The Summer Solstice (Xiazhi) is one of the 24 traditional Chinese solar terms. It usually arrives around June 21st or 22nd. On this special day, the Northern Hemisphere has the longest daylight and the shortest night of the whole year. After this day, the days start getting shorter, and the nights get longer.
During the Summer Solstice, the weather becomes very hot. It marks the beginning of the hottest period of the year, often called the “Sanfu” days. Although the sunlight is the strongest, it does not necessarily mean it is the hottest day. The earth needs time to absorb the heat. There is also plenty of rainfall, which is good for crops like corn and cotton.
Farmers are busy during this time. They need to water the fields often because it is so dry and hot. In the south of China, people are busy harvesting wheat. They must work quickly before the rainy season ruins the crops.
There are interesting customs for the Summer Solstice. In northern China, people eat cold noodles. The saying goes, “Winter solstice dumplings, summer solstice noodles.” Eating noodles is believed to bring good luck. Another fun custom is to measure (测量) shadows. On the solstice, shadows at noon are the shortest of the year. Ancient people would measure the shadow to calculate the length of the year.
The Summer Solstice is not just about heat; it is a time of energy and growth. It reminds us to enjoy the long sunny days and work hard like the farmers.

①In recent years, China has made great progress in environmental protection. As the host of the 2026 Global Eco-Forum, China shared its success stories with the world. Its experience offers valuable lessons for other developing countries.
②One of the most famous projects is the Three-North Shelterbelt Forest Program, also known as the “Green Great Wall.” Starting in the late 1970s, China has planted billions of trees in the north and northwest. These green belts help hold the soil and reduce wind speed in dry areas. They stop desert sands from moving southward and protect farmland from terrible sandstorms.
③Another big achievement is the protection of the giant panda. Thanks to strict nature reserve laws, the population of wild pandas has increased. In 2021, it was officially removed from the endangered species (物种) list. In 2026, the IUCN praised China’s work in saving this lovely animal from the edge of extinction.
④China is also leading in the use of renewable energy. Now, it has the world’s largest power for making wind and solar energy. Solar panels can even be seen on the roofs of rural houses. Many cities are replacing gasoline buses with electric ones to cut down air pollution.
⑤The government has also introduced strict laws to fight water pollution. The “River Chief System” makes local officials responsible (负责的) for keeping rivers clean. If a river is dirty, the official in charge will be punished. Clear water has returned to many rivers that were once heavily polluted.
⑥These efforts show that with strong will and good planning, humans can heal the damage done to nature.

One Saturday, the town had a big picnic by the river. After lunch, the children went to McDougal’s Cave. They took candles and walked into the tunnels (隧道) near the entrance (入口) . Tom Sawyer knew the caves well. He went in with Becky Thatcher.

The festival started more than 2,000 years ago. People celebrate it to remember Qu Yuan, a famous and patriotic (爱国的) poet. He lived during the Warring States period. They also hit the water with paddles (桨) to scare fish away.
Today, we still have dragon boat races. Many strong men row long, colorful boats that look like dragons. It is very exciting to watch! Another important tradition is eating zongzi. They can be sweet with red bean paste or salty with meat.
To keep evil (邪恶的) spirits away, people hang special plants like mugwort (艾草) and calamus (菖蒲) on their doors. Children wear colorful silk strings and a sachet (香囊) . These customs bring health and good luck.

例文
As young students in a challenging but hopeful era, we should not only learn knowledge but also develop good manners, kindness and responsibility.
We should wait in line in public, keep the school clean and wait for everyone to start eating together. We need to care for the elderly and disabled, and help those in need. We can donate money, clothes or books to charities, and even volunteer at community centers. To protect the environment, we can save water and energy, sort rubbish and walk or ride bikes often.
I hope more students will join us to make the world a warmer and greener place.
