One day in the winter of 7th grade, I was taking a French class, listening to my teacher tell her story about how she learned French, and it hit me... If my teacher could learn French on her own, why couldn’t I learn a foreign language on my own?
That evening, I made a decision: I would learn Italian.
At first, I chose to learn Italian because I thought it would be “cool”. I wanted to surprise people around me. Perfect speaking was my dream. I thought it was just a matter of studying long and hard enough. However, as time went by, my dream of Italian fluency (流利) came to nothing. After fruitless studies, I perceived that something had to be changed.
My books were fine; they included everything I needed to learn Italian. My conditions were great; a quiet room with nothing but books and myself. I realized that the problem was all my own! I needed a true, strong reason to learn the language.
The real reasons for me to learn Italian should be these: the future memories in Italy, the wonderful people there, and the operas I loved but couldn’t understand.
Finally, I needed to learn for my interest — history: to discover more about the history of Italy, and learn about things that my English-speaking tour guide would never tell me.
Once I changed my mind and started learning the language for myself, not to surprise those around me, my Italian studies began to look up.

Nature’s Warnings
When the sky suddenly turns dark and the wind becomes strong, watch out! A dangerous storm might be coming. Watch for flashes of lightning. Listen for thunder. If nature sends these warnings, don’t wait for rain. Act right away to keep safe.
Safety Steps
At the first flash of lightning, quickly go inside a building or a car. Do not go into a shed (棚) for protection. It is not closed like a building, so it is not safe.
Even after you are indoors, be careful! It is not wise to go near doors or windows. A room with no windows is the safest place to be.
Do not wash your hands during a storm. Do not use anything that runs on electricity either. Water and electrical lines are like roads for lightning. Even if you really want to play computer games, don’t! It is better to be bored than to risk getting hurt. Try reading a book instead.
If you can’t get to somewhere safe, stay out in the open. You may feel safe under a tree, but that is not a good place. Lightning often strikes tall poles (杆) and trees. Stay. down in an open space and cover your ears to protect them. Loud thunder can hurt your hearing.
Lightning Strikes
Lightning does not strike people very often. It is unlikely that you will see that happen. If you do, call 120. Only trained emergency workers should care for a person who has been hit by lightning.
If you follow these rules, you can keep safe during a storm.
