B One evening, while I was sorting through my late wife’s clothes in my attic (阁楼), the floor dropped from beneath me. I was used to that falling feeling after my wife, Amy, passed away in 2024. The sight of her things — a piece of medical equipment, a bottle of old perfume — made me feel as if my life were falling apart underfoot. But this time, I fell through the floorboards for real. Fortunately, I was stuck in the cracked floor. I struggled hard and finally pulled myself out. If Amy had still been around, it would never have happened. She was the family’s backbone. I was careless and restless, but she could always slow me down. I was doing all I could to be a good single parent. I quit drinking and fought my way to good health. I put away the smartphone when my daughter was around. But single parenthood still seemed unreasonable and hard. I often forgot about garbage night until the trash (垃圾) piled up. I burned loads of potatoes while cooking. I even mistook payment reminders for spam mails, which cut off our Wi-Fi. I was doing badly. However, the day after the attic incident, when I was fixing the hole in the floor, my daughter approached, laughing. “Daddy,” she said, “I’m so proud of you for falling through the ceiling yesterday. That was very avant-garde (新潮另类的) of you.” First surprised, and then I started laughing too. For the first time, our recent “adventures” seemed funny — not just the hole, but the piled trash, the burnt potatoes. Yes, fate (命运) was playing tricks on me. I could laugh or not but the practical jokes weren’t going to stop. I’m beginning to understand that my carelessness is an advantage, not just a source of embarrassment. This is the hardest year I’ve ever shared with my daughter and laughter is how we tell ourselves we might get through this. 24. What can we learn about the author from paragraph 1? A. He lost his wife in a fall accident. B. He was determined to slow down. C. He used to be the family’s backbone. D. He was heartbroken over his wife’s death. 25. Which of the following could best describe the author? · A. Strict but caring. B. Brave and confident. C. Careless but responsible. D. Fashionable and humorous. 26. Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “spam” in paragraph 2? A. Personal. B. Junk C. Official D. Confirmation 27. What message does the author mainly want to deliver? A. A broken heart heals with love. B. Accidents bring endless troubles. C. Weakness can become one’s strength. D. Laughter carries us through hardships. C There used to be four common life phases (阶段): childhood, adolescence, adulthood and old age. Now, there are at least six: childhood, adolescence, odyssey, adulthood, active retirement and old age. Of the new ones, the least understood is odyssey, the decade of wandering that frequently occurs between adolescence and adulthood. During this decade, 20-somethings go to school and take breaks from school. They live with friends and they live at home. They fall in and out of love. They try one career and then try another. Their parents grow increasingly anxious. They understand that there’s bound to be a transition phase between student life and adult life. But when they look at their own grown children, they see the things are being delayed. They see that people in this age group are delaying marriage. They’re delaying having children. They’re delaying lifelong employment. Actually, this transitional period is a sensible response to new conditions. Young people grow up in tightly scheduled childhoods, but then graduate into a world characterized by uncertainty, diversity and searching. Old success methods don’t apply, new rules have not been formed and everything seems to give way to a less long-lasting type of itself. Marriage gives way to just living together. Having children gives way to keeping pets. The job market is changeable. The odyssey years are not about being lazy. There are fierce competitive pressures as vast numbers of people are chasing relatively few opportunities. Moreover, surveys show that people living through these years have highly traditional desires (they rate parenthood more highly than their own parents did). Actually, what we’re seeing is the creation of a new life phase, just as adolescence came into being a century ago. And as the new generational structure forms, social and economic entrepreneurs (企业家) will create new customs and rules. Someday people will look back and wonder at the vast social changes brought by the rising social group. 28. What is a feature of people in the odyssey phase? A. They welcome changes. B. They dislike living alone. C. They are in an unsettled state. D. They have the most job opportunities. 29. What leads to the appearance of odyssey? A. Outdated traditions. B. An uncertain adult world. C. Lack of success in childhoods. D. Newly made rules and approaches. 30. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about concerning the odyssey years? A. Its nature. B. Its effects. C. Its importance. D. Its development. 