Most plants get most of their water from the ground, even the tallest trees. That water makes its way up to their leaves. But how does it get all the way up there? It is called “capillary action” (毛细作用)—plants get water like drinking through a straw.
Welcome to the Sunshine Smart Kids Lab. Now, let’s do an easy experiment with celery (芹菜) to see this.
What we need:
Experimental (实验) Steps (Ask an adult to use the knife):

2. Add about 20 drops of food coloring to the water.
3. Cut the end of the celery to make a fresh surface.
4. Put the celery into the glass with the cut part in the water.
5. Stir (搅拌) gently to mix the water and coloring well.
Leave your celery in the glass for a day or two and watch it carefully often. What happens? You should see color coming up into the leaves of your celery. Have an adult cut into the celery so you can see how the colored water has traveled.

Brian Robeson, a thirteen-year-old boy, was flying alone to visit his father in the far north of Canada when the pilot suddenly fell ill and died. The plane crashed (撞击) into a lake deep in the wilderness (荒野). Brian swam to land, hurt and alone, with nothing but a hatchet (手斧)—a small tool his mother gave him before the trip. ①
At first, Brian was so afraid. He had no food, no shelter, and no way to call for help. Bugs (虫子) bit him all night, and his body ached from the crash. He built a simple shelter under a rock and found some wild berries to eat, but they made him sick. ② For the first time in his life, he felt truly alone.
Slowly, Brian learned to take care of himself. He discovered he could make fire by hitting the hatchet against a stone. Fire changed everything—it kept animals away, cooked his food, and gave him light in the dark. ③ Day by day, he grew stronger and braver. The wilderness that once scared him began to feel like home.
④ But nature was not always kind. A tornado destroyed his shelter and put out his fire. Another time, a plane flew overhead, but the pilot did not see him. Brian was so heartbroken that he almost gave up. Then he made a decision—he would never feel sorry for himself again. He rebuilt everything with his hatchet and kept going. He was no longer the same boy who climbed onto that plane.
In the end, Brian managed to find an emergency radio from the crashed plane at the bottom of the lake. A rescue plane arrived soon after. Brian survived alone for fifty-four days. He was thin and hurt, but he learned something that would stay with him forever.
(Adapted from Hatchet by Gary Paulsen)
8. What did Brian’s mom give him for his trip?
A. A hatchet. B. A rock. C. Some food. D. A radio.
9. Where can we put the sentence “He taught himself to catch fish and even built a bow (弓) to hunt small birds.”?
A. ① B. ② C. ③ D. ④
10. Which chart can best describe Brian’s feelings after the accident happened?
A. B. C. D.
11. What lesson can we learn from the story?
A. The hardest moments in life can make us stronger. B. It can be wise to give up when things go wrong.
C. Having a simple tool is enough to survive any difficulty. D. Nature is always kind to those who are really brave.
D
Imagine this: you’re sitting in your room with nothing to do. No homework, no messages, no videos. You feel bored. Many people think boredom (无聊) is a waste of time or even harmful. But scientists have found that boredom can actually be good for you.
When you feel bored, your brain doesn’t stop working. Instead, a system called the “default mode network” (默认模式网络) becomes active. Unlike most brain systems that need a clear task to work, this one works best when there’s no outside task to focus on. Your brain is free to remember things, connect ideas in new ways, and think about what you really want.
Boredom helps you grow. When there’s nothing to do, you have to decide what to do next. This builds skills like planning, organizing, and problem-solving. The discomfort (不舒服) of boredom is useful too. It teaches you to manage your feelings and be patient.
What’s more, it can help you develop creativity. When there’s nothing to do, your mind looks for something more interesting and that search can lead to (带来) new ideas. The British writer Meera Syal is a great example. She grew up in a village with little to do. Boredom made her write—she kept a diary from a young age, filling it with stories and poems. She became a creative adult by using her boring moments.
However, today’s technology makes it hard to get these benefits. Whenever we feel bored, we reach for our phones. Fast videos and games keep the brain too busy. The default mode network hardly gets the chance to work. We don’t experience the kind of boredom that leads to growth—we just want more screen time.
So the next time you feel bored, don’t rush to your phone. Give your mind some quiet space, and see where it takes you. Maybe a book, maybe a project, maybe something you’ve never thought of. Who knows—that feeling might lead to something great.
12. How does the writer lead into the topic?
A. By describing a common boring situation. B. By listing some numbers of a study.
C. By telling a story of a famous writer. D. By comparing boredom with other feelings.
13. According to the passage, boredom can help you __________.
①make some new friends ②learn to decide what to do ③deal with your feelings ④develop your creativity
A. ①②③ B. ②③④ C. ①③④ D. ①②④
14. Why does the writer mention people’s habit of using phones in Paragraph 5?
A. To introduce popular modern technology to us. B. To suggest that being busy is better than doing nothing.
C. To explain why we fail to get the benefits of boredom. D. To prove that boredom is a common problem in our life.
15. What is the best title for this text?
A. How to Deal with Boredom B. The Danger of Using Phones
C. Why Your Brain Needs a Break D. Boredom: It’s Better Than You Think

