wouldn't come in last. I followed it religiously and didn't let anything get in my way.
Running up and down the city's hills, I was flooded with memories. I had lived there after college and my mother had visited often. I passed Bloomingdale's, recalling the time she and I had gotten into a screaming argument there.
I was about to beat myself up when I remembered what Mom had said after her diagnosis (诊断) of cancer. "I don't want you to feel guilty about anything." Her paper-thin hands had held me tightly. A weight lifted from my shoulders.
When the race day arrived, I gave it my all for my mom and for all she had taught me and continued to teach me. As I ran, whenever I felt like slowing down, I pictured her cheering me on.
Crossing the finish line, I was filled with her love and a sense of peace.
24. Why did the author ignore the email in the beginning?
A. She felt it hard to finish the race. B. She thought the race meaningless.
C. She had no time to join in the event. D. She was reminded of her mom's death.
25. What mainly helped the author recover from her mom's death?
A. The inspiration from her mom. B. The company of her friends.
C. The pleasure in going for a run. D. The success in organizing an event.
26. Which of the words can best describe the author's mom?
A. Thoughtful and polite. B. Outgoing and humorous.
C. Strong-willed and caring. D. Open-minded and patient.
27. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The rewards of great friendship. B. The loss of my sweet memories.
C. What matters most in running. D. How I recovered in running.

After finishing a meal at an American Chinese restaurant you probably expect to receive a handful of fortune cookies after you pay the bill. Fortune cookies are in Chinese restaurants throughout the United States. It's rather satisfying to crack open a cookie at the end of your meal and read your "lucky fortune" on the piece of paper inside.
The exact origin of the fortune cookie is unknown. It is thought that the tasty snack was first introduced into San Francisco in 1914, after an immigrant began giving out the cookie with "thank you" notes in them. These "thank you" notes were intended as symbols of appreciation for friends who stood with him through the economic hardship and discrimination (歧视) of his early life in America.
There is another origin story. Los Angeles is regarded as the site of the fortune cookie's invention. In this version of the story, David Jung, a Chinese immigrant living in L. A., is thought to have created the cookie in order to uplift the spirits of the poor and homeless. In 1918, Jung handed out the cookies for free to the poor outside his shop and each cookie contained a strip of paper with an inspirational sentence printed on it.
Fortune cookies first began to gain popularity in mainstream American culture during WWII. Chinese restaurants would serve them in place of desserts, as desserts were not popular in traditional Chinese food. Today fortune cookies are not tied to Chinese-American culture. In fact, the largest fortune cookie producer is located in the United States and it produces 4.5 million fortune cookies a day - an evidence to the modern-day popularity of the snack. However, an attempt to introduce the fortune cookie to China in 1992 was a failure, and the cookie was cited for being "too American."
So the next time you break open a fortune cookie and read a fortune about the many successes you should expect in your future, remember that the conclusion to your Chinese restaurant meal may not be as Chinese as you think.
28. What do we know about fortune cookies?
A. They are as popular in China as in America.
B. They are often added to the customers' bill.
C. They first appeared in America during WWII.
D. They contain pieces of paper with good wishes.
29. Why were fortune cookies introduced into San Francisco?
A. To make profits. B. To express thanks.
C. To raise people's spirits. D. To help people out of hardship.
30. Which of the following sentences may be found in Jung's cookies?
A. Each exit is an entrance to new experiences.
B. I'm being held prisoner by a Chinese bakery.
C. Only taste fortune cookies; forget all others.
D. The fortune that you seek is not in this cookie.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Can Fortune Cookies Tell Your Fortune? B. A Symbol of Chinese Culture
C. Fortune Cookies, Chinese or American? D. Chinese Restaurants in America
D
Imagine a world without insects. It might sound good at first without creepy-crawly bugs and annoying flies in your apartment. However, the results would be harmful.
The number of insects has dropped by more than half in the past decades, according to British biologist Dave Goulson, author of Silent Earth: Averting the Insect Apocalypse. As insects make up most of the known species on this planet, this data is not good news.
Insects are indeed on the path to dying out, according to the first global scientific review of insect population decrease, which was published in the journal Biological Conservation in January 2019. The researchers say intensive agriculture has been the main cause of the decrease. Pesticides (杀虫剂), in particular, destroy insect habitats. Urbanization and climate change are also significant reasons. "Unless we convert our ways of producing food, insects will go down the path of dying out in a few decades."
What would happen to Earth without insects? It's almost impossible to predict, but the effects would be far-reaching. We need insects to recycle plant and animal material, keep the soil healthy and much more. Without insects, many animals would have nothing to eat, and the predators(捕食者) of those animals would go hungry as well. The ecosystem(生态系统) would be thrown off balance.
"If insect species losses cannot be stopped, this will have harmful effects for both the planet's ecosystems and for the survival of mankind," said Sanchez-Bayo, one of the authors of the review. The first step to stop this process is "to build a society that values the natural world, both for what it does for us and for its own sake", Sanchez-Bayo suggests. "The obvious place to start is with our children, encouraging environmental awareness from an early age."
32. What is people's general impression of insects?
A. Very interesting. B. Quite unpleasant.
C. Extremely helpful. D. Unexpectedly harmful.
33. What does the underlined word in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Drop. B. Change. C. Expand. D. Simplify.
34. Why are insects so important to Earth according to this article?
A. Insects keep the earth ecosystem. B. Insects ensure the earth's diversity.
C. Insects make the soil dry and healthy. D. Insects help slow down climate change.
35. What can we do to stop insect species losses according to Sanchez-Bayo?
A. Use nature in a gentle way.
B. Produce less food for human beings.
C. Educate younger generation to know about it.
D. Provide insects with enough habitats and food.