31. What is the author’s attitude towards the odyssey phase? A. Critical. B. Encouraging. C. Understanding. D. Doubtful. D AI is extremely power-hungry. The data centres that power AI use more electricity than some small countries, like Japan. So many tech firms are working on building data centres in space to take advantage of continuous solar energy. Yet, an Australian start-up, Panthalassa, believes the solution lies much closer to home: not on land, but at sea. “Wave power is an old technology and it can work, but the ocean is a tough environment,” says Jonathan Koomey, an expert on data centre energy use. “Saltwater and continuing waves cause serious damage to the equipment.” Once Panthalassa’s floating data centre is arranged, it can produce its own electricity and run continuous AI workloads with no grid connection (电网). Traditional data centres use large amounts of fresh water to cool overheating AI hardware. In contrast, Panthalassa’s servers are encased in underwater units. The outer walls of these units act as natural heat exchangers, letting heat escape directly into cold seawater. Still, the potential ecological impact on nearby ocean ecosystems has not yet been fully studied. According to Davis from the Uptime Institute, automation (自动化) in modern data centres is mostly limited to basic monitoring and data analysis. Physical human operation is still frequently required. Network delay is another major limitation. Floating platforms rely on satellites to transmit processed data back to land users. Satellite connections offer limited bandwidth and far higher delay than traditional cables (光缆). So they cannot support most commercial AI applications, including chatbots and search assistants, which require quick responses and reliable (可靠的) network. For now, offshore computing remains experimental. Beyond unsolved engineering challenges, companies must prove that ocean-based data centres can achieve economic competitiveness against traditional land facilities. 32. Why does Panthalassa plan to put the data centre in the ocean? A. To protect its equipment. B. To power it with wave energy. C. To solve AI programming issues. D. To compete against space solar power. 33. Which of the following is a limitation of ocean data centres? A. Unreliability of network connections. B. Heavy usage of fresh water for cooling. C. Damage to ocean ecological environment. D. Inability to produce electricity independently. 34. What do we know about the current ocean-based data centres? A. They are still in early stages. B. They are economically profitable. C. They have settled engineering challenges. D. They have replaced traditional land facilities. 35. What is a suitable title for the text? A. Data Centres: A Way to Solve Energy Problems B. Offshore Computing: An Exploration of the Ocean C. Is it Possible to Solve AI’s Power-hungry Problem? D. Can Ocean Data Centers Meet AI’s Huge Energy Demand? 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Since you can’t choose your family members, there are sure to be a couple of them who know how to push your buttons and make you mad. 36 Stay calm if you get annoyed. Try not to let your emotions take over, even though it might be tough. 37 If this doesn’t work, it might be time to step outside or into the other room to gather your thoughts and collect yourself. Stand firm for your wants and needs. You don’t have to be mean or raise your voice, but don’t let anyone talk over you or look down on you. 38 So it is important to hold your ground with family. Try saying something like, “I’m only here to talk about Grandpa’s will. Please hold your questions until I finish.” Let the other person be right. Even if you don’t agree, there are some things you can let go. 39 Sometimes you can let them feel like they’ve “won”. You don’t have to do this all the time (and don’t do it for important stuff), but if it doesn’t really matter, just let it go. 40 Family issues can really wear you out. Make sure you’re eating, drinking, and sleeping enough so you feel well-rested and healthy. Take some time to do something relaxing like soaking in the bath or reading a good book to lower your overall stress levels. A. Practice self-care. B. Focus on the things you can control. C. Here’s how you can stay cool during tough chats. D. Make it clear that you’re here to be heard, not walked all over. E. If you want to get things under control, you have to take action. F. Don’t argue over everything your family says and pick your battles. G. Take some deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth. 第三部分 语言运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节 (共15个小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 When Leo’s best friend, Mia, invited him to join a hiking trip, he 41 . Interactive cinema, 57 , has broken that pattern, asking viewers not just to watch but to enter stories and make choices 58 can shape how stories develop. In China, interactive films such as The Invisible Guardian 59 (become) popular on major platforms recently. Mixing cinema with game logic (逻辑), these films allow one story 60 (branch) into different paths, each leading to its own ending. Viewers 61 (choose) to explore all the paths may spend four to six hours in total. Some advanced 62 (work) even let storylines reconnect, forming a narrative web. The next step goes beyond tapping on a screen. Have you ever paused to notice the unsung heroes around us, who make our life run smoothly? For me, that hero is my English teacher. Standing on the platform daily, she delivers lively lessons and inspires quiet students to express themselves. I still clearly remember the evening when I cried in the corner of the classroom, after repeatedly failing English tests. My English