Have you ever read the book Pippi Longstocking? It’s a fun story about a naughty (淘气的) girl named Pippi. Swedish writer Astrid Lindgren wrote it. This year is the book’s 80th birthday! The book was on my reading list when I was in primary school in Poland. It was quite a thick book. But once I started, I couldn’t put it down.
Pippi is an orphan (孤儿). She lives alone in a house called Villa Villekulla. To me, she is a great example of being strong and living life her own way. She doesn’t follow any rules, she doesn’t go to school, and she lives with a horse and a monkey. She cooks, cleans and manages her money. She is so strong that she can even lift her own horse!
One day, Pippi’s friends Tommy and Annika, ask her to try going to school for a day. It doesn’t go well. Pippi doesn’t know how to do simple math problems, and when it is time to draw, she makes a huge picture of her horse on the floor because a piece of paper isn’t big enough.
Even though Pippi is a bit crazy and very different, I still like how Tommy and Annika accept her and want to join her on her adventures (冒险). They show that true friendship grows on respect and shared joy. The book is also a call to accept your differences. The Paralympic Games are an international sports event for athletes with disabilities. Like the Olympic Games, they are held every four years and include many sports, such as swimming, running, and cycling. During the games, many athletes compete with a guide.
Santos lost her sight in her teens. Now at the age of 42, she holds the women’s world record in the 100-meter dash for blind or nearly blind athletes. When she races with her guide, Garcia, he runs to her left. He holds a short tether (拴绳) in his right hand, while Santos holds the other end in her left.
Since 2012, most Paralympic guides have received medals (奖牌) with their athletes. However, their teamwork often goes beyond the finish line. While training daily with Santos, Garcia is also preparing for the Olympics. “I prefer being a guide,” said Garcia. “I feel more pressure (压力) at the Paralympics. I have to give 200 percent of myself to avoid mistakes and help my teammate succeed.”
A similar story comes from American para-cyclist Hannah and her guide, Skyler. Every time Hannah climbs on a bike behind Skyler, Skyler reaches back to hold her hand. “It reminds us we’re in this together,” said Skyler.
Hannah and Skyler follow the same training plan. When training gets too hard, Hannah remembers she is working not just for herself, but for Skyler too. Skyler believes that if she hadn’t begun guiding, she would never have shone so much in sports. “I’m lucky that Hannah chose me to do this, just as I chose her,” she said.

Did you know that birds can also get “road rage”? A new study found that Galápagos yellow warblers (黄莺) living near busy roads get very angry when they hear cars.
The Galápagos Islands are a group of islands in the Pacific Ocean. They are one of the best wildlife-watching places in the world. In the 1960s, they had a population of just 2,000. Today, about 32,000 people live there. In addition, more than 200,000 tourists visit the islands every year. This means more cars on the roads.
How does all that noise from traffic affect (影响) the islands’ animals? A research team from the UK wanted to find out. They carried out their study by watching 38 yellow warblers. About half of them lived near roads. The other half lived away from traffic. The researchers used speakers to play two recordings. One played only the song of a yellow warbler. The other played the same song mixed with traffic sounds. Then, the researchers recorded how the birds behaved when they heard the recordings.
The birds living closer to roads were aggressive when they heard the song with traffic sounds. They got nearer to the speaker and flew by it again and again. That move could mean the birds were preparing for a fight, said the researchers.
The team calls for more attention to the problems. Although environments free of human noise are hard to find, we can do something to protect wild animals from it, said the researchers…