M: Of course. The party will start at 7 p.m, and run until 9 p.m. But I need your help, so will you please come to my house at 5 p.m.?
W: Alright.
(Text 2)
W: I’m so glad the rain has stopped.
M: Me, too. It’s nice to have the blue sky and the sun for a change, I hope it lasts for a while.
W: The forecast is for some cloud tomorrow.
(Text 3)
M: Excuse me, how can I get to the airport?
W: You can take a taxi or a bus, but it’s rush hour. Therefore, you’d better take the subway.
(Text 4)
M: Why did father punish Mary?
W: She dressed up for the fancy dress party and went out at midnight. You know, our father never allows us to be out after 11 p.m.
(Text 5)
M: Laura, do you think the kids remember the meaning of this national holiday?
W: Only if they watch the president talk about it on TV. Anyway, with all the picnics and the beautiful fireworks, I’m sure most people have a good time.
(Text 6)
M: You speak Putonghua very well, Ann.
W: Thanks, Sam. In fact I was brought up in Beijing. My father used to work as a teacher. He took me with him to Beijing when I was five years old. I went to a local school when I was six and lived and studied the way the local children did.
M: How long did you stay there?
W: Eight years. And now I’m a manager of a trading company. I’ve had a lot of chances to travel to Beijing and have managed to keep in touch with some of them.
(Text 7)
M: Jennifer? Is that you?
W: Steve! Wow! I can’t believe I can meet you here in New York! I haven’t seen you since we graduated.
M: Yeah, actually I haven’t been here for a long time.
W: What have you been doing?
M: I’ve been working in Japan, as a salesman for an import and export company. I’m just here on vacation.
W: That sounds great! Hey, do you want to get together for lunch sometime? Maybe tomorrow?
M: Sure, I’d love to.
W: Why don’t we meet at Nick’s Café around noon?
M: Sounds good to me.
W: All right then! Listen, I’ll be late for an appointment with my customer, but we’ll have lots of time tomorrow.
M: OK, see you.

W: Yes, I want to buy a skirt for myself.
M: We have skirts in different styles and colours. What would you like? How about this one -spotted skirt in black?
W: Oh... the colour looks rather... boring. I don’t like dark colours.
M: Do you like this one then? A white skirt with letters on it?
W: Hmm... it looks nicer than the spotted skirt. But still, the style is a bit out of date. Oh ...the skirt over there is simple and nice. I guess I’d like to try that one--- the flowered in light brown. I’d like a small size, please.
M: Let me check... I’m sorry, all the small sizes are sold out. But don’t worry. We’ll have one tomorrow.

M: No, not at all. I’ve been a couch potato lately, killing time by watching TV. Oh, by the way, did you hear the news?
W: What is it?
M: They’re going to turn the city square into an amusement park.
W: Wonderful. I’m glad that big and ugly thing will be gone.
M: You really are? In my opinion, the square is a hundred times better than any amusement park.
W: I don’t see why.
M: The square is a symbol of our city and is a nice place to have a walk for everybody.
W: Well, I don’t know if that huge and boring thing can be our symbol. But I know for sure the city has tens of parks where you can take a nice walk.
M: I know what you mean. But don’t you think that we will no longer have peace and quiet once the amusement park open?
W: Does that matter? To me, more importantly the amusement park means employment.
M: So what?
W: Income! If you have income, you have money to spend. And in turn, it will create more jobs.
(Text 10)
M: Hello, everyone. It is indeed a great pleasure to have this chance to address such a large audience this evening. I’m Pierre Chabrol from the University of Marseille. At the moment I’m carrying out a research in Senegal for the United Nations as part of a project to increase world food production. Before I get onto what exactly we did in our research, I would like to explain briefly the purpose behind it. Quite simply my subject is rice. As you all know, rice is the main food for millions of people in the world. So if rice crops fail, millions of people die from lack of food. And they do fail, very often through disease. Now what my colleagues and I have been doing out in the field in Senegal as well as in the university laboratories is to try to produce a disease-resisting variety of rice, a particular kind of rice which will resist disease, that is to say, a stronger type of rice.