teacher stayed behind to keep me company, studying my exam papers carefully, explaining my weak points and showing me how to solve similar problems. Her help pulled me out of low spirits. I stopped running away from my weak points and began practicing with the methods she showed me. More importantly, she showed me that progress takes time — a lesson I still carry with me today. Not every hero saves a life. Some just make life easier, quieter, warmer. And those are the ones we should never forget to notice. That’s all for my speech, thank you! Maybe a work by her favorite author would be better. M: You remind me! Text 2 W: We should probably go through the dances before the show. Has the stage been set up yet? M: Yes. Everything is ready. Let’s go over all the dances from the start. There are a lot of people watching tonight, so we don’t want to go wrong. Text 3 M: I love to paint, but I’m not sure if I can make money out of it. Working in a bank would be better. W: I’m going to learn history. Study whatever will benefit your future the most. M: You’re right. I suppose I could always paint for fun. Text 4 W: Here is your bill. That’s £54.50, please. M: Well, I think it should be £45 as the drinks came with the meal. Also, my friend and I would like to share the bill. W: Sorry, my mistake. And of course, you can share it. Text 5 M: Hi, Ruth. I’m happy to tell you that you passed the interview. Can you come in next Monday for the onboarding process? W: Sure. What do I need to prepare? M: We’ve checked your ID card and academic information. So, we’d like to have your recent health report. Text 6 W: Hello, this is Maria Clark. (6) (7) I’m calling because I made a holiday booking through your agency, but I haven’t received confirmation yet. M: I’m afraid there are some problems with the hotel order. The dates you have requested are fully booked. The hotel has no rooms left, but it didn’t state that on its website. W: Is there anything you can do? M: I’m sorry, but it’s out of our power. Your airline still has seats available though, so we can book you into a different hotel on the same dates if you’d like. W: Yes, please. Text 7 M: So, tell me about tonight’s event. W: It’s our special festival called the Night of the Radishes (萝卜). People cut the radishes into different shapes to create artworks with creativity. M: Cool! How did it begin? W: It dates back to the 19th century when local farmers shaped the radishes to attract customers in the marketplace. Actually, radishes were introduced to Mexico by the Spanish in the 16th century. M: Interesting! Some of my Chinese friends might like it! W: Invite them next time! Time to go out and catch the bus. You don’t want to miss it! Text 8 W: You’re going too fast. I can’t keep up. I’m so out of breath. After the competition, I’m going to go back to cycling instead of running. M: Cycling is great exercise, but running is good as well. It can take your pressure off and improve your mental health. W: Do you run a lot? M: I try to, but not as often as I’d like. I go on long hikes whenever I get free time, because it has helped my fitness. You have a week to improve before the competition. Make the most of these days. W: No problem. But I can’t lift my feet now... I need to rest a little while before I feel refreshed. M: Come on! We’ll stop when we get past the finish line. Then we can relax for a bit. Text 9 M: Hi, Bethany! How have you been? W: Mr. Thomas! I’m surprised you even remember who I am. M: I would never forget my best student. How about your friends Charlotte and Zara? W: They’re fine. Sadly, it’s hard to stay in contact now as we all live so far apart and are busy with our families. M: Are you still interested in poetry and novels? W: Yes. English literature is my favorite subject. I even got a degree in it. I’m in charge of editing some sections of a newspaper now. I’m hoping to publish a book someday, but I’m not sure if my dream of being an author will come true. M: I have every confidence in you. You’re always talented. You live in the London area, right? W: No, I actually live in America now. I got a job there a couple of years ago. M: I see. What brings you back here then? W: My brother is getting married next week. It’s by complete chance that I’m here for this school fair. Text 10 I’ve always loved elephants, and I would happily say there was nothing I didn’t know about them. So, just imagine my surprise when I discovered that the world has been holding celebrations for elephants every year since 2012! It’s called World Elephant Day on the 12th of August, and it aims to bring people’s attention to the serious problems faced by elephants around the world. As we can tell, thousands of elephants are killed each year for their meat and skin as well as their valuable ivory (象牙), which worries me the most. Meanwhile, some are losing their forest homes to the farming industry. The day was set up by Canadian filmmaker Patricia Sims, alongside Thailand’s Elephant Reintroduction Foundation. A film named Return to the Forest was first shown on the first World Elephant Day. It’s about returning performing elephants back to the wild. Now celebrated by many international wildlife organizations, this special day tries to share knowledge and positive solutions to better protect these big and beautiful animals. 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
