67-year-old Chinese agronomist (农学家) Hu Yuefang comes from Hunan province. He has worked in Madagascar (马达加斯加岛) for 18 years. He first arrived there in 2007. At that time, China started a project on the island to show its hybrid rice. The rice in Madagascar didn’t grow well because of poor soil and the climate (气候). Hu decided to stay and help. After many years of work, Hu and his team made five new kinds of rice seeds. They can grow well even in dry weather and heavy rains.
The harder task was making the local farmers believe and accept these “foreign” seeds. Hu decided to demonstrate the advantages. He used the same way to plant local rice and hybrid rice and then compared the two. The results showed that the hybrid rice seeds could produce two to three times more rice! The local farmers were so excited!
“Good seeds aren’t enough. Farmers must know how to grow them,” Hu said. He taught them carefully. When farmers nearby had problems, he rode over on his motorbike. If they were far away, he helped them by phone.
Hu has missed many important family moments. He sees his family only once a year. He wasn’t there when his mother passed away, and he wasn’t there when his grandson was born. But he stays strong and keeps working. He hopes to return home in two or three years, but only after he teaches others to continue his work.
32. Why did Hu decide to stay in Madagascar?
A. To study the local climate. B. To help improve rice production.
C. To learn about the local culture. D. To show China’s hybrid rice.
33. The underlined word “demonstrate” in Paragraph 2 probably means “________”
A. show B. receive C. add D. remain
34. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Hu Yuefang returns to China twice a year to spend time with his family.
B. Hu Yuefang first went to Madagascar in 2008 to start the hybrid rice project.
C. The new rice seeds developed by Hu’s team can only grow well in dry weather.
D. Hu Yuefang compared hybrid rice with local rice to demonstrate the new seeds’ advantages.
35. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. How hybrid rice was invented in China.
B. Chinese hybrid rice is famous all over the world.
C. Why Madagascar needs to buy rice seeds from China.
D. A Chinese agronomist helps Madagascar grow better rice.

Book Report
by Alice Brown
Name of the book: The Twins’ Forest Adventure
Writer: Polly Hunts
Main characters: Andy, Daniel, the squirrel
Summary (概要):
Andy and Daniel are brothers. One day, they go into the forest and spend the whole afternoon there. The sky turns dark and they cannot find their way back. Suddenly, they fall into a big hole.
In the hole, they become very small. They meet a squirrel and become friends with it. Then they go on a journey with the squirrel. During the journey, they meet different ________, such as a fluffy (毛茸茸的) rabbit, a colorful bird and a gentle deer. They have lots of fun. They stay overnight at the squirrel’s home.
The next day, they are still in the hole, but they are back to their original size. They finally climb out of the hole after two hours. They think that it must be a dream, but they see the squirrel nearby. It is waving to them.
Opinion:
This story isn’t exciting. Even though the adventure lacks thrills, the cute animals and the magical size change make it a sweet read. I would recommend it to friends who like gentle and whimsical stories. And I think Polly’s other books like The Twins in the Mysterious Cave and The Twins’ Deep-Sea Discovery are much more exciting. I hope her new book The Twins’ African Trip will be better. I bought it from the bookshop yesterday.

例文
Last week, our school held Earthquake Safety Month activities. My class had a drill to teach us how to stay safe during an earthquake. During the activity, we learned the right ways to protect ourselves. First, we should stay under the desk quickly. Second, it is important to cover our heads with hands or books. Third, we must remember not to run out during the shaking.
I think this drill is very useful. It not only teaches us how to protect ourselves, but also makes us more confident when facing dangers. I hope we can have more activities like this in the future.