A. A hatchet. B. A rock. C. Some food. D. A radio.
A 9. C 10. C 11. A
第一段指出:“...with nothing but a hatchet (手斧)—a small tool his mother gave him before the trip.”,这直接说明Brian的妈妈在他旅行前给了他一把斧头。
第四段开头提到“But nature was not always kind”,随后列举了龙卷风摧毁他的住所等困难。待插入的句子“He taught himself to catch fish and even built a bow (弓) to hunt small birds.”属于具体的生存技能学习,与第三段中“Slowly, Brian learned to take care of himself”以及“Day by day, he grew stronger and braver”的内容逻辑连贯,是对他生存技能提升的进一步补充。
文章最后一段提到:“He was thin and hurt, but he learned something that would stay with him forever.”。
A 13. B 14. C 15. D
第一段开篇写道“Imagine this: you’re sitting in your room with nothing to do. No homework, no messages, no videos. You feel bored.”,作者通过描绘一个普遍的无聊场景来引出话题。
【13题详解】
第三段写明“When there’s nothing to do, you have to decide what to do next.”和“It teaches you to manage your feelings and be patient.”,第四段写明“it can help you develop creativity.”,这三点对应②③④,文中没有提到结交新朋友。
第五段首句表明主旨“However, today’s technology makes it hard to get these benefits.”,后文举人们一无聊就玩手机的例子,用来解释我们无法收获无聊带来的好处的原因。
Boredom: It’s Better Than You Think。
Ouch! You Just Twisted (扭伤) Your Ankle (脚踝)—Now What?
You’re playing basketball, and suddenly, your ankle twists, and it starts to swell (肿胀). What should you do? Don’t worry. ____16____ Each letter stands for a simple step that can help you get well faster.
R = Rest. Stop what you’re doing right away. ____17____ Continuing to walk or run on it can make things much worse. After the first 1-2 days, try gentle movements as long as they don’t cause pain.
I = Ice. Put ice on the injured area as soon as you can. ____18____ Remember, never put ice directly on your skin — always wrap (包) it in a towel first. Each icing should last 15-20 minutes, and you can repeat it every 2-3 hours during the first 48 hours.
C = Compression (加压). Wrap the ankle with an elastic bandage This gives support and helps reduce swelling. ____19____ If your toes turn blue, the bandage is too tight — loosen (松开) it right away!
E = Elevation (抬高). Keep your ankle raised above the level of your heart when you sit or lie down. You can use a pillow to support it. This helps reduce swelling faster.
When to see a doctor: If the pain is serious, you can’t walk at all, or it doesn’t get better after a few days, go to the hospital.
A. It helps reduce pain and swelling by lowering the temperature of the injured area.
B. The best way to treat it is to follow the RICE method.
C. Remember, it is important to take the bandage off when you go to bed at night.
D. Give your ankle a break and don’t put weight on it.
E. However, be careful not to wrap it too tight, or it may cut off blood flow (血流).
16. ________
17. ________
18. ________
19. ________
20. Is it a good idea to put ice directly on the injured area? What will you do if you twist your ankle? (Within 15 words)
____________________________________________________________________________________________
B 17. D 18. A 19. E
20.
No, it isn’t. I will follow the RICE method.
根据第一段“Each letter stands for a simple step that can help you get well faster.” B“The best way to treat it is to follow the RICE method.”
根据第二段“Stop what you’re doing right away.”和“Continuing to walk or run on it can make things much worse.” D“Give your ankle a break and don’t put weight on it.”
根据第三段“Put ice on the injured area as soon as you can.” A“It helps reduce pain and swelling by lowering the temperature of the injured area.”
根据第四段“If your toes turn blue, the bandage is too tight—loosen it right away!” E“However, be careful not to wrap it too tight, or it may cut off blood flow.”
I will follow the RICE method.(注意字数限制在15词以内,答案不唯一,合理即可)。

Dear Lucy,
I’m glad to hear from you. I fully understand your feelings. Let me share my advice with you.
First of all, you need to relax yourself. Reading some classics is a good choice, which can help you calm down. Secondly, it is important to deal with your emotions properly. When you feel nervous, you can talk to your parents or friends. They will surely give you a hand. Last but not least, you can try to make a difference. For example, doing some volunteer work in your free time can not only help others but also make you more confident. I believe you will be better in Grade 9.
I hope you find my advice helpful. Looking forward to your reply!
Yours,
Li Hua
